Gracie Fields 'The Biggest Aspidestra In The World' 1937 78 rpm

As was usual with Gracie's records of the 20's and 30's one side was sung straight and the flip side was a comedy/music hall style song.
The other side to this is Now It Can Be Told posted a couple of months ago.
This side is one of her most famous comedy songs

Recall my parents being amused by this when heard on the radio. Little wonder someone had to write this comedy song. Such dowdy plants, but somehow every Victorian/Edwardian home had to have one!

It became iconic in any period drama even Monty Python included them in Victorian sketches. They grow in shade and don't mind bad air so grew well in coal fired rooms bringing a bit of greenery inside. Thanks for commenting Paul, I hope you are well

@@OldiesAl You're welcome! I'm fine & hope you're well too! In WW2 we had a radio mast used for propaganda. It was nicknamed 'The Aspidistra' perhaps inspired by this song.
