I have used both of these. Even as a long-term Canon manual focus users, I would pick X700 for 2 superior features which make capturing great photos faster and easier. The X700's exp lock button is so intuitive and quick to use vs the AE1P's which is slow and awkward. Second is the far more contrasty microprism collar on the x700 screen which makes manual focus a cinch and dare I say satisfying. The latter was a revelation after using A-1/T70/T90 for years. Additionally, availability of aperture priority on X700 gives you more control over look of the photos vs AE1P's shutter priority or program mode.

Well said. I didn't think about the microprism contrast but you are right that is a big plus. If it wasn't for the capacitor issue and poor low light performance it wouldn't even be a question. I think I have 3 x-700 bodies that all need new capacitors. I still prefer the X-700 though for the above reasons you mentioned.

@@graham_white Just an FYI - the X-300 and X-700 had inferior capacitors vs. the X--500 and X-570. The most common reason for failure in the electronics is because of the capacitors. The very early serial numbers (1st year) of the X-700s had good caps, but it's hard to tell exactly when they swapped.

Sorry Graham but you are so delightfully wrong :-) Trust your heart in future... I had the X700 camera back in 1988 and is it still so far one of the best cameras I've had. As for program mode, you use an MD lens with an MD lever added, which allows the reading of the smallest available aperture, often referred to as MD mount. Lenses are labelled MD Rokkor or MD. The lens you used in the video appears to be an MC mount without the lever, and that's why you couldn't use the full Program mode... Trust me, I'm a veteran of the 80's lol... Hopefully, this will swing you back to use your heart and senses and agree that the X700 is better than the AE-1... Also worth noting is that the shutter button is touch sensitive causing the LEED to come straight on, without ned for pressing halfway. You know you want to. Honestly, the battery on the AE-1... Jesus wept.. :-) I'm deaf and wear hearing aids, so in the 80's the batteries for my hearing aids fitted the X700, so I was never without :-) . Worth noting this camera is great for exposing film negative, but the metering is not so good with slide film which is more sensitive. Nice video, thank you.

@KlipsenTube

1:12 You don't take off the top parts of the X-700 to change the focusing screens. There's a latch inside the lens mount that you press forward, and the focusing screen drops down. You then insert the replacement screen and push it upward until the latch locks it in place. It had to be done by an authorized repair shop, but when I ordered two different screens (grid and diagonal split field respectively) when the camera was in for repair anyway, they just returned the camera along with those two focusing screens. Minolta's Acute Matte focusing screens were so impressive that one hardly needed split field or microprisms to focus, even in poor light. Hasselblad had theirs made by Minolta.

My first SLR camera was a Minolta XG-1. I learned to photograph with this camera, but soon I wanted Minolta's showpiece, the X-700, so that was a lot of savings at the time. How happy I was with that beautiful machine .... it is/was my first true great love. During a vacation in the US I bought a Minolta Motor Drive 1 and felt like a King!! People were stearing at me, when I took pictures. I felt like I was some kind of famous photographer :-) Well, then came the digital age and I bought a Dynax 7Xi...and sold my X-700 to my brother. Whenever I saw him walking around with that X-700, I felt certain jitters. I have now bought back my 3rd X-700. Haha, it remains my first great love.

You should try the XD11/XD7 or an X-500/X-570 or even an XD5. I love the XD series with their insane shutters. Even the XE series had better and faster shutters with a higher sync speed. The XE,XG, and XD series all had usable aperture priority modes and most (maybe all) had exposure comp as well. I think in some ways the X- series was a step backward. If I want a more automated or feature rich experience I grab my Maxxum 5 or a Sony digital.

They are both capable tools as you explained. Video is excellent. The run of photos was the cherry on top. Also sounds like the X-700 could use a service. There are two potentiometers that can be adjusted with a calibrated light source to fix any day time exposure issues. The night time exposure is best to comp on the exposure compensation dial set it at +2 and forget it for the night. ;-)

