Winsome tartness: "The ability to communicate effectively that we care about what God thinks, not what man thinks."

Thank you so very much for this most excellent Bible lesson. Now, if you will excuse me I need to listen to this several more times...just to initiate the process of unlearning all the bad theology I have internalized over a lifetime.

I love this sermon and I have really enjoyed taking in many more of the Douglas Wilson sermons here on KZbin. We don't agree on everything, but I can say that Doug definitely delivers the Word of God. I am grateful for his ministry. I can empathize with his post-millennial ideas and beliefs, but I'm a-millennial. But I still have lived & acted the way a post-millennial would espouse. That is how we Christians all should act and live. Doug is an excellent preacher. God Bless you Doug and the whole family & ministry!

Pause at 11:42 to see the graphic referenced at 6:33. The graphic made me laugh out loud and think of my son; he's such an imp. Now more than ever I don't want him to ever loose that, I just pray "Yahweh, help me help him channel it to good use."

So so good. Plus references from two of my favorite CSL books! Thank you!!! I have tried so hard to convince loved ones that real love is more stern and splendid than mere kindness(CSL again). But their argument is that what Doug calls winsome tartness (love that phrase) alienates even those on our side. I say then they are not really on our side. I am to the point where I don’t care about the words or the tone used or ascribed or perceived. As long as truth is being said. Shouldn’t we all be at that point? There’s a war on!

Right off the bat, “I don’t think so Skippy.” communicates much more than “I oppose you, and I do not care”. It communicates that you are not a person who is going to be swayed by emotional appeal, AND you are an intelligent person with a capacity for humor. Unbelievers have a prejudice towards Christians, in that they believe Christians to be humorless ice maidens. “I don’t think so Skippy.” says “On guard! There’s an active mind behind this religious line in the sand.” which in a very interesting way is actually a bridge towards communication.

You can also read "Rules for Reformers" from him (Douglas Wilson) as well, and I also recommend you "Blood-Bought World " by Toby J. Sumpter as well who is also one of the associate pastors at Christ Church which is pastored by Mr. Wilson himself. They are both great and needed books in our age. You could also try "Same-sex Mirage" by Wilson as well. You can get it from both Amazon or from @canonpress

Hey brother, I recently started becoming more of a fan of brother Doug - I think he's a tremendous gift to the church. And I think one of the things he does extremely well is exemplify how to be shrewd with the dealings of this culture, and not be outwitted by the sons of darkness. I think something to keep in mind is that one of the fruits of the Spirit is gentleness. And I want to make sure that's recognized, lest one throws the baby of necessary fruits of the Spirit out with the bathwater of unbiblical pushover-ness. I'm thankful for your zeal! My exhortation would be to temper it with the biblical balance. "I'm sick of being nice" concerned me as more of an emotional rise from an inspiring talk rather than a sober-minded contemplation on how to move forward biblically. Is sarcasm necessary? Perhaps! And is gentleness necessary? Most definitely so, since it's a vindication of the Spirit living in you. Is speaking the truth necessary? Most definitely so, as well.

I think most our biblical behaviour should be be formed around what we are commanded to be in scriptures. While there may be some occasion for spirit led sanctified satire or bluntness, and the truth will be offensive at times, we are not biblically commanded to be rude, or to insult people. The bible does however command us to be kind, gentle, humble, meek, patient, merciful. Jesus, the son of God, went thirty years humbly submitted to the pharisaical authority structure, so I think he earned the right to call them out forcefully at the proper time. I would never give any average immature joe christian the confidence to go around being a jerk to people he thinks are evil. Once you've gained maturity in true humility, meekness and love then I think youve earned the wisdom to use some ponient tartness. Obviously every Christian should resist evil tho no matter what their age in Christ.

God gave men greater strength to have greater authority and greater reason to have greater responsibility. We can’t actually abdicate these things to women even tho we pretend to.

I'm a woman having had to be strong in the Truth against a weakened church... it has been spiritually and emotionally confusing. Whereas men should have been stepping into their rightful place and claims as men of God, they have shrugged off integrity as too high a calling for the feigning fawns and fledgling Brothers. For this reason, I thank God others in the church "get it..." that love and Truth coexist not necessarily with a softer tone of voice but with a precise incision to the heart of the problem.
