Thank so much for your teaching about phrasing, timing, and expression. I love the way you play this piece. I'll keep playing it (not "working" on it...but playing it!) I want PLAY my guitar and not WORK my guitar!

Every piece I want to learn which I search out on KZbin inevitably leads me to your rendition of it. And there are a lot of renditions out there. Very emotive and exceptionally played as usual. Thank you for again showing how a piece is supposed to be played as well as the clear instruction about how important the melody is as well as the economy of motion. Very helpful. The harmonics and overtones around the 7-8 minute mark occurring while you play the single notes sound so harp like and then like a piano at the 12 minute mark. That Scott sounds lovely.

I often played this for my kids in the hallway outside their bedrooms as they settled down for the night. A favorite.

Glad you liked it! If approached methodically it's not too tricky but, yes, a favourite for sure.

You'll get there, just take everything slowly and don't be a rush to progress.

Great lesson as usual! I had forgotten for a moment it was in E major, so was forgetting the D# in the 9th position stuff. You make my playing start to sound like music. What seemed daunting now seems very possible. Made my way through grade 3 & 4 book and looking forward to the next grades while I keep solidifying the earlier works.

In terms of grade 4 though, Lagrima is a difficult one, although it's quite short. So take extra time with it.

Hey Brad, Finished off learning this piece just now and just wanted to say thanks for putting up all these instructional videos! I started out with your method books just over two and a half years ago and it's been a pleasure working through it all. Though I think I'll be looking for a teacher from this point as this piece was a real challenge muscially for me, which I hadn't encountered previously and caused a lot of frustration lol. Looking forward to the grade 5 pieces for sure. Thanks again!

Lagrima is a wall that I make most students climb at some point. I try in my series to be as gentle as possible and I took forever finding repertoire that was easy to progress with but at some point it just has to happen! It just takes extra time and maybe some technique review.

Hello Bradford, Question for you: in the first beat of the fifth measure, what if one plays the e (third string ninth position) not with a barre, but with just the 1 finger, and then only place the barre as of the second beat? My impression is that the tempo may be slow enough to be able to do this and it avoids the most difficult barre in the first beat. Does this make any sense? Thanks for the feedback, David

Agreed. That’s how I’m doing it. I just can’t make it work otherwise. Not ideal but does work.

How long should someone be playing guitar before attempting to learn a piece at this level?
@Thisisclassicalguitar4 жыл бұрын
It's not so much a question of how long, it's more about how your progress has been. In my system you o through two method books and then the grade 1-4 books until you arrive at this. This is a least a few years for most people but it depends on your previous musical level, amount of practice, quality of practice, and if you have a teacher. Having a teacher will make sure you resolve problems much quicker.

@@Thisisclassicalguitar Hey. Just started this piece this week. Yes, the barre is tricky, but working on the Sor Op 31 # 20 has really pushed me along. :-) Your lessons on this piece will be invaluable. Thank you.

Is this now a grade 5 piece
@Thisisclassicalguitar4 жыл бұрын
I don't follow any specific system for grading, it's all arbitrary depending on how high quality you wish to play it. I more base it on the technical difficulty (stretches, barre, register, etc).

Ouch. My timing of this piece has been off forever. Red face. Back to the drawing board.
@Thisisclassicalguitar4 жыл бұрын
A week of super slow practice with a metronome helps to reset everything and be technically correct. Then turn it off and relax it all. You'll be right on track!

I feel you! I tend to rush this piece. He plays it so beautifully I feel like I need to go back to the drawing board with this one too. Or perhaps just purchase his book... 😉
