My number 1 advice, don't pick the shortest academy just to skirt around the training/education. Look at the bigger picture/package to find what'll suit you best long term, both career and survival.

My academy in CT was 29 wks-8 hrs a day, then 10 wks of field training. Grueling and rugged but awesome at the same time!

If you are applying to a department that sends you to a 3 week academy, take back your application and apply somewhere else. That department doesn't give a shit about your training or safety.

There were until very recently places in Illinois that had NO academy training. They basically gave you the 40hr armed guard class and threw you on the street. Terrifying.

We had this group called the "Illinois police reserves" they had an "academy" that was all in house and would contract themselves out to pd's for extra manpower. Using a loophole in Illinois law that required you to be certified within one year of employment no single officer would ever work for any department for more than a year at a stretch. Truly scary shit that they got away with for decades.

@@freefieldtraining that's crazy... Makes me realize how lucky I have been with my training. 5 years in law enforcement (3 in corrections and 2 on the streets). My current department is amazing with the amount and quality of training we get.

My dept doesn’t send us for a whole year. Small dept with not a lot of money. I went strait to FTO. In the car with partner for 3 weeks. Then in my own unit with FTO shadowing all my calls for just at 3 months. I would love to go to academy sooner. In the dept defense, the FTO explained the academy as giving me a bag of tools and sending me back to my dept to learn how to use them VS he is handing me tools one by one and teaching me as it comes. I can see the benefit of both 🤷🏿♂️

Our academy was 850 hours / 22 wks. In colleges, you aren’t in class 8hrs/day, so when you compare the number of hours actually in class, that’s about a 3yr degree.

Is called a FTO. Field training officer. After graduating from any police academy thats who you spend your time with, learning policy and procedure within your department. Something you claim to be. 🤔

Is there anything I can study before I go to the Academy? Like laws or anything you think would help? Going in February, for 6 months.

Would you recommend a Sirt pistol for dry-fire? They're kinda pricey so just curious what you thought about them. Merry Christmas!! Thanks for your service!!
@freefieldtraining4 жыл бұрын
They are expensive, but they are also cheaper than buying another pistol. A good second option for getting a pistol to dry fire practice with is to get a used police trade g22. You can pretty much name your own price on those these days and then you have another duty gun in a pinch.

In a previous video, you mentioned how for many people, police careers only last a couple of years on average. What is the reason for that? I have been on 25+ ride alongs in the north Illinois suburbs and could not think of a reason why one would quit.
