Hi Dr.Maiden, I'm a political science major (wrapping up my sophomore year), and I just wanted to say thank you for this really helpful video. It was incredibly comforting and reassuring to hear you speak about this topic. I am really passionate about what I'm learning, and as the first person in my family to be pursuing polisci, it's a bit tough to do all this research and seek out internships/opportunities. However, I'm trying my best to learn more about polisci, building my internship/extracurricular experience, and learning about potential career paths. The sky really is the limit, and I'm excited for the future. Thanks again

I graduated with a Political Science degree in 2004. I have spent much of my career working in the field of public assistance benefits eligibility. I started out with a job determining eligibility for welfare programs like TANF, SNAP, and Medicaid. I used that experience to enter areas like Welfare Auditing, Business Analyst, and testing the software used to process welfare programs. Alot of folks think you need to enter politics with this degree, but I've found that the ability to interpret policy and research policy are aided by a Political Science degree.

Definitely not a dead-end degree! I know so many people who've built fascinating careers with a poli sci degree/double major/minor. If you love it, you'll find a way to make it work, even if your future career is only tangentially related to the major. There are basic skills you learn that will be useful in any career. So often I get students in my intro classes like "I don't really care about international relations" but I can hook em by the end! Let yourself be open. It might be that another class outside the major sparks joy for you and can help you refine your interests in political science. Don't be afraid to double major or add a minor too. And study abroad! I think ALL students should study abroad at least once in their life.

@politicsresearchsurvey
@politicsresearchsurvey 4 ай бұрын
@@egghead3812 Certainly! Here’s a revised version of your message: --- I’m entering my second year of Political Science, and it’s been an exciting journey. There are so many opportunities to get involved. Currently, I’m part of the OSC for the USMC while continuing my studies. I’m still exploring whether the military is the right path for me, but I’m making significant progress and learning a lot along the way. As an 18-year-old, I participated in three campaigns with assemblywomen and a congressman. Through these experiences, I’ve learned to be an effective public speaker, canvass efficiently, network, express my ideals, and apply my economic knowledge to real-world situations. I also helped establish a club on campus and took on the role of Relations Officer. In this position, I invite speakers, advocate for the club, and secure sponsorships to support our activities. Additionally, I had a great idea for a project and approached the Political Engagement Center on campus to get it started. I’m currently the first undergraduate working as the project manager with a professor (assisting) me on my own research project, which I hope to publish soon. Beyond my involvement with the USMC, my passion for this field extends far beyond serving. I’ve launched an initiative advocating against sexual assault and providing support and resources to students and community members. I should mention that I’ve achieved all this while being a first-generation college student living nine hours from home and coming from a low-income background. Despite the challenges, my passion and willingness to ask for help have been instrumental in my journey. Having just turned 19, I’m excited about what’s to come with this degree. If you’re considering pursuing it, I encourage you to follow your passion. This degree allows you to combine many different ideas and interests. I apologize if there are any typos; I got a bit excited to share this with you! Sincerely, Bre

It can actually be a big bonus to be a nontraditional student because comapnies will assume you have more life/career experience, as well as overall maturity. You're seeing the trend of hiring older, mid-career professionals in a lot of sectors, including things like Peace Corps and State Department. Don't count yourself out just because you're a "nontraditional" graduate.

Are there careers outside of academia that one can leverage a research degree in? I'm finishing a two-year research Master's in political science and might have the opportunity to earn a PhD in less than the normal amount of time, and while academia is less appealing to me, I'd love to know if there are new opportunities afforded to me by both having an MPhil and then having a PhD as well.
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
Hmm, this slipped through the crack somehow! Of course there are ways to leverage a PhD outside academia. It will open the door for you to be eligible for a host of positions in government, and plenty of NGOs, research firms, etc would also find it appealing. It's way more common in the hard sciences to get a PhD with no intention of joining academia, but it's not unheard of for the social sciences as well. A big thing to consider is the potential for a higher starting salary in public sector with the PhD. You also increase your chances of starting in a higher position, not entry level. A good friend of mine just made the tranisition from academia to private sector and she's thriving. Another never attempted academia. He's always been in the public sector with his degree. Good luck!

