the answer of this type of question will always be maximum area=(perimeter/4)^2

The maximum area will always be a square. In this case, all four sides will be 300 m. Fun fact: given the same constraint, here 1200 meters, a circle will always have a greater area than the square.

How do you get 0 for the w when doing the equation

The equation is in factored form and w is a common factor. Whenever you have a common factor that is a variable the solution to that variable is always 0. For example if I have 2x(x-3)= 0 the two solutions are 0 and 3.
