Planning phase for two grain bins. The first phase will be to make one into a storage area with a loft. Just starting my research. How easy/hard is the removal of the raised floor? Can the raised floor support a few ATV’s or S x S’s. Will have to frame in for a larger door and add a ramp. Thank you for documenting your build!

Floor is strong... capable of handling weight of atvs.. not a tractor.. but definitely strong. As far as taking the raised floor out.. if in good shape you might find a farmer who needs floor and or auger and advertise it for free if they come remove it. Otherwise... take it out carefully to resell... or.. just hack it out and scrap the metal. Hack it out job.. probably have it all out in 2 to 3 days max with 2 or 3 people. It should have a solid concrete floor under it.. which is a great floor to work from... take your door opening down to it and pour a sloped entry apron to it for a overhead door or large door to finish to... no ramp needed then.

Should have just made a propane steam bender. Waaaaay cheaper and less time. Couldn't imagine buying plywood in 2021. 3/4 got up to $95 here in the Midwest!

Yes it was $75 a sheet when i bought it. Had 12 total sheets for plates.

I'm dying to know what a propane steam bender is.

I wonder if you could have use a 2x12 to get that arc.
@blueroomoutdoormedia5630 Жыл бұрын
Possibly.. but at time it was 50 dollars a board.. plywood was 75 sheet and get about 8 or 9 out of 1 sheet. Plus way easier to cut plywood on arc than 2x.

Would a router work in place of a jigsaw?
@blueroomoutdoormedia56306 ай бұрын
@backroads_traveler sure would. In fact I cut out first few curved plates with jigsaw and realized took to long and so I went to a router. Used a duplicating bit and screwed down my cut out plate and used it as a jig to run router to

I am in the planning stages for a similar build to turn a standing grain silo into a honey house. I also hope to build a 1/2 loft. I was planning on leaving the raised metal "floor" and just attaching the framing and then subfloor to it. Flooding can be an issue here so keeping things up off the ground is ideal. Is there a reason you chose to removed the vented metal floor?

Honestly i dont believe that elevated floor would be substantial enough to frame on top of to support the walls, post, and floor load of 2nd level. If you kept it to single level it would probably be fine. If a raised floor is a concern... You could still frame up a floor from concrete pad below... I chose to take mine out for several reasons. To get down to solid foundation for new framing... But also to bring floor level down so i can get walkway to grain bin and floor all on same level. Making it handicap accessible. If you did leave your floor, i would suggest you add blocking under it down to concrete pad to reinforce for wall framing and post supports for loft floor. You will need to insulate under it as well.

I see your comment of 12 shts of .75” ply, below. However I am wondering how many single ply plates you get per sheet? I’m assuming 6? I don’t have cad to make the math easy lol. Currently estimating a 28’ schoolhouse / upstairs master bed. Love this whole series.

I honestly cant remember... But i recollect 8 plates out of one sheet... For a 24ft diameter bin. 28ft diameter will be less arc.. So definitely probably get 8 out of a sheet

Waste of time, if you guys had metal framing knowledge , you would use curved track.
