He's had a few other hits, one when he was in Terry Dactyle and the Dinosaurs ... Seaside Shuffle. He's a friend of mine, an ex bf many many moons ago. When he first wrote the tune for Seaside Shuffle we used to busk it in Leicester square, him on accordian and me on spoons !!! He was a poor student in those days, we used to busk until we had enough money for a meal !!!

@@coolmum47 The BBC rarely repeated programs back then and up to the mid seventies they happily retaped over a lot of what they had. They didn't realise the future potential of their programing. Some things did get kept if they went abroad and made them money but even a lot of their popular shows got lost. It's possible that's what happened to the footage.

I remember having this on Christmas day when mums and dads would buy you either singles or albums as a present. Kitchen at parties is another 80s jona Lewis classic.

Reminds me of when I used to go around playing Christmas Carols on the Euphonium/Tuba with others. Unfortunately, work led me away from that direction but hope one day to play once again.

He's singing in the persona of, to coin a phrase, the Universal Soldier - that's why he says in the second verse that he's been fighting for centuries. But the song takes its imagery from the two so-called World Wars - the First being the last in which cavalry played any significant part, the Second being the source for references to nuclear weaponry and Winston Churchill. Also it was famously said that people expected the First World War to "be over by Christmas" (1914). Though Jona Lewie predates the label (hence Terry Dactyl etc!) he can nowadays be viewed as one of those stereotypical Stiff Records artists. Very British, very humorous, not a "good" singer but entertaining - and where he fits in the ranks is: less talented than Sensible or Dury/Blockheads, but more talented than Otway or Wreckless.

Another excellent choice, and another Christmas regular tune bringing back memories of the Christmas Day version of Top of the Pops as we settle back to chill with the family after a massive dinner!!

Yes, it's an anti-war song... Specifically it was originally released at Christmas 1980, although believe it or not, Jonah didn't originally intend it to be a Christmas song when he wrote it.

Tjis song was never actually written as a Christmas song it was written as a anti war song in 1981. The inspiration came about from the Crimean war and the fateful Charge of the Light Brigade when the British Light Cavalry were ordered to. vharge down the Russian Army. The Light Cavalry were horsemen armed only with swords and were a fast moving regiment who were effectively a strike force but due to a miscommunication on the battlefield they were ordered into a ravine to attack the Russian Army. Instead of finding a group of soldiers on foot they came up against heavy Artillery Guns mounted on the hillside and the rest is history so they say ut it was a massive British defeat for obvious reasons

Absolutely 💯 It was originally just an anti war song that became a Christmas favourite.

It became a firm favourite of the common or garden variety squaddie. Regardless of the time of year, if this comes on most squaddies would join in singing.

This song apparently isn't heard much in the US except in the Pacific Northwest, where I live. I can remember this all the way back to childhood, almost buried in my subconscious, and it always had such a Christmas feel to it. One of my favorites. The Cory Band is the version I'm used to.

Although this was thought of as an anti-war song, it was tremendously popular with the common or garden variety squaddie. Even in peacetime, based is various 'exotic' lands, come Christmas time, thoughts poignantly think of friends and family far away at home.

Hiya. It's an English thing. The way he sings, his accent, the sense of humour conveyed in the lyrics is based very culturally around the English who would get it and understand it totally. I like how romantic the scenes are with his lady, not a scrap of sexualized flesh on sight but still captures such poignancy.

'I Think I'll Get My Haircut' and 'You'll Always Find me in the Kitchen at Parties' are better songs than 'Stop The Cavalry' , as good as that song is, and then there is the hidden Jona Lewie instrumental gem, 'Rearranging the Deck Chairs on the Titanic', very much worth checking out.
