The desk you see in the oval office can get switched as well but one of the most popular is called the Resolute desk. It was made from the oak on the British artic exploring ship called the HMS Resolute. The ship was abandoned when it was trapped in ice in the arctic in 1854 while they were searching for lost arctic exploration team. It was found 2 years later by American whalers and brought back to the U.S. The U.S. government paid to restore the ship and gifted it back to Britain. When the ship was finally retired, the wood from the ship was used to create 3 desks. Queen Victoria gifted 1 desk to the U.S. President (Resolute desk), 1 desk was gifted to the widow of Henry Grinnell in recognition for his large contributions to the search of the exploration party, and the final 3rd desk, which was smaller, was kept by Queen Victoria and is part of the Royal collection.

The gift rule does not apply to things given by family and close personal friends. It applies to things given by members of the public, visiting dignitaries, foreign countries etc. The majority of the White House does not change with each President. The family living quarters and oval office and some visitor spaces is what they (can) change. In some cases it will be their home for the next 8 years if re elected.

There's a story that Eleanor Roosevelt wife of President Franklin Roosevelt often told. When they arrived at the White House front door after the Inauguration, the Head Usher opened the door and greeted her "Miss Eleanor, how nice it is to have you here in the White House again." He was the same Head Usher from her uncle Theodore Roosevelt's term as President.

One thing that doesn’t really get talked about (but I believe probably happens to an extent) is that the new WH staff goes through all the rooms and looks for bugs (and I’m not talking about insects).

The Truman Balcony was added during a four year project [1948-1952] to build an entirely new steel and concrete structure within the original stone walls. Before the project began, all of the historic interiors were carefully removed and put in storage until they could be re-installed in the new structure.

The same kind of thing goes on on a cruise ship. You have 1000s of pounds of food and drink to bring aboard and put away, the whole ship cleaned from top to bottom, every room cleaned beds made luggage brought to the right rooms special requests put in rooms prior to your arrival like champagne and strawberries or a banner to celebrate your anniversary or your spouse's birthday. They do all this when you check in and before you get to your room or very shortly after. In either case, it's the job and you do it because you love it or just love being employed 🤣

NOTE : The White House that appears in famous photographs is The Residence. There are actually FOUR buildings in the White House complex : The Residence; the East Wing [offices]; the West Wing [location of the Oval Office]; and the Executive office Building. BTW, yes, there are secret bunkers and tunnels under the complex.

Anyhoo, dunno if y'all know the USA President is paid $200,000 per year and outta that money he/she must pay for the meals and misc other items. Probably sounds odd that the country doesn't pay for these items, but supposedly the Founding Fathers did not want the citizenry to every pay for the President lifestyle cause they feared it would resemble a monarchy. The president can choose his desk from a collection of desks, including the one used by Thomas Jefferson. Today, President Trump requested the return to the oval office of a bust of Winston Churchill which had been removed by another president.
@mikeforthewin30510 күн бұрын
The Lincoln Bedroom bed is not the bed he died on so that's inaccurate. He did not die at the White House. They took him across the street from Ford's Theater where he was shot to the Petersen House where he died. The bed he died on is in the Chicago History Museum. EDIT Truman they renovated the White House during his Presidency and only the exterior walls remain the same the interior was totally gutted and rebuilt. That's why he was able to get his balcony. Truman and his family lived at Blair House across the street during the renovations. Blair House is used today to house the President Elect and his family or is used as a guest house for visiting foreign dignitaries like Royals, PMs, or Presidents.

There is a constitutional prohibition that is unclear about the president receiving foreign gifts. The way around this is that it becomes government property. Technically there are questions about "foreign head of state", and president or all US government employees. The question of influence is deep in the government and private companies.

You are right Jono, this is going to be their home for 4 years, possibly 8 and why should they NOT have it the way that makes them feel at home? Repainting walls, or changing carpet every 4- 8 years is normal wear and tear for a regular person's home when you think about it! The balcony actually took 1 year to be built. During Truman's Presidency there was a LOT of internal restoration done as the structure had been deemed unsafe for occupancy due to structural issues . So Truman and his family actually moved to the Blair House across the street from the White House for the first year. You guys should look into the history of the POTUS china sets! Each sitting President can commission a custom china pattern that will be used for all formal dinner and engagements. Or, they could choose to use on of the previous administrations' pattern. The White House Historical Association, a private foundation established by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy to purchase furniture and decorative and fine arts for the Executive Residence, provide the funds for the purchase. Melania Trump, during her first term in office as First Lady, did not choose a pattern due to time and cost restraints. Hopefully she can move forward now with the pattern she was previously working on.

I used to live in Hyde Park, NY. In upstate NY (and other places) when you have something you no longer want/need but is still in decent shape, we set it out on the curb and anyone driving by can take it. Sort of an unofficial rule. Hyde Park is the home of former US President FDR. When Mrs. Roosevelt was moving out of one of the Hyde Park homes, (not the white house), she put a lot of furniture out on the curb. It was nice stuff and quickly grabbed up. Afterwards, there was something in the paper asking for a lot of it (if not all of it) to be returned as they were now parts of history (Like, JFK sat in that chair during...., FDR Used this desk to pen the......) now they are just pieces of regular furniture in regular people's homes. Maybe even they have moved on and sold these things in yard sales but almost none of it was returned.