I think the issue which you noticed with the Minolta is known as subject failure. The metering pattern will affect how the subject failure manifests itself and if you used either camera regularly in those conditions you would automatically be able to adjust the exposure settings. For a number of years I photographed rock groups using a Rolleiflex SL35ME, not a particularly great camera but I had a 85mm f1.4 Carl Zeiss lens for it. The f1.4 aperture made focusing easy in the venue. I was just use to adjusting the exposure suggested by the metering system without thinking. Had I changed to another camera, there would be a period of adjustment. So you found the AE1 meter needed less or no adjustment in the conditions you used it. That is fine but there will be other conditions where you would find the Minolta better. They are both very capable cameras, the more you use any camera, the better you will get. Personally, I really like the Rolleiflex SL35E which I think has the best ergonomics of any camera, pity too many of them were unreliable, poor build quality on the pc boards, and much that I hate to admit it, the Canon A1 is a great camera too. But even a humble Praktica Nova can turn in fantastic work, more effort and perhaps you have to bow to some limitations (no light meter, but neither does the standard Hasselblad C500 series lol). The main thing is to enjoy your photography no matter what camera you have.

The reason your night photos were under-exposed (if I understood you correctly) is that you set the iso dial too high, telling your camera that the film you were using is MORE light sensitive than it is, when you actually want to set the iso dial LOWER which will tell your sensor that your film is less light sensitive, therefore letting in more light to reach proper exposure when shooting in automatic mode. On a digital camera setting the iso higher means more exposure but on a film camera the iso dial does the opposite. The iso is already selected based on what film you are using, the dial just tells your sensor how to read it. For example: Porta 800 shot at 200 iso = 2 stops over-exposed. Fuji 200 shot at 800 iso = 2 stops under-exposed. Sorry if I'm explaining something you already understand but it's a concept I struggled with a lot with my first film camera. Hopefully this helps anyone who is struggling with this issue.
@graham_white
@graham_white Жыл бұрын
No worries. It’s been a while since this but I believe I was shooting box speed and had the meter exposed for box speed as well. But yes if I had set my iso lower it would have told the camera more light which would have been ideal since the x700 isn’t as great a low light performer as the canon when it comes to metering

Think about this on the AE1 program . If you backward think the the whole thing about it being a shutter priority camera, you put the lens on A you chose the shutter speed you want but when you look in the view finder what ever shutter speed you use it will tell you the aperture that it is set to, so all you have to do is keep turning the shutter speed dial until you get the aperture you want! This means that you can set it's shutter speed when the lens is set to A but you can use it to your advantage to also select the aperture or f stop also! I hope it makes sense.

Lol. It is true and in reality you could do something similar in fully manual. And yes easy to do and simple only downside is if your trying to capture something unplanned or street stuff (which I wouldn’t really use this camera for personally) then you don’t have time to backtrack to get where you want. I love the X700. I use it as my issued camera while working as an Army photographer. I also owned one. I have taken photos with it at night, never had a problem with underexpose. I shot in all modes . But generally at night as a rule I try to shoot manually. Light meters are fickle, too much white or dark colors can throw them off. I never fully trust a camera meter. I carry an 18% gray card or I used my camera bag to meter off which was 18% gray. I carried at least two X700s on occasion three if I had on loaded with slide film. Usually one with 125 iso and the other with 400iso. Normally B&W but color slide. I wonder if your camera may have like you said just have some electronic issues with it. Also did you use similar lenses, were they fixed focal length or Zoom. We’re the Cannon lenses faster by a fraction of a stop.?
@graham_white
@graham_white Жыл бұрын
Both 50mm lenses. Theoretically the canon lenses could be faster by a half stop since the stops aren’t spot in to what’s advertised or on the lenses. If I had shot full manual I’m sure I would have had no issue. Since I was walking around with family though I decided to just relax and let the camera do the work. Which is there that light meter let me down.

If you want a similar, but much better camera than the AE-1, just get the awesome all black Canon A-1 which is also prettier in my opinion. It is a much better camera with prices online being similar to the AE-1..

completely agree. I think what makes the ae1 and program more popular is a very simple dial setup that says "program" making it very straightforward. the A-1 is by far much better (and looks much better) but I am just guessing it's a bit more intimidating for intro shooters being it was a more advanced model. I usually find it ends up being cheaper than the program which is funny.

The AE-1 Program was always available in Chrome/Black or All Black variations. The AE-1 Program lacking an Exposure Compensation control is completely immaterial, as, in effect, it HAS an Exposure Compensation Control. You simply adjust the Film Speed setting to a higher or lower figure away from its normal value that was set to match the installed film in the camera. This does the same thing. Just ensure you return the Film Speed value back again to the "correct" value, after taking a shot in this way.

