I am an old man 77. I knew Gram when he was in High School in Winter Haven. He worked at a music store in Lakeland. We met when our group would go to this shop to buy supplies. We were a bunch of R&B local twangers at college. Gram sat in with us at a few club jobs. : 1962-63. we were older, I had some tapes of him, with us , doing jobs. Gone. We knew he was very talented and creative. No drugs or booze in him back then. His voice on this tape saddens me. Our town, Winter Haven was a town that had more churches than bars. Michael Staryk

It's ok, his voice shouldn't sadden you. There's no difference between the poisoning of tens of millions of people on anti depressants and alcohol. It's no different. Life is too short.

Was Gram Parsons born again ? Did he sing in Church ?

I'm from the South and grew up not far from Gram in the 60s. And all my relatives talk like this. Lazy drawl. Hypnotic.

He is really gacked in this interview. What a great talent, but so damaged. Read Bob Kealing's wonderful biography "Calling Me Home". Great interviews, rare previously unseen photos and a comprehensive history of his formative years in Central Florida and the rich musical scene that existed in the early 60's.

thankyou.I enjoyed David N.Meyers Twent Thousand Roads very much aswell :) Such a tragic story, when you come from a family who's made their fortune from oranges and has their own "special family juice" i.e. alcoholic, you really have the odds stacked against you.Poor Gram.

His addiction genetics, plus damage from his dad's suicide, plus his emotionally distant and physically mostly isolated mother, plus all of that money to allow him to drown/obliterate his sorrows with alcohol and drugs, really did him in. He had no firm, loving hand to guide his way growing up and give him a sense of self-sufficiency.
