Bernie should be respected for everything he did to build up F1 but let's be honest he was completely out of touch and out of sync with the new world and he absolutely was driving the sport into the ground for the sake of short term profits.. Liberty are absolutely correct in their assessment, to make money you need to spend money and even lose it in the short term at times, Liberty in their short time in charge have made some decent strides into boosting the sport's popularity by making it more interactive, making drivers more accessible and more exclusive content as well as content in general being available. They are also doing their best to make the racing more exciting and trying to level the playing field as best as they can while also managing the ego's and advantages of the big teams. There needs to be simplified engines (preferably v12's at least v10's) so the performance difference between the cars is centred on the design and construction of the vehicles themselves and not just whatever power unit it has fitted into it, liberty are also trying to do this as well. It's not that engines should ever be standardised or uniform but they need to be simplified so there is significantly less cost as well as less scope for massive differences in power and therefore speed.

No, you are dead wrong. You are in it for the "cool" factor or "thrill". The literal reasons these racing sports will die is thinking like yours. I love mechanics - just got done puting a 6404 turbocharged engine into a 4020 - let the teams design cars however the please. Expel nitro for the danger aspect but the rest should be up to the drive's team. the ability to get ahead should be done by mechanics and smart design. That is part of the fun. the only thing that triggers me is ideas like yours.

F1 was the most respected motorsport before Ecclestone took control (and even before he took charge of a team), and history shows that all sports organizations that were doing well in the early seventies only went up like mad afterwards. Sure, Bernie was the one to do it, but someone else would have done it if he hadn’t, and there might have been some people who could have done a hell of a lot better than he. All the dirty tricks and power games he played, he fucked some people over real good.

KryzMasta 100% correct! Let us not forget that F1’s popularity trended upwards along with all sports as cable TV began to provide greater access to those sports. Thankfully F1 has embraced social media and modern technology the way they have, arguably doing the best job of it across all sports. If he was still around he would have implemented a ton of restrictions which would have hampered the growth of F1.

having watched the Brawn documentary recently, this just shows how sneaky and clever he is. He didn't care about the teams when they were getting such a small cut and causes the breakaway attempt in 2009. Also, he withheld money from Brawn to back them into a corner to stand down on the breakaway agreement. He's shady and pretends he's not. Not buying it. He's cuttthroat and certainly didn't care about teams earning more.

Both should be offered visiting professorships at the either of these institutions: The London Business School, Cranfield University, Imperial College.

I respect him for how far he brought F1, but this mafioso bullshit doesn't work on modern world. And that is the key difference between Bernie and Liberty... one is a mafioso, the other is a business. They both can make a lot of money, but would you really want to deal with a guy who allegedly contracts mercenaries, gets revenges and "send messages" to "enemies"? That kind of thing doesn't cut on such a big company as F1 is now. Also, let's be honest... Liberty is doing a hell of a lot better job this year than Bernie had done on the last ten.

Bernie got the job done and he got it done very well. Liberty hasn't really done anything with Bernies creation yet, everything is still exactly the same except for a few tiny changes like the youtube presence, the different locations for driver interviews, a few small changes to the show. A lot of this stuff was very overdue and very welcome but some of what Liberty has done has been baffling and cringeworthy, like the driver show in the US. We need to judge them on big changes over the next 5 years rather than a few youtube clips. These Graham Bensigner interviews with Lauda and Bernie are more interesting than anything Liberty has done thus far IMO. Their first real test is happening right now with the new rules. Ferrari has ejected its toys from the pram (predictably) and Liberty need to call their bluff. Bernies only real mistake was he allowed the teams have their way after they threatened their little breakaway series a few years ago. He should have called their bluff.
