They didn’t qualify because of that rule they had. If you’re nominated for a track before you released a whole album you couldn’t be nominated for BNA. Katy was nominated for I kissed a girl year before her whole album was released and lady Gaga was nominated for just dance a year prior to the fame and poker face. They changed the rule after Meghan trainor was nominated for its all about the base and won BNA a year later. Apparently they went back to the those rules with cardi B who was nominated for bodak yellow but after the release of invasion of privacy she didn’t qualify for BNA, but its back to the rules trainor won.

My BNAOTY Winners: 2008: Taylor Swift - Amy Winehouse was my second so I’m not mad ❌ 2009: Adele - well deserved ✅ 2010: Zac Brown Band - stuck between them and MGMT but well deserved ✅ 2011: Mumford & Sons - I’m not mad but whatever ❌ 2012: Bon Iver - I’m just biased hehe but very well deserved ✅ 2013: Fun. - Stuck between them and The Lumineers but well deserved ✅ 2014: Ed Sheeran - REALLY?! MACKLEMORE OVER ED SHEERAN?! I respect Macklemore but he’s nowhere near Ed. ❌ 2015: Bastille - Stuck between him or HAIM but I appreciated Bastille more in 2015 than HAIM (now that has changed in 2023) but Sam Smith?! SMH ❌ 2016: James Bay - I appreciated James Bay the most in this era but Tori Kelly is one of the most underrated vocalist of our time. I’m not surprised Meghan won. SMH ❌ 2017: Maren Morris - I didn’t really care for any of the nominees so I’m not mad. I think Maren is solid and would’ve been my pick. ❌ 2018: Alessia Cara - This is probably the most conflicting year for me. In 2023, I would’ve chosen SZA. In 2018, I would’ve chosen Alessia Cara or maybe Khalid or Julia Michaels. I’m actually happy with this one. ❌ 2019: Chloe x Halle - I admire Chloe x Halle but I didn’t care for Dua Lipa at this time. In 2023, I would’ve easily chosen Dua Lipa so I’m not mad. ❌ 2020: Lizzo - Like Dua Lipa, I didn’t care for Billie but in 2023, I would vote for Billie too. ❌ 2021: Phoebe Bridgers - Who won? 😂 2022: Olivia Rodrigo - I loved her debut album but one year later, I would’ve actually voted for FINNEAS but I’m happy with either.
