Learn how to bud graft citrus fruit trees successfully. I have found that chip budding of citrus gives a high success rate and is more versatile than citrus T-budding. Unlike the T-bud, the chip bud can be used even when the bark of the rootstock is not slipping. The chip bud is useful for grafting orange trees, grafting lemon trees, or any other kind of citrus fruit including mandarins, limes, grapefruit, pummelos, or kumquats.

In California, the collection of any citrus propagative materials, including budwood and seeds, from non-registered sources is illegal. Any citrus trees grown or grafted in California must come from source trees registered with either:

Leaf miners cause curling. You can make an easy DIY spray w/equal parts water, dish soap and veg oil. I also add a little eucalyptus oil to dissuade other pests, but it's not necessary. Spray all leaves, not just the affected ones. God bless your efforts!

+WorldCommander You're welcome. Good luck with your grafting. I agree that factors like soil, climate, and rootstock affect the flavor of the fruit. It is unlikely that you have any sort of mutation that would be superior to the varieties available from CCPP. You can order any of those varieties inexpensively from CCPP.

I have a 20 year old citrus tree that is about 6" in diameter. Very health tree; produces juicy oranges all year round, except that they are sour. No one wants to eat them. Is there something I can do to modify the tree? If not, I need to remove the tree. Can I graft a few different orange buds onto this tree? Is there a way to ensure that the new plant will provide good oranges?

Do you think cutting a slit across the top of the bud might break the apical dominance? For example, in a situation where one wants to multigraft.

My sister has a wonderful lemon tree that was planted before she bought the house. I would like to use the technique that will most likely clone her tree...air layer vs grafting vs something else. What should I consider?
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 7 жыл бұрын
Where does your sister live and where would you want to move the clone? If you live in California and certain other places, cloning your sister's tree and moving it could cause a devastating disease outbreak in a new area. There are many wonderful lemon tree varieties that can be purchased from nurseries. If you live in California or another place threatened by huanglongbing disease, my recommendation would be for you to look through the photos and descriptions here to figure out what kind of tree your sister has and then buy this type of tree from a local nursery: www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/citrus/lemons.html

I followed this method and grafted a bunch of trees back in August. I had good success (around 90%) and now the buds are starting to grow. When is it best to prune off the crippled top? I would like to sooner rather than later, but I don't want to unduly slow the growth of the buds. Is there a recommended time window?
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 6 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your success! I usually wait for a bit of growth from the graft before pruning off the top, but if you want to prune it off sooner you should be fine. Some nurseries even prune off the top at the same time that they graft the tree to save on labor costs.

Hi, rootstock and chip cuts must be shallow? If you do the cut shallow on the rootstock, there is also cambium lenghtwise light green on the whole surfacre not only the tiny strips on the sides right? If the cut on the rootstock is deeper there is cambium only on the sides, also on the chip? By apple people do also thicker. Thanks
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor Жыл бұрын
I don't think the cuts absolutely must be shallow to make it work, but I find it easier because shallow cuts expose more cambium at the surface. I haven't ever gone to the extent that the entire surface that I have cut is cambium, but maybe that is possible and useful if you are working with small rootstocks. This year I have been grafting to some very small one-year-old roostocks and the shallow cuts work well. The diameter of the rootstocks is so small that it would be difficult to go deep anyway. I've never chip budded apples, but in my experience apples are the easiest fruit trees to graft; If I ever had a failed apple graft, I can't remember it.

I think it is better to cut them off as soon as you see them.

You know, I am just a simple teen guy who grows 15 year old lemon tree from a seed, and it has 1 inch thick stem on it. It never bloomed trough out these 15 years. Today I was at my local garden center, and I saw that they have thrown away a perfectly good grafter lemon tree, because it was snapped. It still had fruits, and was green. I found the day it was snapped. So, they let me to take a few cuttings, and today I grafted it in two places, just like you told in the video. It is winter, and I did that indoors and set it in the light corner of my windowsill. What should I look for? Will it heal? It is just an experiment, but having a mature graft, who would give me fruit would be really cool. In the summer time it grows outdoors in bright shade. full sun in the morning and full sun in the evening. Last summer it produced me two new thick branches, but no flowers. I guess citrus plants grown from seeds never bloom?
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 6 жыл бұрын
Citrus trees grown from seed but not grafted take a very long time to bear fruit. 15 years may be enough time, but if kept in a pot and pruned it may never get big enough to bloom. Grafting avoids this problem and fruiting is possible much sooner. Warm temperatures create the best conditions for a citrus graft to heal: www.fruitmentor.com/grafting-citrus-trees-best-time If your temperatures are not warm enough your graft will be less likely to succeed, but there is still a chance. I assume that you are outside of California, but hobbyists in California must always order budwood for grafting citrus from the CCPP: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqKomK2JqKqahNE

