My friend who shoot mostly exclusively in 6x17 showed me his Mamiya official dropped in kit for his Mamiya 7 that convert the camera into ultra wide shooting 135; and yes, it was made by Mamiya officially, not those cheap 3D printed spool. So, if you ever want to return to the format, just pick up one of those for the cost of half of your TX-1. Also, much kudos for the effort for filming with anamorphic glass to match the subject matter.

After many years of wishing I had this camera/lens combination (after renting it once in the late 2000s) a few months ago I finally bought it from eBay with huge help from a random 30% off coupon (I have no idea why it only applied to this one item. This is about as close as I’ve ever been to a $5 thrift store find.) So far it’s been great. Unlike Jason, I tend to see panos all the time. I am new to rangefinder focusing, so that’s a bit of a challenge, but one I’m up for. So if you too see panos all the time, get one. Then get it insured.

What's also pretty cool is loading 35mm film into a 120 camera, I did this for my RZ67 and also in my 4x5 camera with a toyo 6x9 adapter by re-using the paper and spool of old 120 film and placing the 35mm there. But you can also find 3D-printed adapters to load a 35mm roll like a 120 film, however you need a dark room to get the film out again and roll it back, or have to become creative with using an empty roll as the receiver for the film.

I'd love to know what Jason thinks isn't lack luster because 18:14 that look is amazing! It's dare I say, "Cinematic." There's nothing I love more than whenever Jason pulls out the TX-1, those are always my favorite videos, the pictures are always amazing, and that could just be the wide screen talking mixed in with a little bit of envy because I've always wanted to shoot in this format. But either way, I reject your rejection of the xpan Mr. Grainydays. You need to keep it and you need to shoot more of it please, for the love all sproket holes.

Not a film shooter here. But, ever since I got the Fuji GFX 100 II it’s pretty much been locked-on on the 65:24 aspect ratio - imitating the x-pan aspect ratio. I freaking LOVE it for my landscape work. It’s one of the reasons I picked up this camera! But I’m also happy to be able to occasionally flip it back to 4:3 for the clients who don’t understand / appreciate the beauty of the panoramic aspect ratio.

Sad to see you leaving the xpan behind, but something I saw coming. It's a very unique camera with its format but there are some people out doing some great bangers with that pano format. Josef Koudelka might be a good example... for pano, not the xpan. The first time I used one in Copenhagen, it felt right to me and when I saw my results I felt in love with that camera and had to get one. Now it´s one of my all time favorites. Fair criticism for what might be my favourite camera. I come from a filmmaking background so the aspect ratio feels natural for me to think in but also I don't think in terms of portfolio or consistency of work. I just think about what I like to shoot and these days it seems to be vertical 6x7 or panorama. The presentation aspect is also very important, the first time I truly appreciated the format was when I threw the photos up on a 65" 4k TV. My photos are for me but if I was more concerned about sharing them, this ain't the format for today's consumption habits. Also, you could just shoot medium format and crop in.

I agree that the color film you tend to use does not lend itself to panoramics. However, I loved those shots you took in Chicago with this camera. I think the grittiness that Tri-X gave (iirc) really made the street shots work well. Although I definitely get the limitation of the lens speeds. I do pano shots whenever I can, but always stitched. To have an additional camera for it would def get old.

Yeah I agree, I had one for four years. I got some great photos with it but honestly… its annoying to use. Its so specialized that its kinda shit for everyday photos, very few really work in panorama and its too expensive to have as a novelty second cam. The aspect ratio is so tight that it doesn’t really feel that wide if you want to have an actual subject. Either they’re tiny or it feels so claustrophobic vertically. They also are super unimpressive looking in anything except KZbin videos or relatively large prints. After the honeymoon period I kinda stopped using it and stuck with my Mamiya 6 and 35mm. Ended up selling it for an M10 which gets used all the time.

You know what would be sweet? If Lomo made a version of their LCA120 to shoot 65:24 on 35mm film. The light meter and 38mm lens on the LCA120 are decent (at least by Lomo standards) and cover 6x6 so there will be enough of an image circle. It’d be reasonably compact. All they’d have to do is the film transport. Who knows how likely it is that they might actually make such a camera, but seems more probable than my owning an XPan.
