Reverend Tim you hit the nail right on the head. We are Christian first before we are black, white, working class, upper class, Republican, Democrat. Christians of all races, class, political affiliation must first develop an attitude of "Are you not my brother" like William Wilberforce and those who fought against slave trade did in the UK and beyond. Christians must lead in the fight for justice. It will take a lot of soul searching and true repentance on all our part, but praise God we have the Holy Spirit to help us. Besides, America has already demonstrated what Christians can achieve when they pray. This is the right moment. The question I always ask is who is willing to lead this Christian movement?

Tell the millions of African slaves who were subjugated by white people with biblical, christian justification that they are all equal as Christians. William wilberforce was a force for good in spite of the bible. Not because of it. The bible tells you slaves are absolutely fine. It tells you who you can enslave, for how long, and even how badly you can beat them if they’re disobedient. Wilberforce went totally against what the bible told him. Late to the the party here.... just finished reading Just Mercy and have been watching Stevenson's speeches. So amazed and thrilled to stumble across this with my favorite Tim Keller. This video totally opened my eyes and changed my thinking about reparations and why they are needed. Thanks. God Bless.

In Mr. Stevenson's introductory mention of receiving death threats and opposition I am reminded of the prophet Nehemiah who, out of concern and the depth of sorrow, was committed to building the wall Jerusalem, restoring the city he cared for. Yet, despite opposition, adversity and scorners, he maintained hope saying, "the God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build..." The hand of God was with Nehemiah (Nehemiah 2:8). Not unlike Mr. Stevenson, Nehemiah cared for the welfare of the children Israel (Nehemiah 2:10). And despite the adversary, like unto Nehemiah, the hand of God is with Mr. Stevenson as he cares for those who are marginally oppressed & the poor to whom God has granted him caretaker. His stewardship be blessed as he "opens his mouth, judging righteously, and pleads the cause of the poor and needy (Proverbs 31:9)

Keller's reference to Daniel 9 to say "the Bible believes in corporate sin" is wrong in the sense of it applying to Christians today. Daniel confessed because he was under the Mosaic Covenant that Israel had promised to keep but violated, and so he was part of Israel in a corporate way. But no, the Bible does not tell Christians they are accountable for something they did not do. We are not under the Mosaic Covenant.

7:00 I don't know what kind of Christianity this pastor is preaching, but there is nothing that I've ever seen in that religion that says that you have some guilt or complicity that you just bear due to sharing a skin color with someone else who may have done bad things. I agree that we need memorials to remember where we came from. But we also need to celebrate the wonder of the fact that our country was one of the first to see slavery as wrong. It was a lot of white men who headed the effort and great cost to themselves to end slavery not just in America but around the world. I struggle talking with race about people because we only focus on the negative and don't acknowledge how white people have also helped better the world. Yes we still live in a broken country, but if you want "white" people to listen, we need to have a conversation that acknowledges the full history on both sides. That has not been an offer that has been made.

Mr. Stevenson, How should schools address disciplinary issues for all students? Example Problem: In some school districts in California Black students were disproportionately suspended/expelled compared to white, Asian, Hispanic students. Reaction: Rather than investigate those school districts and investigating each black student's file who was suspended/expelled to determine if they were wrongly punished in comparison to the White, Asian, Hispanic students violating the same rules - California leaders and their policies removed detention and suspension for all students exhibiting inappropriate behaviors in schools. Result: The public school environment, particularly in the classrooms, for both teachers and students, becomes chaotic. There is an increase in bad behavior and teachers are spending time correcting students who know they cannot be punished. Very little instruction is happening. Parents who can do so move their students into charter schools, private schools, online learning, or religious schools.

The continuing problem of misbehavior was a result of a simplistic, quick-fix decision by the California leaders. Removing discipline/consequence procedures was far easier to do since it was a bureaucratic policy decision-signing papers, and changing rules. That's a far easier and faster response than investing money and resources to counter the problems of poverty, home life deterioration, and crime problems inherent in these problematic neighborhoods. It's also an action that these education leaders can point to as "concrete proof" they are seeking solutions. It's also a "solution" they can use to promote their re-election. And, hopefully for them, their re-election will occur before it becomes obvious their "solution" didn't actually solve the problem.

20:15 the issue of mandatory sentences is briefly touched upon. But it is does so oh so superficially. Bryan says that such laws are anti-mercy laws. Really? My knowledge of mandatory sentences is that they are a reaction to trivial or at least inadequate sentencing. For example (and admittedly hypothetical) a rapist that has been charged multiple times before is given a light sentence only to be released to re-offend. This is absolutely critical to get. We can't have mercy at the expense of some other victim. How for example in the above hypothetical, has mercy to the past and future rape victims been addressed. In fact, never-mind mercy in the case of these victims, they weren't even dealt with justly. One thing that I don't see Bryan ever address (and I read his book) is whose prerogative is it to give mercy? Again referring to the hypothetical above, let's say there are three people (or categories of people). There is the offender, the victim and me (the observer). How is it right that I should fight for so-called "mercy" to be shown to the offender and not say that at least a very large part of the mercy is for the victim to extend or withhold? It appears that for me to side with Bryan in an unexamined way is to be mindless. And it is cases such as this where the care of the victim and the realization that the very large part of mercy is in her hands, leads, when things go awry, to the pendulum swings in the other direction, such as in mandatory sentences. In my mind, it is nothing but sophistic jibberish to demand mercy. Mercy can only be granted by the wronged, and that only willingly.