There is a chance of HLB in any tree in California now. In areas of Southern California the disease is now spreading exponentially. The only way to be sure that your graft does not infect the other lemon tree is to order budwood from the CCPP.

I got disease free budwood, I sterilized the very sharp grafting knife, I affixed them very snugly against the cambium, and I tried to take as little time as possible from cut to placement. I'm thinking maybe I used too many layers when wrapping the grafting tape.

Hey just found your videos as i was curious about grafting. I was wondering if you could make a video on the best options for selecting rootstocks and the best ones for different plant hardiness zones. Also have you ever cloned a citrus tree with a cutting? Do you recommend it? Id imagine it would take much longer to become a tree compared to grafting to a rootstock.
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the suggestion! I will consider doing something on rootstocks. In the meantime, here is a book with some information on rootstock that you may find interesting: www.citrusvariety.ucr.edu/links/documents/Bitters.pdf I have done some cloning of citrus trees from cuttings. It will be the subject of another KZbin video later this year showing grafting and rooting in the same step. I do not recommend it because the process is so slow and it is so much work compared to grafting to a seedling grown from seed. One reason to do it would be to root a rootstock that is otherwise hard to find. It is possible to order cuttings of many varieties of rootstocks from CCPP.

what do you think of multi grafting a tree ? by that i mean putting differents spicies on the same tree
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 9 жыл бұрын
Arnaud cordier I have found that multi-grafting works well. I have a navel orange tree that produced about 400 oranges a year - more than my family could eat. I was able to add mandarin oranges, blood oranges, grapefruit, pummelos, and limes. They all produce high-quality fruit, so now we get a nice variety of fruit from that tree. When multi-grafting a tree it is very important to use disease free budwood, especially in Asia, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, and now northwestern Spain - and any place having either the Asian Citrus Psyllid or the African Citrus Psyllid. I would not recommend the technique in this video for multi grafting a tree; it can be difficult to get the bud to grow. For multi grafting a tree, I prefer the technique in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mHbWmJyFqNWNnqM For larger diameter branches, more than one scion can be inserted. Thank you for liking the video!

Arnaud cordier Thank you! Do you grow inside or in a greenhouse? I guess that you may have hard freezes in Belgium.I know that there are citrus budwood programs similar to California's CCPP in Europe. Have you looked into them? I hope to learn about the European programs as it could be helpful to viewers in Europe. California has received some of the best citrus varieties from France. Perhaps there is a way to order budwood from France. I have looked at some of the websites, but without French language skills they are hard to navigate. It looks like budwood can be ordered here, but I wonder if they send to other countries: www.corse.inra.fr/Outils-et-Ressources/Conservatoire-Agrumes

Very informative, fruitmentor. This is new to me but I want to propagate a delicious Ruby Red grapefruit tree. Would bud graft be best? Would it grow from seeds? I'm in California also.
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 8 жыл бұрын
+WorldCommander I have read that grapefruit are polyembryonic which means that they could be grown from seeds. It would take a long time for them to fruit, however. California has a number of selections/improved mutations of Ruby Red (including Henderson Ruby, Ray Ruby, Star Ruby, Rio Red, and Flame) so it should be easy to find a tree wherever you live. Budwood of these varieties is available from CCPP, but given the availability of these varieties in nurseries, you may want to save yourself a lot of effort by buying a tree from a local nursery.

They can stay viable for many months, but the success rate will decline over time. Sometimes mold will start to grow on the bud sticks if they have been stored a long time. I would expect a good success rate after 3-4 weeks.

