Dear Gracie, I like very much the way you explain and teach each letter or chord. You make it sound so simple but there‘s a lot hard work behind it. I not understood everything. Started watching your videos about a week and half ago, learned a lot so far. I have been playing bass for 50 years and did everything pretty much by ear. As the saying goes never too old to learn, and I always wanted to know more about music theory so I searched and found many people teaching it on youtube. However no one so far I have found explains stuff as well as you do and based on comments I have read I am not the only one who has noticed. So thank you for what you are doing it has no doubt shined new light on this subject for me.

At last Gracie, I have always been so confused with the sharp and flat symbols at the beginning of the staff? And now ‘BOOM’ thanks to you it all makes perfect sense and I am so grateful to you. What a great piece of tuition. Hey, any chance you could let me know where I could get one of the boards that you show us examples on ? Such a great piece of kit for learning. Just keep them coming Gracie, so so good and gotta be the best tuition ever. Much love Gary x

Gracie; Thanks for all the work you have done on these videos. I have just started going thru them and plan to study them all. However, I have a couple of questions that haunt me over the study of music. First, I am trying to learn the Bb trumpet so I don't understand how to apply this knowledge as my horn does not produce the same pitches as the piano (C on the staff is actually a Bb). When I play a C scale it is not really a C scale. Please explain so others using transposing instruments can learn to apply the knowledge you are conveying. Chuck

Over the past few months I’ve learned a lot of good music theory from your lessons - thank you. I hope you don’t think I’m being critical about this one but I had hoped there would have been some mention of the other modes in relation to key signature. For example you can have (please correct me if I’m wrong) a key signature that has no sharps or flats but is not in either C major or A minor but is in say G mixolydian (or in fact any of the other modes of the major scale) I have sometimes also at the beginning of a piece of music seen the mode written above the clef to clarify the scale being used. I’m only making this point to hopefully help others who when looking at a piece of music for example with no sharps or flats, automatically thinking C major or A minor when in fact it’s in G mix. or one of the other modes because this was something that confused me for ages.

Do you have a video on notes joined? I know the three stacked on top of each other but the note joined in 2, 3 or 4 following each other on the staff but joined with a bar above or below. Gracie thank you again for a great lesson. For me, as a budding song writer, I understand the importance of the theory you teach in this video, and how to recognise what key signature the musical piece is in, and how to identify the sharps or flats etc. What I really want to know is, once I have written a new song, or piano piece , how do I determine what key it is? Is it simply counting the sharps or flats in the piece, as they appear, or do you have any other tips or hints to help me ascertain the key I have written the music in? I enjoyed your circle of fifths video and it was very useful too. Thank you again. By the way , the cops are busy in New York and love to play their sirens!!
@GracieTerzian
@GracieTerzian 3 жыл бұрын
Great question! The simplest way is to figure out what is the final chord of the song. When you play this ____ chord at the end of the song, it should sound resolved. It could be a major or minor chord. Whatever that chord is... there is a 99% chance that is the key your song is in. So if the song ends with the chord G major..it's probably in the key of G major. Look at the final CHORD and not the final NOTE in the melody :). I have a video that discusses this right in the beginning of the video. Here is the link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gYSrlWaprquUb6M

Do major scales always follow a treble clef, and minors follow the bass clef? Or can either one be on either scale? How do you identify whether a scale is major or minor by looking at the sheet music? It appears that you always wrote the major scales on the top, and minor scales down below.

Thank you. As a soon to be 67 year old learning music theory you open my mind even further about the major and minor scale. I understand about the major scale and which ones in each scale are major and minor, perfect 4ths and fifths etc, but I do have a question about the relative minor scale taking the e minor scale for example. If e minor is number 1 in the scale is number 2, the F#, a minor or a major and so forth for number 3, 4 ,5 etc? Are there any major in the minor scale or any Perfect 4ths and fifths and are they major or minors? Thank you for all you do. I enjoy learning even more as a senior adult.

So i get that B(E) sharp and C(F) are enharmonic equivalents but why not just write the b(E) sharp as a c(F).... i literally answered this question in my head as i typed it out lol im pretty sure it would be bc everytime c is written in the sheet music it is automatically turned into c sharp therefore you have to write it as a b but sharpen it so it is played as a c. Also since the scale includes the c note it is probably too prominent to write a natural symbol every time so you swap it with the a note not in scale beneath it and sharpen it. Guessing math will be the same for the flats but reversed idk yet tho ill update if i finsih video and im wrong. Enlighten me if there is some actual mathematical reasoning or complex music theory reason i haven't been educated on yet!
