I thank you so much for the grafting detail mistakes. I'm beginner 101. I watch several grafting technique on line and feel very confidence grafting the whip n tongue, clefting and approaching style. I did 15 grafting fruit trees into 4 trees using electrical tape and very thin plastic bags. 2 months later, I was very dissapointed all my grafting fail except two made it. I was very happy and had realizes only the clefting style works. You are right the fail ones cambium never touch and it dry out. So I re graft all the fail scions ones by doing the cleft grafting using the same scion. In 45 days later, all 13 grafting become 100% success. I was so proud of myself first time learn to graft. I learn this clefting style from Charles from IV- organic on KZbin. The only different is - I use electrical tape and thin plastic bag not his fishing line. Thank you so much for confirming the detail 5 mistakes. I never thought of doing the side grafting before, seems easy your way. I will try to graft my jackfruits tree next week.

Good luck, jackfruits have been the toughest to graft for me, side grafts fail almost always, please try cleft or even better approach graft for jackfruits.

Masha Allah the video was very informative. I recently started grafting, which I learned from this is that the cambium of scion and rootstock should be in line with each other. Thanks for the information.

You have explained in a very simple language and in a strait way. Congraturations. Very good for us begginers. I have also been a victim of similar mistakes! I was succesiful in grafting guava, lemon and avocado but mostly failed in mango and jackfruit! I will try to improve my grafting by abiding more to your advice from your experience. Many thanks.

Good luck 🍀! Jackfruit and sapodilla have been the most difficult, so don’t get discouraged if your jackfruit grafts fail. I only succeed in approach grafting those. Once i figure out a good technique with high success rates for jack and sapodilla, i will post it here.

I just unwrapped three grafts and all three failed. I also noticed that all the grafting videos have experienced grafters showing what to do. I was looking for a video on reasons why grafts failed. This is the first one I found. Thank you!

I looked online for buddy tape on Amazon. There’s one that looks like the one you had on your video. It’s buddy tape for grafting. I didn’t realize buddy tape was used for splinting one finger to another. Anyway it looks very similar to paraffin grafting tape but it’s 5x more expensive. Is it really that much different and better?
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 4 жыл бұрын
Buddy tape is quite different, it is more stretchy and stronger as well. It does not crack open after a few weeks like parafilm, which makes a lot of difference for scions that stay green for a long time and take long to flush. It is about 5 times as expensive. I buy one perforated roll per year and do a lot of grafting, and seems like it lasts for a year. The price was/is $25 per roll with $5 shipping from a forum member at Tropical fruit forum buy/sell page.

If u cut the outer bark only then it's fine to center the scion because then u have full cambium contact between the cambium layers on both the scion and the root stock.🤔

You're right, my brother! I have been learning to graft trees since I was in high school. I watched KZbin videos and did exactly what they did, but I have wondered why none of them worked. That's when I started to research more on What to do and What to avoid. Grafting in your backyard is fun and seeing them succeed is very satisfying plus you get to have a lifetime skill that you can pass to younger generations.

@growpuravida
@growpuravida 9 ай бұрын
Best is to graft as soon as possible, within hours. But if not possible then cover scion with parafilm or buddy tape and put inside airtight ziploc bag. I store them in fridge, not freezer. When ready to graft put them out of fridge, and ziploc bag and cut the base of scion 2-3 mm and then dip the scion base in a water for hydration. Then graft.

Thank you 😊 I will keep on trying. I thought bud wood occurred during April or may. You are saying it can occur In September or only if the tree is actively growing leaves...confusing part.
@growpuravida
@growpuravida Жыл бұрын
You can harvest budwood/scion when the mother tree is actively growing. The best scion is one that has at least one active bud and is hardened(not soft and new growth). Grafting can be done during any month that is warm, with weather that promotes growth of the rootstock tree. In different countries or climate the best month to graft will be different. You will have to protect the graft from rain, sun and wind, but any warm month will do if you have these protections in place.

Great video, i am in rural Africa and can’t get official budding tape. Could i try white plumbing tape, very elastic, water and air tight to?
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes you can use the tape if it is stretchable and insulates the scion from drying out. Good thing about the buddy tape is that one will not need to take the tape off for the bud to push, it usually pushes through the buddy tape. And if the weather is not very hot, and graft is in shaded area, you can also put a plastic cover on top of the scion after grafting instead of wrapping the scion with any tape.

@growpuravida
@growpuravida 4 жыл бұрын
thank you. I remove the bag once i see that the new leaves from the scion have matured. Sometimes a scion pushes new leaves but they are not from union but from the stored energy in the scion itself. These new leaves will dry off in a few days. Usually if the scion pushes after 4 weeks it is after a good union and the leaves will continue to mature.

Hi thanks for the nice video. I am interested in grafting mango. I have obtained a scion of mango plant but then I was busy and put the branch in a bucket full of water with broken part inside water. So can I use it after 3- 4 days? You have told the water must not penetrate but scion and rootstock plant.
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 10 ай бұрын
Yes you can definitely use it after 3 days if the scion branch was hydrating in the bucket of water. When you are ready to graft, just take it out and wipe it with a dry cloth or paper towel before you cut the scion.

@@growpuravida another difficulty, the wax coated stretchable grafting tape is not available at local stores, getting online will take few more days, so what is the hack for it? Can I use normal pvc insulation tape or adhesive cello tape ?
@growpuravida
@growpuravida 10 ай бұрын
The idea is to prevent rain/moisture to enter the scion union and to prevent drying of the scion until the union heals. If you are keeping the graft in a shaded place and if rain does not enter in the area where the plant is( if it is a potted plant) , then putting a transparent air-tight(no holes) polythene bag on top of scion and graft and securing it below the graft union with a thread or a rubber band will do, no need to put grafting tape. Please make sure the rootstock is watered well twice a week and given fertilizer/nutrients once after the grafting. This will help the graft union heal faster.
