Casey, Golden Mane was written as soprano or mezzo-soprano role, not a tenor one. You won't find a production anywhere with the male fox sung by a man.

I was wondering why the badger left his home before and now I know why. I've only seen the cartoon version before and I thought that the animated version made up that scene for comical effect.

Come on, @cooks37, we all know Janacek is beautiful in Czech. However, this is a young artist program and if there is so much time available, these young singers should focus in learning the staging and the difficult music, instead of a foreign language they don't know at all. Give them time to grow and don't blame it on a nation...

@cooks37 taking pot shots is always fun but ... 1. this opera frequently gets performed as "Das schlaue Füchslein" and 2. the entire (european) history of opera is filled with translated performances of Wagner (even a 2017 Monte Carlo production of Tannhäuser in French), Mozart, Puccini .. anything you want.