Thank you for sharing your grafting knowledge. I have a question: I have a 30 year old Satsuma mandarin tree, here in Charleston, SC. It has consistently born outstanding fruit. Our temperature has on occasion dipped below 20 degrees, but the tree survived each time. My question is this: If I air graft a branch from the tree, will the new graft lose its ability to withstand freezing temps? Just wondering if that was part of the reason for grafting onto a rootstock. Thanks!!!
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The rootstock plays an important role in cold hardiness. For example, a rootstock like flying dragon would help the grafted tree to survive lower temperatures. A rootstock also provides other benefits such as resistance to poor soil conditions or disease. See here for a nice book on rootstocks that may be more than you want to read: citrusvariety.ucr.edu/links/documents/Bitters.pdf

@@Fruitmentor Thanks for the tip. The tree that I have produces very sweet mandarins. Will the rootstock affect the taste? I ask this because I planted 10 trees at a school. While the trees are all growing vigorously, the fruit doesn’t seem to be as sweet as my tree. Thanks again- This is something I definitely want to explore. Especially since the infection of trees in Florida is affecting the distribution of citrus trees around the country.

@@Fruitmentor I have a friend in Lake City, SC, (zone 8), who had a Satsuma orchard, with over 100 trees. A couple of years ago we had a prolonged period of extremely cold days. The temps in Charleston got down to about 15 degrees for several days. The temps in Lake City dropped to about 8 degrees. Needless to say, my friend lost the entire orchard. Today he is replanting, but is including frames around each tree so they can be covered in the event of another killing frost.
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. The rootstock affects the flavor of mandarins. The fruit from a tree with a dwarfing rootstock will tend to have good-tasting fruit. I made the mistake of grafting mandarins to a lemon tree (fast growing rootstock) and the fruit was terrible in both flavor and texture. I think flying dragon would be a good rootstock for you. Maybe that is the rootstock of your cold hardy tree.

I think that the CCPP would be able to ship to Canada with no problem, but it will be more expensive. I used to work for a Canadian company and I sometimes flew citrus from the U.S. to Canada and shared it with my friends at work. I declared everything at the border, but since there is no commercial citrus in Canada they allowed it with no problems. Because of the risk of pests and disease it is impossible to bring citrus into the U.S. like that.

Thank you! I made a couple of other videos that show the grafting of additional varieties to existing trees: kzbin.info/www/bejne/laiTZmSwrsaWoa8 kzbin.info/www/bejne/roWnoIpjg9h9iqc Please keep in mind that the rootstock affects the characteristics of the fruit and that a rootstock that is suitable for lemon may not necessarily produce the best fruit depending upon the grafted variety. I understand that grafting pummelos to lemon trees will give poor results. I have also heard that if grafting oranges to lemon trees, mandarin oranges may produce better results than naval oranges or sweet oranges. I have tried grafting mandarin oranges to a lemon tree for myself to see for myself. I have fruit on the tree now, so I should find out soon.

Thanks for the video. Last month I grafted a 4 of my citrus trees. 4 out of 5 of the grafts have healed/sealed. I peeled the tape off off the graft to allow the leaves to start growing. My question to you, 1. I covered the graft with a bag to stop water getting to it when it rains. Since I have removed the tape, should I keep it covered still to protect it from getting wet? 2. Do I have to completely cut the top part of the plant off to force it to put energy into the leaves? Or can I get away with just cutting the tip end of the upper leaves?
@Fruitmentor
@Fruitmentor 8 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I am glad that you enjoyed the video. Congratulations on your success! Once a graft is healed, I do worry about it getting wet. If you can see that it is healed then you do not need to cover it. If there is original growth above the graft union, it can slow down the growth of the graft even if the graft has started growing. I would recommend cutting off the growth above the graft to promote the growth of the graft.

It is the Rootstock , but the fruit change every year following a failed graft. Some Orange farmers at the farmers market told me every time i grafted my rootstock with a diffrent kind of citrus, even thuogh my graft failed , the gene from the graft kept changing the genetic make up of the tree thus is the resone why the fruit keep changing every year. One time it was a citron , but and after i tried grafting it with a orange , lemon , lime and pomello then next season the fruit were yellow like a lemon and big like a orange with thinner rindes. The farmers also told me that they loved the taste of it and that i have developed a new kind of fruit!

Thank you! I am glad that you enjoyed the video. The bottle is a cleaning product called Clorox Clean-Up. I find it convenient because I do not have to mix the bleach and it comes in a bottle that is ready to spray.