Oh goodness, I would imagine there being all kinds of applications for an expertise in both fields, both in academia and in industry. You could also so so much in terms of policy regarding rights/laws of computer programming, sotware, robotics, social media, etc. I know political scientists researching teaching on social media and politics, looking at ads and algorithims, etc. You could do stuff on AI and facial recognition and the politics behind that in government and private sector. So, in more curious on why you would think that its not likely for a P.S. Major to become a politician? I believe one of the most popular career pathways was for individuals to get a P.S. degree, go into Law and then become a Politician? I have also seen many go the business route of being a Finance or Economics major and then eventually running for office. What route would you recommend for someone specifically wanting to go the Political route?
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
Don't get me wrong, political science as a major is quite common, especially for people who go pre-law. I'd say that once upon a time, lawyer was the post common profession for politicians, and many of them had undergraduate degrees in political science, history, or some other social science discipline. But you're currently seeing a transition across the country at all levels of politics where people are being brought into politics through their activism. So they are hospital workers, teachers, union reps, heck even housewives, and they are being pulled into politics often based on single-issue activism. A lot of politicians are also midcareer professionals--school and healthcare administrators, etc. So while you CAN pursue a career in politics and run for elected office with a political science degree, it is even more likely to use your polisci degree in a supporting role like working for a senator, while the senator themselves might be a former doctor or school principal. Does that make sense? It will always be valuable and be the more traditional path in, but it's not the only path.

@@DrEmilyMaiden So then, from your professional opinion, what would be the most “accredited” degree that would be most useful for those of us, who are attempting a career in politics at a State and Federal level? Im only asking as an individual who is attempting to gather information about this, before I go to college.
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
@@A.n.o.n.y.m.o.u.s- It really depends on what kind of position you're hoping to pursue. Are you thinking about something like becoming a member of Congress? If that's the case, sure you can make a good case with a political science degree/law degree. But if you want to do something like a city council or an elected sheriff or judge position, then there is such a diversity of careers you can transition into that. There's so much option now. I wouldn't want you to pursue polisci just because you think it's the only way to become a politician. By all means, you can't go wrong with polisci, but it's not the only way in. Best of luck!

In the case of several of the jobs I discussed in this video, friends have these positions without an MA. Now, in some cases they've gone on to get JDs, a few have MAs, and in the case of the doctor I mention he obviously has an MD. There is a trend in especially the NGO world and government that the MA is the new BA, but you can secure positions with just a BA. In some cases, friends pursued their MA only after they were already in positions and leveraged the education for salary increases. Good luck!

Good morning Dr Emily, Dr please I have a question regarding that topic. I feel the most topic I'm always attracted to is politics! I'm consistently following up with all the videos and news related to it and on the top of that I REALLY REALLY wanna be a politician so I can fix a lot of things and influence millions and millions of lives! When I see any politician I ask myself why it isn't me who is in his place? I can definitely be in his shoes! Does what I'm saying demonstrating any real indicator that I can be successful in that field? If yes, I'm not even western (I'm Egyptian) and I'm planning to study politics in Germany can I be a politician in a country where I'm not even born at? Even after like 10-15 years from now? Cz I feel soooooooo confused and I'm not sure what to do in my life whether to complete in computer science ( my current field that I'm not really passionate about) or to complete in the field that I'm really really passionate about! Yeah BTW I can't be a politician in Egypt cz there is no politics in Egypt just extreme dictatorship and poverty! Thanks alot in advance :)

Most politicans don't go into their life/career planning for a career in politics. If you look up the background of politicians, they can be teachers, lawyers, health professionals, administrators, business people. Pick a career and you can transition it into politics. So you can major in what you want, prusue a career in what you want, and you can transition it into a political career. When it comes to college, study what you want! If you think CS will give you a good career, study that as a major and double major/minor in political science! Best of luck to you!

