Grammy Awards 2020: Macelaru, Marsalis, Benedetti. Interview with Marsalis and Macelaru for RTVNY

Cristian Macelaru conducted the world premiere recording of the Violin Concerto by the American trumpeter and composer Wynton Marsalis. Performed by the violinist Nicola Benedetti and the Philadelphia Orchestra the recording was nominated for 2 Grammy Awards and won the Grammy for best Classical Instrumental Solo on January 26, 2020. Cristian Macelaru is the chief conductor of the WDR Symphony Orchestra and the music director designate of the French National Orchestra. He is also the Music Director and Conductor of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the world’s leading festival dedicated to contemporary symphonic repertoire. In November 2019 Cristian Macelaru was named the inaugural Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of Interlochen World Youth Symphony Orchestra (WYSO). Cristian Macelaru conducted the National Symphony Orchestra of Romania in their first tour in the United States in January 2019. The Romanian orchestra joined forces with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and performed together the world premiere of Wynton Marsalis’s newly completed work of the Jungle, commissioned in 2017 for the 175th anniversary of the NY Philharmonic. After the 1st performance at Lincoln Center in NY, Wynton Marsalis and Cristian Macelaru shared with Romanian TV of NY their thoughts on their historic collaboration and the exceptional young Romanian musicians. Wynton Marsalis, the internationally acclaimed American musician, composer, bandleader and educator has been awarded 10 Grammy Awards and his work Blood in the fields was the first jazz composition to win a Pulitzer Prize for Music.
