Today we are talking all about how I created my reading list for my general exams (some call them comprehensive or qualifying exams), and what I'm using to keep track of all my notes!

Also reading for comps! Decided to invest in an Apple Pencil for handwritten digital notes - we'll see how it goes. Solidarity with the book piles - would love to hear an update on your note process soon!

I find the PhD process in the US so interesting. When I reached out to a potential advisor and amongst other things asked what the PhD program looks like at her university here in the UK, and it's basically just your dissertation with 10 hours of training (academic writing, presenting at conferences etc) per year. So wildly different from how you guys do it!

Similar in Finland: Thesis and 40 credits (1cr=26 hours) that cover a seminar, some courses, conference papers, possibly articles etc.

I find this is true more broadly in Europe vs. the US! Most times, people already have their specific dissertation topic in Europe before beginning, while course work is a bigger emphasis in the US. I'm not exactly sure why though!

@@KatherineWeiss in Europe, the programs usually require prospective applicants to have their Master's degree. So, at least with the US, you're essentially getting paid to do Master's degree coursework if you have Phd funding. Some of the programs in Europe also want applicants to come with their own funding 😯

I love Susan Grayzel's work! I cite her in pretty much every paper and was able to talk with her in the spring about my work!
