You have to use a roll for night photography, I did a series shooting neon signs at night/ dawn in old neighborhoods around Seattle. 400h was my choice film stock for this project because of the cooler rendition. I did see a lot of green casting within the mid tones and shadows of shots that were illuminated by incandescent bulbs, but that was easily correctable in the scanning process.

I think it’s important to state that the look of your film pictures is only half determined by the film you shoot. The other half if the display prep. That is, how you scan or print your negatives to be looked at as a final image. The only inherent look a color negative film can have, or maybe it’s better put by saying: the look a color negative film is being designed towards by the manufacturer, is for the developed neg to be printed onto photochemical paper in a darkroom or a lab. That is where the ASA ratings on the packaging stem from. Because the black point on a print doesn’t need to be so low, because the paper itself subtracts light. So the negative can be a bit less dense. We love the Fuji Frontier scanners because they can by themselves be somewhat close to the look of Fuji‘s DP II paper. There’re ways to calibrate them to look pretty much exactly like a print. And Negative Lab Pro also has ways to bring you pretty close to that look. Everything else is variation and does not serve as a benchmark to judge a films look. Unless Jason would provide us with the exact scanning settings he used for those pictures, it’s save to say that the Portra 400 to Pro 400H comparison is not conclusive.

I think it's a film that performs outstandingly well in very precise conditions, but that is slightly less good for general use (although I still always manage to make it look exactly how I want, it just often requires a little bit more editing work). I was visiting Marseille in the south of France this fall and Pro 400H worked amazingly well with the earthy and already quite warm tones of this very Mediterranean setting. The teal blue sky of Portra with the yellow accents on already pretty yellow buildings never really looked right for me and I ended up always trying to replicate the rather desaturated look of the Pro 400H rolls I shot at the same place. Though, for that very same reason, I would not recommend shooting Pro 400H in very colourful scenarios if you have other options. Earlier, I was shooting it in Lille in northern France and the results weren't quite as successful, notably due to the more vivid colour palet of the place (where Lomo 800 and Portra 400 were doing a great job). The other huge selling point for me was the price. While Portra is, I believe, a slightly better film, it is certainly not worth 1,5 times the price of Pro 400H. Here in Montreal, a roll of Pro 400H in 120 go for around 10CA$ while Portra is generally hovering more towards 16CA$ (though I know of a place that sells it for less than 14CA$!). Given my limited budget, I would go 7/10 times for Pro 400H. I find the lost of this film stock to be a tragedy because it robs me of my main source of cheap yet excellent 120 colour film that I can afford to shoot casually without being too bothered for wasting a frame or two (and I already shoot 645 for that same budget reason). Edit : wording and spelling

Thanks for another interesting video! I had similar experiences with Pro 400, the 35mm version. When I saw the results of my first attempt, shot at boxspeed, I asked myself if I am too stupid to shoot film or if this film might be a little overhyped. But when I tried it a second time, shot at ISO 200 it looked much more interesting and - as you’ve said - pretty similar to Portra 400 shot at ISO 200. Maybe Pro 400 renders colors a tiny bit cooler but all in all, both film stocks are quite similar. By the way, the photos you took on your little trip look really good👍.

Kyle McDougall did one of his famous exposure latitude tests on Pro400h several years ago. Based on his results, he also determined that Pro400h looks best when exposed at ISO 200. Thus, I have only ever shot this film at ISO 200. And I will say that Pro400h in 35mm doesn't look nearly as nice as when shot in 120 format, even if both are shot +1 stop overexposed.

While Ilford does produce Acros II (and some other brand’s BW films like Rollei) its chemical formulation is still Fujifilm’s. Pro 400H was really good under tungsten light. Definitely better than Portra 400 is. Fuji Superia 400 ditched the fourth color layer in 2018 to be easier to produce. But it’s still the most versatile consumer film and actually the second best stills film in tungsten light after CineStill 800T. It can still produce a more natural representation of tungsten light than any of Kodak’s films. It’s also currently the best bang for the buck film now. At 400 you’ll get somewhat green shadows and a more muted image. It looks pretty natural at 320 and has a nice punch at 250. At 200 it really starts to pop. It’s really nice to have an alternative to the warm look of the Kodak films and that can produce some good looking magenta skin tones. Since Pro 400H is gone, Superia 400 is my go to if I want something different. And just you know I have booth rolls of Natura 1600 and a significant other and I hold both of them close.
@LaskyLabs
@LaskyLabs 9 ай бұрын
RIP Superia. It was because of this comment that I learned to love Superia by shooting it at 320 and below. Now it's been replaced with Ultramax... Joining Fuji C200 as a film replaced by a Kodak offering. Admittedly, I have seen some results and it seems to be slightly cooler than Ultramax. Why Fuji just can't offer up their formulation, I dunno. Maybe chemical/mechanical differences on the production lines?
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 9 ай бұрын
@@LaskyLabs I think it’d just be too much work for Kodak at that price. Also why make a better film than their own for a competing brand? But it doesn’t seem to all dead just yet. At least in Japan production just seems paused. Also the new “Fujifilm” 400 isn’t quite the same as the current Ultramax, not like “Fujifilm” 200 is just Gold.

I've got a couple of rolls of Fuji Super HG 100 that expired 29 years ago. Wish me luck.

Hey, Jason - what frame rate are you shooting on your Sony? It seems to be cutting frames out of the microphone shots - I had a similar problem where I shot in 25fps and not realised I had edited and exported in 24fps.

Jason, will you please include more slap boxing clips in future episodes? Maybe you could recreate all of Fight Club (1999) for us. Thank you

Here’s a silly question. When you fly with film, do you have them hand-check at security? And have they ever given you a hard time with that? And thanks for another curiously addictive video!

Film with ISO's above 800 should be hand checked by TSA because the X-ray at security can harm higher sensitivity films, rendering them useless.
