Is Classical Guitar Easy to Learn?

I appreciate that you play it at a tempo where the piece breathes. You don’t choke the life out of it by playing it super fast

Thank you for these reviews! Cordoba is definately going to be my pick for a first classical guitar. But I am curious. What's the general opinion on classical guitars with a cutout? The Cordoba C5-CE is a little more expensive but i'm wondering if it would still be a great first classical to learn on, or if i should just go with one without the cutout. What do classical guitar teachers think about them? Would it be worth it as a beginner to be able to reach those lower frets? Does the cutout actually affect the sound?

Thank you for such valuable solid advice! I am looking forward to working through it all and learning to apply it all as I learn to play! As a new beginner I have been thinking a lot about how to approach this, and there are two things that have really stood out. The first is that I immediately saw how important it will be to approach it as a hobby, and not just as a goal. Both are important, but if I am not enjoying the day-by-day practice times it increases the chance of discouragement. A hobby is something that you love just for the doing of it, and that is what I want. The second thing is that as I practice and learn proper technique, i also want to take time to learn some pieces that I really love and that touch my heart. Playing pieces just to be able to have better technique is necessary for growth, but I also want to learn how to express the soul of a piece, and I think that will include choosing pieces that move my soul. Just the other day I came across a video of a classical guitarist playing "Yesterday Once More" by The Carpenters, and she played it with such feeling that all of the beauty and melody came across. Although I love so much of the classical repertoire, I do think that taking the time to learn other "more popular" songs that speak to my heart will be of immense benefit in so many ways. I have just found your free pdf of "Classical Guitar Method Book Vol. 1" to start with, and want to say "Thank You" for making this available. I have a strong feeling that I will be looking into more of your course in the future!

Glad you found the video beneficial. Yes, no one course will have all the music to inspire you so students should indeed seek out additional repertoire to play.

I am following your books to learn classical guitar. It's been fun so far. This piece is so challenging, when you add all those ornamentation. Do you expect your students to learn each piece to play just like you play? I appreciate your response in advance.
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar Күн бұрын
No, to be clear, I present the videos as examples to listen to for context or inspiration but not for exact emulatation. In particular, tempos should be at your own level and you never want to play faster than you can play well. Also, ornamentation at this level, although in my book, should be practiced but can be left out when performing.

Hmm. When you say you are short, would you mind giving us an idea of how short? I am a short person 160 cm tall but most importantly my hands are small and i have always thought this is the reason why my index makes the cords sound so terribly awful [particularly first position on the neck).. like i cannot press enough or i cannot put it in the right position. I noticed when i place the neck steep it improves. So i thought this support may help me but I may be too short for this to be confortable..

I'm about 5'7" so not sure. Maybe the GuitarLift would be a safer bet but I sure do like Le Support. It just barely works for me but mainly due to my smaller guitar rather than my height.

At the end of the piece on the 17th measure, I accidentally played G instead of B and kind of like it that way also. Is it wrong to play it like that and should I stick to the original instead?
@Thisisclassicalguitar
@Thisisclassicalguitar 2 күн бұрын
If you KNOW that you are changing the note then I think that is fine, if you like it do it. O'Carolan's music is not strict anyway, lots of variations on the notes. Unlike Bach or something where the motif is very important and not to be changed (if possible or preferable).

The angle of your strings towards the saddle doesn’t change. That angle is determined by where the holes in your bridge are, not by the height of the pickup.

Why doesn't the notation specify a fingering of 0 or the string number for open strings in the upper position. For example the chord in 4th position in bar 3. Normally I'd assume the G and B lower on the staff should be fretted notes in 4th position because it doesn't specify it should be open (which isn't in position 4). I had to check the tab to verify it should be B and G open strings. Thats very confusing for me.
@Thisisclassicalguitar

Good point, I shouldn't assume that it is implied by the texture. I'll add fingering there on the next revision.

Good evening Bradford, thank you - I have only started learning to play guitar and am in my 60's. Your book Classical Guitar Volume 1 and the instructive video lessons are clear concise and so encouraging. Thank you - I have watched all the first lesson through and now back to practice. I was not 100% sure of what style I wanted to play but have fallen in love with listening and watching pieces by Alexandra Whittingham which led me to feel classical was what I really do want to learn to play in my heart and I will continue to work my way through Volume 1 with your help. I also have signed up for the newsletter and Facebook and Instragram. If only I had known about you years ago, I may have had the courage to pick up a guitar to learn earlier. Thank you.
