I always thought the “old habits die screaming” line was in reference to her checking his location- because it wouldn’t just pop up on her screen - and she got burned by checking after they were newly over. I love loml and the religious imagery she repurposes in Guilty as Sin? - so good. The Prophecy is so sad, wanting to trade money and fame for someone who loves her 😢

What about for people who start with a setting? I have a tendency of making an environment but struggle to come up with a story.
@OnWriting.
@OnWriting. Күн бұрын
Hmm, good question. Maybe it would help to think about what kinds of people (or beings) live in that environment? What goes on there? Maybe do some freewriting as if YOU were living there - what is there to do? What people do you meet? From there, you can start finding a character or two to then build a premise around :)

The film opening is quite short! Barely even one minute. That is my one major fault with this analysis, the weird criticism of "IAWF"'s "long opening." Otherwise, this is mostly quite insightful. I simply cannot fathom why anyone would NOT cry in watching this classic film from 1946--I always do after scores of viewings. The reviewer should be wearing a wristwatch to convey her seriousness though! Please she is no longer wearing nail polish, which is nasty stuff.

It's one of my favourite poem/narratives as well. I don't know many poems that have such structure, but I know the long poem Hunting of the Snark by Lewis Carroll is similar in rhythm and rhyme as well as lots of fun since it's by the author of the Alice books.

Please react to The Prophecy, The Albatross and if you could listen to "Speak Now" I would be grateful, there are many songs that I like from that album and it is the first that Taylor wrote completely alone as a response to people who said that she didn't really write her songs, when she was between 19 and 20 years. Thanks for your analysis! 💝

Outliners (plotters) for the win! I might even outline a little too excessively but enjoy the brainstorming process. One thing I add to my outline is: conflict and resolved conflict. It helps me keep track of loose ends throughout the story which was super helpful! 😊

THANKS FOR THIS. I'm writing a biblical historical novel. Im working on my premise and I think it's expressed by a minor but influential character, who says, "I could not have imagined how sweet the bitterness of the Lord could taste." The story is about two main characters who lose everything and go through hell, but together they discover they've served a higher purpose and through that find ultimate peace and contentment.

I use the terms premise and theme pretty much interchangeably. And I guess what you refer to as theme might what I would call the leitmotif or simply motif.
@OnWriting.
@OnWriting. 12 күн бұрын
Yeah, probably closer to leitmotif, tbh. Motif always seemed closer to "symbol" to me. So many of these terms are used interchangeably, for sure

Something i think is really cool is how the first chorus reveals the meaning of the verse before it. Originally, the first verse seems to be about what olivia and her partner are doing. There arent any pronouns other than "you", so its not clear who olivia is referring to. When the first chorus hits, it rejects that original assumption and shows that the verse is actually about what her ex and his new girlfriend do. Its like olivia is looking at her ex and his new relationship knowing that it's all reused. Amazing.

I think the point about not cementing yourself to a scene you had in mind if it doesn't work for your story in the end is particularly good to keep in mind. Same thing with dialog lines or world building details. I wrote half the opening scene of my book before I really started outlining, and although I generally liked what that original draft did, I wasn't getting a "this is the way" vibe from it. Now that I have an outline on the cusp of completion, when I start drafting for real that opening scene will look different, and it'll work much better because I'll know exactly what it needs to do. Can't recommend your outlining course enough.

There was no lawsuit - Olivia gave the credits to Taylor to prevent that because people were getting super annoying about it saying she had copied that part of the song. Jack Antonoff even said he didn't know about it at all and was surprised when they told him. Then people started saying they had sued Olivia, just to hate on Taylor.

Girl, the lawsuit is real that's why Olivia and Taylor are not talking and never interact with each other again. Olivia stops talking how she was a fan of Ms Tay when she's a little girl and mentioning other singers that inspired her now as an artist.

I’m laughing a bit because I interpret this song as the or one of the most romantic song(s) she’s ever written and me and my fiancé are literally planning for our first dance. I’ve always read it as she’s there for the big celebration and for the less-than-fun and hard moments, like traditional wedding vows

Haha I know! The “but” changes the interpretation for me. “I want your midnights BUT I’ll be cleaning up bottles…” I’m apparently one of few who read it this way though 😅 but it’s such a lovely song and so sweet that you’re using it as your first dance 🥺🥺🥺

I don’t think any of the songs other than so long London and how did it end are actually about Joe. Her poem before the album makes this more clear by saying it’s about the “manic episode” following the long relationship, aka her first fling afterwards(Matty Healy)

Just a quick note from a Canadian living in London - ‘fairy lights’ are what Brits call lights on a string (eg Christmas tree lights, but often the kind you might have up all through the year, around windows or in the garden).

This album reminds me of Tusk by Fleetwood Mac. Once everyone realized the band was not going to do Rumors again the album started to come alive. I see the same with this album. Not only did everyone have a sound in mind but many believed they knew the subject matter beforehand. Combine that with length people were overwhelmed. This album has layer upon layer. The more you listen the deeper the hole. They have a superficial layer but go much deeper with more listening and a little digging. I found myself reading Greek mythology for the first time in years just to get a deeper understanding of Cassandra. Same with Peter. I never connected Peter Pan because I’ve never been a big fan but my wife immediately heard the references. She knows nothing about her past relationships. This is her best album. It will grow over time in my opinion

Sisyphus: Matty Healy mentions him in an interview with Zane Lowe kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmS9eXqcmKqBq80 1hr 4mins in. He quotes Dylan saying "you can't be wise and be in love. Trying to be both is Sisyphus" So she borrowed from MH to sing about JA!

The Alchemy: “I circled you on a map” is also a really clever reference to the meeting via a celeb dating app. Also “these blokes warmed the benches” is a great way of referring to all her British exes who proved to not be “winners.”

Interesting why choosing “Alchemy” instead of “Chemistry”, since the main goal of alchemists back in those years was trying to turn everything into gold, which I think could be related to: “Who are we to fight the alchemy?” Like, who are we to stop this thing between us turn into something gold, something “trophy”, “first prize”, etc (my humble opinion)

Guilty as sin is wonderful and she admits to emotional cheating. BTW. "As the men masqueraded", is this a reference to Penelope and Odysseus? Penelope waited more than 10 years at home having to feed the suitors who tried to convince her Odysseus was dead and they would take over his kingdom by marrying her. She fended them off saying she would make her choice once her tapestry was finished but she unwove her work every night to avoid having to accept her fate thereby remaining loyal to someone who would return 10 years later. TS has often used the image of a tapestry. Cassandra was taken by Agmanenon as war booty. The track Cassandra is just before Peter. Also in reference to cedar closets, cedar oil is used to protect clothing from moths that would otherwise destroy them and she uses the word "preserved" - something she wanted to keep.
