I think Ryan as well as the contest creators this season realize that yeah there are going to be a high bar when it comes to winning but it’s not just that. For a lot this is just a great opportunity to first be able to come and compete in a skate competition but also just experience an amazing park that many wouldn’t otherwise get a chance to skate.

Anyone who hates on someone based on skill level just outs themselves as a kook who doesn’t understand what skating is all about. Whether you’re trying something insane or just trying to 50 a curb, the homies will be just as hype when you land it. it’s about the effort you’re putting forth and the fun and camaraderie. I regularly skate with people who are WAY better than me and for a long time I was self conscious about trying what I perceived to be basic and lame compared to what they were trying on the same obstacle. But when I finally landed it they would all be super supportive and hyped for me. And it showed me that it doesn’t matter your skill level, just that you’re out there on your board pushing yourself and having a good time. Contests just invite the wrong kind of attitude where people write people off they perceive to be of a lower skill level and I get that. Obviously there’s massive skill gaps between some of the skaters in this contest. But the point is it doesn’t matter. Either enjoy watching someone push themselves at whatever skill level they’re at, or go watch a different video. The idea of talking shit over it baffles me. The idea that anyone “doesn’t belong” in this contest that’s purely for entertainment is ridiculous.

In 1988 when I was in the 8th grade I was much better then her and I wasn’t even considered amateur. 34 years ago… let that sink in 34 years ago at the age of 13 I was way better than she is today. I guess I shouldn’t be too mean. Women skateboarding is a lot like the Special Olympics you really shouldn’t say anything negative about them. Sky Brown however is on a whole other level however from any other woman in skateboarding