This is a difficult question to answer. There are so many options when it comes to where and what to study. The world is literally your oyster. It would depend on what kind of further study you want to do--a second BA degree, an MA, an MBA, a JD, a PhD. From there you have to think about kinds of programs/subfields.

It's a very difficult market all around right now. Even before covid, academic jobs were slim. It's part of a broader national issue with universities shifting away from tenure-track positions and offering only visiting and adjunct positions. I'm sorry if you're having a hard time finding employment in the field just now.

Hello Dr. Maiden! First and foremost, thank you for your informative videos. I have a personal question, that hopefully you can provide some direction on. I have a strong desire to obtain a degree in political science. But, my ultimate dream is to create a life abroad and amongst the world (working for international companies). Do you have any suggested educational paths or career fields that would facilitate this goal? Kind Regards!

Wow, great question. This is a whole video unto itself. There are quite literally limitless possibilities for finding ways to live/work abroad. I should do a separate video addressing this. For now, I'll say that within poli sci I would select the comparative politics or IR track. These classes will help prepare you in terms of area studies, languges, global current events, U.S. foreign policy, etc. A great first step for figuring out how to live abroad is to do a study/internship/trip abroad. Take a class that goes abroad, do a summer language institute in-country. The world is a big place so once you've narrowed down countries/languages that interest you, you can start to move forward with immediate concrete plans to study/travel there. From there, it really becomes like a snowball rolling down hill! But this is a great question and I'll put it on my list for a video of its own.

thank you for this very informative vedio but I have a quick question, what master degree can we take after having the political degree
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
The sky is literally the limit. I have students right now in my Master's of International Affairs class with undergrad majors in political science, criminal justice, English, business, and pyschology. You can leverage a political science degree into all kinds of Master's programs across the social sciences, even into business. It might be more difficult to transition into a hard sciences Master's like Biology but even that is possible, say if you doule major or if you do a BS in political science and take a few remedial Bio courses. Good luck!

do you have tips on internship ideas for someone pursuing a BA in Political Science who isn’t sure what they want their career to be?
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
There's a host of options rangning from interning for a politician, a law firm, a NPO/NGO. It depends on what some of your other interests are. Like, if you're interested in the environment, then a conservation NGO or even a local/state park could be worthwhile. There's always a way to find the political science angle. You could work in refugee resettlment, youth for development, options are kind of endless. Your university/department most likely has someone serving in the position of internship coordinator and they could let you know what kind of options are available.

Hello Dr. Maiden, I have a bachelor's degree in history and political science and I am looking into masters programs but I was wondering if you had any thoughts about what I could do to utilize both degrees while trying to transition into a masters degree. I recently graduated and am taking some time off to determine exactly what i want to do and am highly considering law school. I rushed into my undergrad so i want to take some time to find what i want to do for the rest of my life. any help would be greatly appreciated and thank you for the helpful video

I would recommend doing an internship with a law firm to see if law might be right for you. A lot of people want to go to law school until they realize that being a lawyer is a lot of moving papers around and filing, haha! Same with politics. Once you actually intern for a politician, you see how tedious it all can be. I always recommend getting real-world experience before jumping into graduate school. Whether it's paid or unpaid, go out and do something. Get some experience. Put skills to use. I bet your department or even your university have resources for you to explore to help place you with internships. Definitely talk to your department chair. Even as an alumni, I wouldn't be afraid to reach out.

@@DrEmilyMaiden I have actually just recently finished my internship with my local state house and am looking for practical experience with a law firm to gain practical experience. I agree with you that this is a important thing to do. I want to continue my education but am holding off because online schools have been difficult

Hi I'm new here. Can a political science graduate work abroad?
@DrEmilyMaiden
@DrEmilyMaiden 3 жыл бұрын
This question has a complicated answer so the best I can do is say "it depends." And what I mean by that is the fact that every country will have different rules about whether and how you can work. If you asking broadly can you find work as a graduate student while living abroad, absolutely. Just please do it legally. I actually have a whole video on working overseas: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mIaygJKqfNerrZI

Other than teaching others to be 'political scientists' , waitressing science would be a good field to try.
