Brazilian big-wave surfer Maya Gabeira describes her symptoms and experiences with anxiety disorder, both before and after her 2017 diagnosis. She recalls years of unexplained vomiting, large yawns, extreme nightmares and eventually receiving a prescription to combat her chemical imbalance.

Had my first panic attack at age 37. Went to ER twice thinking my lungs were trying to collapse. I was getting air fine, but it felt like they wanted to collapse. It was one of the most terrifying things I've ever went through because I had no control over it. Add the embarrassment of having the doctors tell you everything is fine and it's a one two punch to the gut. And now after medication, it will come in waves every once in a while. I believe it was caused by high stress work for decades and my adrenal glands were spent. I'm able to control it, but I can't handle stress like i used to. Being a man it changes the dynamic as well. I will never ever criticize anyone that's dealing with this horror show. It will bring a grown person to their knees, and you can't do a fucken thing about it. Glad she got some help

Well said! I worked 6 days 16 hours a day until I shattered myself. I had complete Burnout and it’s taking years to recover and find meds and stop drinking or self medicating. Our society is making us sick! I’m a male too, and I completely agree. It can bring the toughest person to the their last straw. It’s sad we have to read comments to realize we are not alone.

@@DSTREETMEDIA Thanks for the comments friend. I was skeptical in my youth about hearing people with anxiety complain about being stuck in a rut. But after my experience, it opened my eyes. Nobody should judge unless they've wrestled with this Dragon. Cheers

Hearing from a woman like her that she struggles with anxiety disorders gives me strength and courage. I always thought that anxiety made me a coward but somehow i always managed to get out some difficult situation that where life-threatening , in my mind of course. The we're not even close to what Maya experience are .. go strong Maya .
