Back in the day, I only ever shot in 50 - 100 iso film. Grain was for silos and hippies. What we were really after (though we didn't know it yet) was the look of digital photography. Just ever-improving resolution, detail and creativity. Aaaahhhhhh! The idea that we could take that detail and deconstruct it into the look of film someday through AI...why, that was never even a whim.

If you don't want the halation, you can buy Vision3 250D and get it processed at a lab that does ECN-2. I shot 4 and a half rolls and didn't really notice any halation at all

The remjet example ... brilliant. I think 50D is one of the sleeper films out there at the moment, despite the ISO being a bit limiting at times.
@ShonenNick
@ShonenNick 3 жыл бұрын
The ISO isn't limiting! Trust me. Photographers shoot this as if it's Portra 50, which is most certainly isn't. Cinema filmstock has insane dynamic range and is designed to be pushed/pulled/over-/under-exposed. It's also meant to be heavily edited afterwards. The cinema workflow is about getting the desired result from a malleable image by any means necessary. I've shot 50D from EI 50 all the way up to 200 before and got great results. Some even trust it at 400. Not pushed, just underexposed.
@lobsterbark
@lobsterbark 3 жыл бұрын
This film with the remjet looks quite different. Maybe it's the presoak that remjet removal requires that makes it look different. Either way, the straight Kodak movie stock is way cheaper and better IMO. It's like Ektar but more flexible because it doesn't saturate the colors so much that heavy editing is required for portraits to look good. The lower iso is also a benefit because it allows you to open up the lens more without using an ND filter in daylight. If you buy short ends and bulk load, it's around $2-3 a roll of 36.
@peterbromaghin7621
@peterbromaghin7621 Жыл бұрын
You got it. And 100ft rolls can be had from normal outlets and come to about $5/roll. Process it yourself with an ECN-2 kit and it's another $5. Competitive with B&W and way cheaper than buying single rolls and sending it out for C41 processing. And I don't get the over exposure and bland, washed-out colors so many people seem to prefer. Yuk.

Another awesome video! Love the story, your narration, the video, and of course the stills. You really leveraged the film's character in that orange silhouette. You also gave a very good description of the film's unique qualities and play-by-play of your adventure. The one point I have to make is that the colors in the stills were not anywhere near as saturated or pleasing to my eye as those of the video. The video really popped. Most of the stills were short of what I would expect from your description. There were a couple with pleasing greens and the reds at the cafe were good, but for the most part the colors could not keep up with your imaging skills. Maybe my monitor is off, or maybe I am. I found myself thinking of the Metropolis review. Anyway, thanks for the post!

I got a similar look with Cinestill 50D - a bit too flat with shift towards cyan color look for my taste. I find Ektar 100 giving a very different much more saturated and less flat look (debit here are often blue shadows which 50D fortunately doesn't do!). I likely won't buy 50D again for the price it goes for. I get more from a simple Kodak Gold.

You weren't kidding about CineStill exposure latitude. I recently did my first roll of 400D, and I took a really awesome photo of Waffle House at the crack of dawn. The shadows were pretty damn dark, but I was able to pull them to where they looked presentable. They had weird aqua tint of some sort that was kind of weird, but thankfully, desaturating as such made it look really good. Needless to say, CineStill is now me what cannabis was when I was in high school... my whole personality.

I've still never gotten results out of 50D that I like, both 35mm and 120. Last roll I shot was terribly green in the highlights and purple in the shadows. With some Lightroom edits it was fine I guess but I just can't get excited about shooting it again. It doesn't seem to have significantly less or smaller grain than Ektar so the low ISO doesn't do much for me. A friend in the movie biz mentioned that cinema stocks are generally designed for more color post-processing than stills stocks since it's part of the whole production pipeline. Not sure if that's true or I just can't crack the 50D code.
@austing2968

I know it’s expensive as all hell but try bracketing your shots. Some of these specialty film stocks get severe color shifts from both over and under exposure
@xandercesari9773
@xandercesari9773 3 жыл бұрын
@@austing2968 yeah I shot a bunch of the last roll with EI pushed to 100 as I heard it tames some of those tones a bit, but a few shots pulled it down a stop since I was panning with a camera that had a 1/4000 max shutter. The under exposed shots were certainly a bit better in those shadow/highlight tones but still not as good as a stills stock.

I‘d really like to know where you got the notion from that lower speed films are more saturated. There is no pattern that speaks to that. If anything higher ISO films are more saturated know. Portra 800 is the most saturated film in the Portra line. With 400 being less saturated and 160 being the most muted color negative film available now. And CineStill 800T is considerably more saturated that 50D and the same is true for the Vision 3 films processed in ECN-2 chemicals. 500T is the most saturated of the Vision 3 films while 50D, is the most muted. Sure Ektar is very very saturated but that’s because it’s been designed to be this way. I don’t think that saturation and film speed are inherently related. Or at least, that it comes down to what kind of film the manufacturer wants to make.
@VariTimo
@VariTimo 3 жыл бұрын
@UCXzlY6vZj5S-VRx3mOhnmuA Yea but that is rating you film at a lower ISO and basically overexposing it. He is saying that lower ISO films are by themselves more saturated, which is not true. And this goes across brands. Back when Fuji made their Superia films at different speeds, Superia 100 and 200 were less saturated than the faster ones.
