Due to the minstrel connotations for about 90 years no self-respecting black man would be seen dead playing a banjo. Yet it is an instrument originating in Africa. Thank you Wynton Marsalis for bringing it back with a vengeance.

I’m 81, and boy! I was digging this joyous, gorgeous pumping of a good ole song!! I was ackcherly trying to play along, on guitar, and getting some of it okay. BTW, for musicians this is being played in the key of A (Clapton favourite) and that is unusual for horns and clarinet. A bit more difficult for trumpet, but this one is a maestro! 🙏🏻

Wynton's (both brothers really)led/ lead the tightest band I have ever been privileged to have seen/heard. Me thinks the JVC Jazz festival (in NYC) was still going when this clip was shot. Shame great music like this doesn't enjoy more wide spread popularity in America-its homegrown! First recorded in 1928 by Bo Carter.

Clapton has always been in the Blues modal... searching and digging in the grass roots of the delta blues.. in the process he has paid tribute to Robert Johnson and other black founders of the blues..perhaps that’s why he ended up with this collaboration with Marsalis, a great Jazz musician always proud of the black contribution to the american Jazz as we know it today..
