psympson : No. Russel Harty the host was the one who was... "rude and absolutely IMPOLITE. There's no excuses for that". He was a partonising arsehole, right from the very first tedious question - and his treatment of her didn't improve over the interview. He got exactly what he deserved. I hope he learned something from this experienece - but I doubt it.

Grace was toying with him. Like a LIONESS playing with a mouse. She’s a genius. She carried herself with shall I say Grace and style. I honestly don’t think he knew what he was letting himself in for interviewing Grace. He was so condescending and rude. She’s an ICON and an ARTIST darling! So glad she got her own back and slayed with a stellar performance.

'She' has a name... it is SO rude (in the English language) to refer to someone present as "she" and "her" which both men did repeatedly. They should have been referring to Grace by name. Add "Was it a late night last night?" "Can you hear what I'm saying?" "Do you understand what I am saying to you?" "I do not know where your head is" "I wasn't listening to her I was listening to you" "Let's keep it on a slightly higher level". Russell bailed on Grace in 3 minutes and then brought out his 2nd guest and proceeded to ignore Grace completely for 12 minutes until he brought a third guest from the audience and didn't even bother to introduce them to one and other and gave Walter a further 6 minutes before bringing out a 4th guest! Grace was treated so rudely. Russell was a complete arse.

She's right... it's a rude set up... if you notice guest seating now... they all sit along a couch so the host is facing all of them. It is rude to turn your back on a guest like that. It's also rude to point out that someone is not communicating properly. You learn to play along as a host instead of insulting your guests. It's rude to leave someone waiting to be spoken to again with your back to them. But it's 1980, so I guess they haven't worked things out yet.

It is considered very rude when an interviewer turns his or her back on the other guest when they are acknowledging or listening to the presented guest. The guy was literally sitting sideways on his chair not only just turning his back on her. It is very rude and she had come from a shoot all the way from Asia which was hours and hours away just to do this interview and the guy was not taking her seriously. So, she felt like she was wasting her time. She was teaching him how to do his job. She handled it very well until he kept referring her manners and sitting position which she was fine until his constant wisecracks and digs towards her. Grace was not tolerating it, so she hit him. She may have also been on her period.

He just really seems like the influence for Alan partridge lol.

If you look at a lot of the British interviewers of that time and the 70’s they had a lot of men like him, you see it with the way they talked to the young working class musicians and anyone that was not middle class or robotic. Glad these types of set ups and interviewers are dying off. Especially those shows that love it when they have celebs with “character” when they are jet lagged, drunk or on drugs and hope that they do something that gets people talking.

Grace Jones is an absolute legend .Genius musician and iconic unique star . I am going to google and see if she ever did do the photo with Lord Lichfield Harty was shockingly patronising and rude to her all the way through . So glad she hit him , though it was nowhere near hard enough . Classic TV moment in history though and no interviewer I am sure ever turned their back on her again !

Grace was dating Dolph Lundrgen when she made A VIEW TO A KILL. Her room was adjacent to Roger Moore's at the hotel the cast were staying in, and Roger was really pissed off cos Grace and Dolph kept him awake by rutting all night !

latonya bailey going by the way some of these middle class men talked to white working class people or anyone they deemed “below” them back in the day, I don’t know if it was pure racism or some other form of bigotry.....may need to see his other interviews with non white middle class men to see how he was. Maybe he just did not like those types of flamboyant personalities that his producers hired, especially when they may seem under the influence (although she said she was jet lagged and tired)......who knows these days, racism ran deep in many factors as we now can see......

That guy from London, I think sometimes when us Americans see British racism it's just weird. Brits come off very non offensive. But you know, we Just have to do better as a people. Call injustices out when you see them.

Mariana Baba I don’t think this has anything to do with racism! I think this guy is a terrible interview and the siting arrangement is dreadful, surely a guest should face all his guests at the same time! There’s also another interview with him and David Bowie where he is truly so unprofessional and as condescending to Bowie as he were toward Miss Jones.

Saw a smaller clip of the portion where she was slapping him and thought he was rude in that, but the whole thing gives even more context, that he was an ass to her from the beginning. A humorless, thoroughly unimaginative square. No wonder he made his snide insinuations that she was on something; he couldn't comprehend living art like Grace.

@@actualbennett2245 He said she was smelly and treated her like trash. Someone with that much contempt for someone shouldn't invite her on to begin with. It's understood that when someone invites you to be a guest, you treat them with a measure of dignity instead of trying to read them.

Grace Jones has always been ahead of a time a feminist an artist actress songwriter singer amazing. She deserves respect and this man is supposed to be English and on live TV he is disrespecting her she warned him not once but I believe three way ahead of her time😍😍

Yeah...this interview was a disaster waiting to happen. From the way the chairs/guests were set up, Hardy's pompous demeanour and Grace being Grace (she explained her off mood on this show in her book). I'm not sure if any of the participants are particularly to blame. He clearly sensed something was off and didnt know how to handle her.

A little blast from 37 years in the past- I was the VT engineer doing the recording of the live broadcast- the impression then and now is that it was fairly crude publicity seeking on her part. But on that level it succeeded.
