Seals are terrifying. I was snorkeling in the Galapagos Islands and went out to a little sand island thirty feet wide off the coast of one of the islands, so I had to go through the water to get back. I was hanging out there talking with a girl when suddenly a Galapagos male fur seal flew up at me and started barking. It kept circling the little sand island and would not let me go back. Finally it got distracted and I quickly made it back to shore but it ended up chasing me right up to the shore. It was so aggressive and really surprised me. This seal was maybe four feet long and no more than two hundred pounds with no tusks. I felt that primal "I need to run" that prey animals feel; on the land I could easily fight but in the water, with a bunch of coral/sea urchins at the bottom so you cannot stand up, that seal had the total advantage. They move through the water like an otter can; except they are much bigger. I cannot imagine having a 8,000 pound bull elephant seal do the same to me. Its lunacy. This guy clearly has accepted that he is willing to die for his craft and I totally respect it. I, however, was not willing to to die for a study abroad trip.

Must admit, I can't think of many things more terrifying than a bull elephant seal trying to simultaneously flatten you and rip you to ribbons. That's straight up Lovecraftian horror right there, especially with the location.

Nothing! Just a couple of nights ago I needed a pee in the middle of the night. I went to sit down, as you sit to pee in the night when drunk (don't judge young people as you will also) and I saw it. A wee furry leg. I lifted up the seat and it was a spider maybe two inches across. As I lifted the seat it moved slightly. I had to go back to the kitchen and pee in a pint glass and deal with the spider in the morning. So we've all been in life and death situations.
