do you think it would work well if the magnet of the sagework was on top of the side "walls" of the inside of the guitar? im asking this because my guitar is reasonably more thinner than the one shown in the video and that seems a really nice support!

Great tips! My problem with scrape on the wound strings, however, is with my right hand thumb (no nails, flesh only) sliding a bit on the bass strings, enough to produce an unwanted noise, which is noticeable during recording. Any advice on that - polished strings or different thumb angle or maybe both? My La Bella 900 effectively keep the left-hand squeaks to a minimum but my sensitive Shure MV88 mic will pick up all that noise from the right hand fleshy thumb. Thanks! :-)

I guess it wouldn’t be too difficult to add a flat piece of cork to one of the clamps on the Murata to make it fit snugly on a raised fingerboard guitar. Maybe slide it underneath the transparent tube?

Hi Bradford, been enjoying the series of studies you have been doing which are always very informative Bravo!!! (some very tricky) , I have also spent some time revisiting the sagreras books (orig ed) to tidy up technique and just for fun... and noticed how focused the early lessons (BK1) are on the use of rest stroke including in this one the melody line. I have always been able to pick out melody lines using a quicker or firmer free stroke or quieter accomp. Whilst i use rest stroke sometimes on single melodic lines i find this one particularly difficult to achieve the unison required between the bass and melody notes at the same time usually ending with a slight split between them. Any advice on whether this is aspect of playing is worthy of focus ? .... Number 67 is so much easier to employ the rest stroke as it sits out on its own 🙂
@Thisisclassicalguitar3 күн бұрын
It's great thing to practice but in performance I use free stroke. Practicing with rest strokes in this fashion is good for you though, ensures good string contact.

It was VERY encouraging for me to hear you say that most students can't move the 3rd finger independently at first, but that within a short time they begin to be able to. I have felt very discouraged at my inability to move this finger by itself as a beginner to the point where I start having doubts about whether I will ever get any better. This encourages me to keep going!

I am not a luthier, but I have considerable woodworking experience, and I wouldn't say I like the idea. I suspect any serious luthier would be offended by such an idea. Not for me.
@Thisisclassicalguitar4 күн бұрын
Really? I've found most luthiers, although making a work of art, are also making an amazing tool for musicians to use. I'd say most that I've met are incredibly interested in innovation and finding solutions to making their instruments as useable as possible.

Hi Maestro, I don't read musical notation, and I'm learning Gran Vals at the moment using tablature, I'm so happy to chance upon your walk throughs of said song, and I've subscribed because of this. I feel that the way you talk about the intricacies of the song is like I'm having a Guitar teacher friend who appeared magically to me in my time of need :D I love the good tip of moving the right plucking hand back towards the bridge to get a louder and clear Natural Harmonic, for I've found my harmonic is soft. at 10:20, I loved that you gave your inputs on the slide into the Barre, and you ditch the grace note slide for a solid placement. However I'll try to integrate the slide for I love the sound. at 13:25min, I felt that area is difficult for me with the chord changes but I think with practice , I can do it :D (Hopefully hahaha) the 14:12min mark where you found the portion most difficult, is where I am at now. I'm Slowly working my way through this part of the song. I will keep in mind your tip about Straight index finger for a better Barre. Thanks for a Great Video!!

Glad you found it helpful. Most of my music has a notation edition but also a separate tab edition in the same pdf. Just so you know.

I regard an etude that is not suited for public performance as a check to see if I can play it technically. Which doesn't mean perfectly at full speed. I need a lot of time to play something to perfection the way it satisfies me. That is why I am very selective about pieces that I really want in my repertoire and for which I am willing to invest time.

Thank you very much Bradford, it was a brilliant series , you did a super job ,this one is bit of a beast !! What I took from this video for the moment is what you were saying at the end , to practice the piece at very slow , medium and fast tempos all in the one practice session ! I ve never done that , it’s always starting slow and building up the speed over time , great practice tip that !!
@Thisisclassicalguitar8 күн бұрын
Yes, but only in small fragments at faster speeds. Usually, this indicates to me what kind of work I need to do, or to keep in mind, as I build the tempo. Usually this is relaxation and a lighter but focused touch.

This piece was really good practice for transitioning between chords. For the troublesome A to B transition, I had to take out the chord shape and just practice hopping the 2nd finger over to B. I found that you've got to use your right thumb for the timing, holding A until the exact moment the thumb is about to hit the A string. I practiced that a couple hundred times, then went back to the piece 😅
