This is a very difficult aria, and no one sings it perfectly from beginning to end. Having said that, this is quite a very, very good performance/rendition/interpretation of this Verdi favorite. Wonderful in many ways.

Definitely the right temperament vocally, phrasing is impeccable, with wonderful instances of fear and loss expressed beautifully. I saw her in the role at The Met 9 years earlier, the voice was even bigger and more in tune than this. She was one of the top five mezzos and had mixed successes in the soprano repertoire. But she’s definitely in the Pantheon, sitting next to Shirley, Tatiana, et alia!

She was sensational, but to my ear the top notes were never completely free and I prefer her performances as a mezzo. I can understand the desire to tackle the dramatic soprano roles though.
