On September 8th, 2022, Graham Potter was sworn in as Chelsea manager. That followed the fraught dismissal of Thomas Tuchel, a decision taken so swiftly by Todd Boehly and ClearLake Capital it left the German stunned. He had lasted just 7 games under the new owners, suggesting that the brutal Abramovich approach to hiring and firing still lurked at Stamford Bridge.
That said, Potter was handed a 5-year-contract. And Boehly spoke of his excitement at working with his new manager. “He (Potter) is a proven coach and an innovator in the Premier League who fits our vision for the Club,” said the American. “He has skills and capabilities that extend beyond the pitch which will make Chelsea more successful.”
Potter earned this glowing endorsement thanks to his work with Brighton, who he transformed into a free-flowing Premier League regular on a budget.
But the Chelsea job is a huge step up from his time in Sweden, Swansea and the Seagulls. And over 100 days on from arriving in West London, not everyone is convinced he is up to task.
So, are some Chelsea fans right to be concerned with Graham Potter after just 4 months in the job? In this Football Daily Explained, we are in West London to find out.

The way I see it, if Arteta was given so long to apply his vision and get the people he wanted, then Potter should as well. This is an undoing of 2 decades of the hiring and firing culture from the old regime, you won't get there within just 1 year. Saying that, Tuchel shouldn't have been sacked so early, like may be before World Cup or until end of season.

The difference is, arsenal only signed who arteta wanted. Boehly gave tuchel a summer with almost 300m then sacked him in September. Tuchel signed people like Koulibaly and Auba, and Boenly have made a lot of “Club” signings like Andrey Santos and Datro Fofana, who I doubt potter wanted

There's a vocal minority online out for Potters head. The average Chelsea fan knows all of the following: • A complete takeover of the club with new staff across the board and the government overseeing elements • A lot of best players were injured when he came in and more have been injured since • Hasn't had any transfers, not to mention our transfers we got in for Tuchel have been extremely hit and miss • No end of dead wood players still here from the Conte and Sari era • One of the weakest attacking lines in Europe (just look our top scorers since Tammy left)
@newrecruit100

Best players were injured when he came in? Kante was pretty much the only one he had. The injury situation only now has become untenable. It’s not been like this all along. Fact of the matter club has has deadwood for years but were still able to push through and be somewhat respectable. Yes I get it some of these aren’t good enough but they aren’t THAT bad. They’re just nowhere near good enough for a title push. He deserves criticism while same time acknowledging just like Tuchel he’s got quite a lot to deal with. Sometimes you gotta work with what you got and establish an identity. He’s got more security than any manager that I can remember but doesn’t act like he has. Short term doesn’t need to be this bleak to get success down the line especially with the squad and resources at hand.

Premier League is really brutal. Many famous clubs suffered an awful campaign and their managers might lose the job. Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool are struggling without Sadio Mane, as well as key players that got injured. Frank Lampard's Everton are far worse, despite the big expectations when their goalkeeper Jordan Pickford performed well during the World Cup.

I think ETHs and Conte's arrival + Artetas project coming together makes it all much harder for Potter. Chelsea may have needed a rebuild to win the PL but until this season it was expected for them to be getting CL football, probably 3rd and Tuchel was class. Potter may be a sensible long term option but I don't blame Chelsea fans for thinking their current form is unacceptable and potter doesn't look like he'll be able to turn it around with the current squad. For them to be so far behind the rest of the big 7 - Liverpool (and Klopp is tried and tested) what does Potter expect but questions to be being asked.

There are 2 games that made people support Touchel and resent Potter in Chelsea managerial position. 2:2 draw with Tottenham 1:1 draw with Manchester United. Despite both games being a draw Touchs Chelsea dominated Contes Tottenham which were in form meanwhile Potters Chelsea struggled insanely against Manchester United and deserved to lose that game. Touched despite his shortcomings was in the top 3 of the best managers in PL. Tactically and physically, players were always prepared, the only thing he struggled was the dressing room. Meanwhile, Potter is making major setup decisions which makes Chelsea struggle while playing from the back and very often they are forced to make subs in the very first half. Showcasing how managers are able to read Harry's tactics easily and force his hands before the half-time whistle. Chelsea made the biggest blunder of the decade in my opinion. This is a transition year for many of the clubs and Touchel probably would've turned it around and made chelsea challenge for the title.

A lot has gone wrong with Chelsea since the second half of last season. Yes that time Chelsea made two finals and almost knocked out Madrid in the Champions League but started to fall of the cliff in the Premier League title race. Most of their key players are always injured and too many dross players remains since the second Mourinho reign. The sacking of Tuchel didn't help at all since he overachieved with these players by winning the Champions League 2 years ago. Potter is just a victim in the mess Chelsea got into. Potter needs time to settle and build his vision for Chelsea like he did for Brighton. It's not possible to challenge the big boys within 1 season, it will take few seasons to get it right.

Potter is an incredibly intelligent man and he clearly knew in advance that his chances of any above average success with that squad imbalance, and Farhid Moshri/Everton style recruitment strategies, at Todd Boelhy's Chelsea, were slim to none. He moved there to set himself and his extended family up for life financially and he knows he will have huge success in his future career whatever happens. When he soon gets the sack from Stamford Bridge he'll have huge over-achievements at his next club, the club after that and the club after that too. I think he's the sort of coach who could get Bayern Munich a couple of Champions' Leagues, get Dortmund winning a Bundesliga or three or even to lead Spurs to the PL title! Probably the only two clubs in the whole of Europe with whom he could have no satisfactory success are Chelsea and Man Utd respectively. I bet he could even win the Euros for England too!

Potter should be afforded the same opportunity as Arteta. He knows what he’s doing, he inspired a much less talented Brighton team to consistently outperform. The squad is bloated with mercenaries and players with individual accolades in mind. Ship off the deadwood, bring in a few players who know the system or are committed to the vision (Caicedo & Rice imo). Stabilize, then build a culture, then learn to win. More dark days likely ahead for this current squad, but brighter times on the horizon. Trust the process, Trust in Potter COYB👊💪💙

I agree, a year ago some of our toxic boo boys wanted Mikel out. You have to give them time to get the squad organised in their image, we love to destroy a young manager's career before it gets a chance to even get started. Potter needs a couple of transfer windows where he gives the board a list of players he wants and they go and get them, only then can he be reasonably assessed.
