Grammatical Cases in Irish (EN)

Hello and welcome or welcome back! In this video I talk about the four grammatical cases in Irish, and the reasons that we use cases. It's a topic that can confuse many people, so I hope this helps!

Four cases of Irish Nominative Accusative Genitive Vocative Dative • Tuiseal Ainmneach = Nominative o A noun or pronoun with be in the nominative when it’s the subject of the sentence o Chuaigh mé abhaile aréir - o Ritheann an madra sa ghairdín gach lá - • Tuiseal Cuspóireach = Accusative o A noun or pronoun will be in the accusative when it’s the object in the sentence o Bhrúigh sé an leabhar ón mbord - The action is done to the book • Tuiseal Ginideach = Genitive 1. Two nouns together - teach an fhir 2. After verbal noun - ag déanamh na hoibre 3. With certain prepositions - timpeall na tíre 4. Amounts - go leor cainte, breis ama 5. Compound prepositions - ar feadh na bliana, ar fud na tíre • Tuiseal Gairmeach = Vocative o Used when you’re talking to someone o A chara, a sheáin • Tuiseal Tabharthach = Dative o After prepositions o Chuir mé é ar an mbord o Tá an chat faoi fhuinneog • Éire = nominative / accusative • Éireann = genitive • Éirinn = dative Exercises: What are the cases for the words in bold: 1.
