That house in Louisiana with the attached barn/workshop is referred to as a "Barndominium", a combination of Barn and Condominium. Popular over the last several years in the countryside.

An HOA is a group of people that decide your lives and look for you. They tell how your yard has to look, how your house has to look, what you can build. Its evil. My opinion. And if you dont follow or get to many strikes, they can forcew you to move.

Of those properties, I pick the one from Texas. Louisiana is my second pick. Winters are gonna be cold/snowy in OH. I do like farm houses, but they tend to need work. LA will be muggy and too many mosquitoes LOL Texas is my favorite of these, but IMO you're too close to Houston. (crime rate is high there) All of Houston isn't that bad, but criminals don't stick to neighborhood boundary lines. LOL (1 in 17 ppl will be a victim of a violent crime or property crime) But that's one of the great things about the US, it has plenty of space to have property. The more rural you go (stay within 20 miles of a city) the better deals that can be found. If you look at rural/country places you may find some new ideas on what to look for.

I do this also. My son is stationed in Fort Worth and wants to buy a home there and asked if I would be interested in moving there. It would be my home and when I pass it will be him. I also like waterfront and acreage. Don't let LA Fires scare you away from Trees. Most states aren't as dry and do not have Santana Winds and such. Most states with forests do control burns to keep underbrush under control and clear of debris making fires much easier to contain. Plus, the ground is not nearly as dry in NO, Ohio or TX as compared to CA. CA has a history of these fires for a reason. No, you have to worry about hurricanes when you have strong winds and then it's too wet to burn - LOL. Seriously though, unless you are on the coast, you would probably be fine anywhere with the trees.

That "Bungalow" isn't a Bungalow, that's a Ranch. Bungalows are two stories. 6:10 that's definitely a more normal price for that house. Forests only mean fires in California, we don't get forest fires in that part of the nation. No but we could hear the cat purring. Houses drop in price because no one has been interested, my house was listed for I think $80k originally, then went down to $29.9k by the time we inquired about it. They then accepted our offer of $19.5k within a week. $219k is a price that shouldn't require any work.

Weather is going to be an issue I can tell. LOL You get acclimated for the most part, but you never really get fully used to it. The gulf states are going to be very humid, hot, lots of mosquitos, alligators/crocs, storms/rainy seasons will bring flooding, the ground can be made of rocks (nothing you want to dig in), or sandy and swampy (no basements). The more north you go, you get colder winters and not all states have a lot of snow. For instance Idaho gets cool enough for snow but doesn't really have much all year. A couple of inches annually and that's spread out thru' the winter. The mountains get snow and some peaks never melt. I love all the western states for one reason or another, but Idaho is my favorite right now.

"Est. 200,000" means "Estimated Price of $200,000.00" Not "Starting bid. Could be more than 200k but also could be less. The problem with those is you have to pay everything at auction close, not financed for years. There are ways around it, basically you get a loan agreement with your own bank up to a certain amount and you can bid up that that, the bank pays the auction in full and then you are financed through the bank, etc. Sometimes the auction does allow for some degree of financing, you just have to read. You said that was the "starting bid" and it was actually the "estimated Winning bid> Could be more, could be less.

With a divorce looming and my growing disdain for California govt, I have been looking for a new place in Arizona. I have kind of settled on Kingman, AZ for a number of reasons, price of homes, Amtrak train station in town, Lake Mohave, Lake Havasu, the Colorado River, The Grand Canyon, Flagstaff and Las Vegas Nevada are all close by. A new 3bdrm, 2ba, 3 car garage, 1,500sf home goes in the range of $290,000 - $390,000 depending on the area. There are also some 4bdrm, 2ba, 3 car garage, 1700sf - 1900sf homes going for under $400,000. The neighborhood I am looking hard in is called Valle Vista which is about 15-20 minutes outside of Kingman and sits on a golf course. It has a HOA, but the HOA is only $20 a month, for some perspective, the HOA for my old condo in California was $186 a month (20 years ago) and there was no golf course. The big downside is it gets very hot 110°f (43.3°c), but hey it is dry heat, and the lakes are close by.

I agree, but he might not like the cold winters and shoveling snow. One does get acclimated to regional weather, but if the cold/snow is an issue there are a lot of places to look into. I suggest they also consider, weather, crime, native critters, jobs, schools etc. Just as a mental exercise...for fun.

You might want to test Garin for ADHD. it’s not uncommon for kids to have that. It’s not a disability or anything just his mind runs more wild never concentrating on one particular thing. He can focus if he tries just it’s hard for him. I have it too but mine is more controlled as I can focus on building models when I have time and work. Just some days the thoughts are multiplied in my head that’s all but you just learn to tune a lot of it out.

He said there was no public transportation going from Dallas to Fort Worth but there is one train that does, the Trinity Railway Express or TRE. It goes from downtown Dallas to downtown Fort Worth. Overall, I loved living there.
