They are weather proof. The batteries are in a water tight case. Also search for "outdoor" lights.

I actually know the guy, and I promise he isn't trying to be condescending at all. He just tries to get the instructions over as clear as possible so that anyone that wants to try the project will have an easy time if they want to replicate the yard decor.