Uh, you can just change the ISO on Minolta to account for any persistent bias. Takes 2 seconds, fixed. If you're shooting ISO 400, just click it 1/3 or 2/3 down from there and use as normal, and it will always "overexpose" a bit (i.e. correctly expose if it underexposes). I have mine always down 2/3, it may be me using the wrong voltage batteries or something too, or it may be inherent to the model, I dunno. You could easily adjust this day vs night too if you find it's specific like you suggest. Also, X-700 is lighter weight, 50g itself, but smaller batteries too, so probably more like 100g
@graham_white

Correct it’s very easy to fix. The point was to say that stock, the camera inherently does that. So you need to know that it naturally has that tendency so you can use the cameras settings to easily correct it. And yes depending on if a camera has been serviced etc it can be just your particular model however in doing more research I discovered this was a known difference between the two not just a fluke.

The AE-1 was a Amateur Camera, the Canon New F-1 was the real Deal. The X700 Minolta (1981-1999 or 2000) was besides the Pentax K1000 and the Nikon FM2 (1982-2001) the only one from 3 SLRs worldwide, which had such a long Time Production Run, for a Reason. The X700 is a Aperture Priority SLR, whileas the AE-1 is being Shutter Priority. The Viewfinder of the X700 is way big. I love my Minolta and Contax Gear. Your Milage may vary...but the Film Transport and Operation is being more smooth with the X700 than the AE-1. Anyway, pick your Poison, enjoy shooting! ;-) Update: FYI, your X700 Pictures do look somehow strange, i never had this kind of Flare into my X700 Photographs, and all 10 Years or so, Lightseals and Mirror Dampers are being replaced. It is a negligible difference, pretty silly to call one a real camera and one fashion. Seeing the shutter speed in LEDs (you can just feel it with your finger without looking anyway) + a viewfinder shutter that will be relevant 1% of the time? Whoopdeedoo.

When I started out on film, I bought an AE-1 (non program) because that is what everyone said to buy; it sucked. I sold it and bought a Nikon FM2n and I have been a happy photographer ever since. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think the top and bottom plates on the AE-1 aren’t actually metal construction, just metal plated; it’s cheap excuse for a camera.

great video. I was considering buying the minolta x 700 but think ima go with the canon ae 1 instead. I shoot manual so its fine either way and prefer closer to night photography. i also recently got a fd fixed 50 mm cannon lense that i bought for cheap in great condition, and came with a uv filter that ima use for my canon rebel sl3 with an adapter. I figure i can use the lense for both. my teacher also suggested the Ae 1 instead cause similar price and better for me, so thank you for the spec and reasonings. this was very informative.

Glad I could help! yeah the AE series was just so popular its probably the easiest to find and get lenses for. The X-700 is fine if you just adjust exposure compensation for night stuff by 1-2 stops on the exposure compensation dial.

I think they are both good cameras but I bought the Canon AE1 Program camera in 1982 in Germany while I was in the Army. It worked great for its time. I now have modern DSLR Canon, Pentax cameras and mirrorless Canon, Sony, and Fujifilm cameras. I just got a Minolta XG-A film camera with a bunch of lenses. I will order an adapter to use these lenses on my Sony E mount cameras. I do a lot of Astrophotography and these cameras work well.

One of them is with a programmable back which is perfect for night exposure. I think it does not make sense to use automatic mode for night exposures. Hello reciprocity failure! There is no thing as automatic compasation. But if you have done your math and have the ability to take exposures for several hours........not sure which other camera can do this. But the X-700 can and does. Has anyone mentioned the very good glass for little money?????

to your problem with underexposed shot, were u saying you rated the camera at 1600 with 400 film? if so, you were effectively underexposing the image 2 stops, meaning you would have to push it 2 stops in development for "normal" exposure. if that info wasnt relayed to your lab, then it would have been developed as normal. hope that helps.
@graham_white
@graham_white 4 жыл бұрын
Correct I rated it at 1600 and the lab pushed to 1600 +2 stops. So that wasn't the reason for bad exposure.

Ricoh also has some good cameras that are dirt cheap.. the KR-5 super is essentially a cheaper version on the k1000 and they have several auto caneras that can be found for next to nothing.. great for beginners.
