Thanks for suggesting this one! Today, for #LearningFromLyrics, I looked at Fingertips by Lana Del Rey. And, now I’m concerned for her…
I love trying to glean poetry tips from songs, and this one was a great example of writing stream of consciousness free how that can work in a song.

The telomeres metaphor line. Only a brilliant mind like hers could come up with such a creative line

I love the change up from “two seconds to cry” to “two seconds to be me” I think it’s something that spoke to me a lot about sadness being a part of human experience and identity and not necessarily something to constantly attempt to hide or run from. Idk Lana always writes in a beautiful way which allows the listeners mind to take what they need in the moment I think ☺️

A&W would be great to cover next. It’s from the same project and was even nominated for best song at the Grammys.

What I got from the "They say there's irony in the music, it's a tragedy, I see nothing Greek in it" line: Lana, especially in her early discography, used to talk explicitly about heavy topics such as abusive relationships and domestic violence. I recommend you take a look at her song Ultraviolence to get a better idea. The media criticised her excessively on this, saying she was glorifying and romanticising abuse. On the other hand, some of her fans would defend her by saying her songs are stories, do not depict real life and they're just an artistic way to discuss serious topics. I think that line is basically Lana saying, "There's no 'irony' in my music, it's real, it's what I personally went through" and it is very powerful. I think women should be allowed to artistically express themselves the way they want to. It's what she was feeling at the time, most times women are not aware how bad they are treated in a relationship until they get out of it. If the music was her way of expressing and processing that trauma I think she's more than justified.

Love this - thanks for adding it. Yeah it definitely seemed like a "this is real, it's not some performance" type of sentiment, and I think it's super cool the way she worded it. I also think she's very brave for putting her story out there so honestly and vulnerably

I always thought that the neighbor was actually trying to save her from her suicide attempt

Ooh, I like this interpretation!

I interpreted the drive by her neighbors while she was naked in the ocean as the neighbors saving her from killing herself after assaulting her, which is horrible. Why would she be naked when trying to kill herself? why did she mentioned they pulled her by the waist while naked ? Why use the word drive by to describe what the neighbors did to her ? I dont think her neighbors were good people unfortunately... Lana is known to not put filler inconsequential words, all the words were intentional Just my interpretation

@@bellami9605it’s actually quite common for people who commit suicide to do so in the nude. In some way they feel it’s less of a burden that someone won’t have to undress them.

Yes, I don't hear any suggestion of SA in these lines at all. I hear Lana at the beach, intending to drown herself but thankfully her neighbours were driving by and saw her and pulled her out of the ocean. I relate to this line not because of a suicide attempt but because I got caught in a rip tide as a teen swimming alone and lost my bikini because the waves had pulled it off as I was tumbled around under the water. Either that or she removed her clothes before going in the water, not uncommon.

I love your interpretations, Love your Lana videos. This and Kintsugi were perhaps the saddest songs in this album. Wildfire Wildflower is another one that dives in her family dynamics, particularly her mother. I would love to hear your interpretation of "Get Free" and "Blue Banisters". Also the song "hope is a dangerous thing for me to have, but I have it" is one that I understand to some degree but theres certain parts im not quite sure I grasp.

Hi Megan, great reaction! Fun fact: this was just some voice notes she recorded for herself, and when the album and the idea of the song came out, her producer helped her to put it all together and create this beautiful song, and they barely changed any lyrics. So, the writing itself it's not awesome just for how it's written, but also because it just came in her head from different thoughts, like a freestyled diary. She's a genius. ❤️

Lana fan here, you are mostly on point! The 'cocktail of things' is the antidepressant lithium, she revealed that herself. There's a minor lyric mistake: "it's said that my mind is not fit or so they said to carry a child" is the correct line. This ties back to her being on antidepressants and probably the doctors saying she is not in a fit state to carry a child. I am curious why you picked Kintsugi and this to analyze by Lana, they are very dense, extremely personal and vulnerable. She has more easier to listen, lighthearted options. Nevertheless great video!

Ohhh cool! Thanks for adding this. That makes sense. I figured it was some kind of antidepressant. I picked Kintsugi and this one b/c they were two of the most requested! (I may have also said I like sad but beautiful songs....oops haha XD). Glad to hear she has more lighthearted ones, though ;) and thanks again for sharing your insights!

Love the video! What she meant by the neighboors doing a drive-by I think it's because she tried to drown and they pulled her up by her waist, since after that she says I wanted to go out like you, swim with the fishes

i think the telomere line refers to longevity escape velocity which is the point at which for every year that a person ages, medical advancements would be able to extend their life expectancy by more than one year. SO that is the ten-year mark.

i think the lines about her family are saying if i survive the 10 year mark will you also be there, will you be there too, will it be worth it? this relates to the following lines about her wishing her brother to quit smoking, the worry for the babies health and her mental health struggles with her previous suicide attempt. also i think the ten year part is a play on words for tenure which is a position usually held for 5 to 10 years. perhaps it relates to her career as well? if i stay Lana Del Rey will you guys still be around to celebrate me or should i focus on family cause you never know when you could lose them

the way you emphasizes on "transition lines" so much made more clear to me that the neighbor thing was actually he saving her from suicide, this comes right after she talks about her uncle who hung himself real high so it was in a way a transition line to the moment where she felt like him, as a kid. p.s. i loved this concept "transition lines"

I think you are charming and cute , it's a sad song though we might get also some back from it , about our lives and how we live them , I wished I remember more of my english classes , to be as poetic I could in my main langage french , if you think to be a bit weird sometimes you should not worry about it , I found that to be in some ways not as everybody else to be a good thing and not a bad one and one last thing Megan is great name , I find that pretty :)

I will try some lines , wished I had more knowledge to sound better , here I go : If I was a fish I would bathe in your eyes , if I was a ray of sun enlighten your hair ,if I could pick a morning rose it would be pale compared to your beauty , if I was a dolphin would dive in the deep ocean to bring the most rare shell , if I was the world would offer you all the stars so they could reflect the magnificence of your heart through your eyes . I'm sure it's full of errors :p but after all just made that out in 5 minutes for you , a bit of poésie like we say in french :) @@OnWriting.
