Plate Tectonics is an over-lying theory presently used by most Earth Scientists to describe motion within the outer-most layer of the solid Earth (also known as the lithosphere)
This theory implies that the lithosphere has plates which are varying in size and constantly moving at varying speed. So basically Plate Tectonics refers to the movement of the lithospheric plates of the earth. Where in, these plates pull apart, slide by each other or collide.