For Christians our identify in Christ, NOT RACE!!!!!! That is not cliché. Keller and Stevenson support the victim narrative. Post modern identity privilege, like the joke on extra votes, is not beneficial. Instead of telling groups of people "you are privileged, and you owe me.", why not just share about the needs and injustices and ask people to get involved? Also, justice goes two ways and people need to be responsible for their power and actions. There is not equality between the races, true, but the gaps are closing because the system is not racist and supports opportunity and even gives preferences in education. I learned a lot from Stevenson's points, and it is edgy, fine. How about this: Where Blacks or whites are incarcerated unjustly, help them. Help children of prisoners. Address the welfare culture and support marriage for AM families. He talks about injustice...and reparations...for how long? How much? It is likely money alone won't change much, and that is already proven by the per capita expense per pupil in cities with less results. The barriers to prosperity and success are not legal ,they are cultural, and that included white and black culture. Successful black families produce successful black children. Breakdown of family, black and white is #1. Quit blaming and start naming for yourself what your culture needs to change and the white culture can work to give help, show compassion and remove barriers, but it can't be a free lunch. That's called welfare. Listening to Keller pander to social justice kind of makes me ill. Just get involved and go help. Whites don't fear blacks in this era, except for on a dark street facing a gang. We can live together and be neighbors. It is happening. About the southern memorials.... There are two cultures there and demonizing southern pride, even though evil came from ancestors, is not the way. The SJ, post modernist want to erase and humiliate the south, as punishment. Do black leaders want reconciliation or revenge? Will they forgive those southerners? I support slavery memorials along side the confederate. That is talking TOGETHER.

It seems to me, as long as we keep having these conversations, prejudice will abound. We need to stop asking for ' race ' on applications. Stop pointing out what color or ethnicity a person is when people do something wrong or heroic. We need to just move on and talk about loving others. If a person has a history of being a rescued sex slave, wouldn't it be best to not keep bringing it up and dwelling on it, but focus on a better world and assuring all people have a past, but we all have value no matter what. Jennifer Trippeer before Obama came into office it was pretty calm. Then he mentioned differences and unfairness so many times he began to rile people up about differences and we've never recovered. You and I and the people on panels like this have done nothing to cause the history that should be looked at as the trouble our ancestors caused. None of us are responsible. Until we stop pointing out differences we're never going to get beyond it. We've been talking about it for a decade. Has it helped? I was hoping to go to their church service. He let me know, " We separate." I was not welcome in their Christian church. I totally got it! We need to pray for Keller and Sevenson. These guys are lost. Keller looks like he doesn't even want to be there. Grace, Justice and Mercy were rarely discussed. Mostly Race, Politics & White Guilt. It is embarrassing how much they missed the chance to speak of Grace. They are too politically correct and not biblically correct. They want to say all the right things to be "new age" cool. Nowhere in the Bible does it say that if I am white, I am part of the problem. Shame and guilt are not a part of reconciliation with God when you are born again and saved. God takes those things away. Why should I be guilty and shameful for things I did not do? This is not a sin of my own. The systemic narrative is tragic to society and therefore it is garbage. Protecting a person that commits a crime is dangerous. I nominate Stevenson to step up and model that theory in the police force. It's just another way to control a message for political power. Bryan is not a pastor and he sounds more like a pastor. He’s trying to solve the problem of structural racism and equality with love and respect for all of humanity. The real pastor, is full of guilt and is trying hard not to step on his white brother and sister toes. One thing about white supremacy and how it works is you can’t step too far out of the lines. You will lose your white audience. 60% of black male kids who don’t finish high school will end up in prison. This is the power of white supremacy and trauma. These poor stricken areas are allowed to exist to keep the status quo. If you don’t understand white supremacy and how it works, everything else will confuse you. Replace white supremacy/ racism with justice. Civilization was a mistake. If we can’t get along and love one another, we shouldn’t be allowed to exist. The white community did not obtain wealth on their own with no other race involved. Their wealth came from a massive land grab ( millions of native Americans were killed ) and three centuries ( 300 plus years ) of free labor from black enslaved Africans. All three races are considered humans.

Reverend Tim you hit the nail right on the head. We are Christian first before we are black, white, working class, upper class, Republican, Democrat. Christians of all races, class, political affiliation must first develop an attitude of "Are you not my brother" like William Wilberforce and those who fought against slave trade did in the UK and beyond. Christians must lead in the fight for justice. It will take a lot of soul searching and true repentance on all our part, but praise God we have the Holy Spirit to help us. Besides, America has already demonstrated what Christians can achieve when they pray. This is the right moment. The question I always ask is who is willing to lead this Christian movement?
