My Great Grandmother had been waiting 'two years long' when she got the telegram from the King to thank her for her sacrifice. Great Grandfather Fisher had been killed at the 'Battle of the Somme' (my Grandfather was eight when his father died)...

This song was written in 1981 and was an anti war song. The inspiration came from the russian British Crimean war with the charge of the light brigade who effectively were ordered to charge down the Russian army while on horseback. But due to mis communication this was a fatal error because the Light Brigade were a fast moving cavalry armed with Swords who were ordered into a ravine to charge down russian soldiers but the Russians had placed heavy guns on the hillsides and opened fire with a heavy bombardment of shells you can work out the end results yourself..this military action was remembered as the Charge of the light brigade.. it's rather apt now especially as the Crimean war was fought in the Ukraine. Now of course there is another war in Israel and Gaza. Seems humans will never learn
