Duffy's also pretty nice, and kinda shitty to toss her under the bus like that since her career fell off because she was abducted and raped (an obviously understandable reason to get the fuck out of the music industry). Duffy absolutely could've had Adele's career path (Rockferry was the #1 album in the UK in 2008, Mercy was a great single that dominated the radio, both do that "blue-eyed soul" shtick), but she's only just now getting back into music. calling her a nobody is ignorant.

So I'm a big jazz fan and your assessment on Spalding is completely wrong. She's actually done several albums that have been extremely well received in the jazz community, and her last album one the best jazz vocal performance album at the Grammys in 2020. It also reached number one on the charts for jazz. So she actually is extremely successful and I think you're biased as well as you not knowing just as well or at least contemporary jazz really misinformed you on this because I think you should have maybe googled or Wikipedia her to actually say if she has been successful afterwards because she's never going to be a pop or R&B success.

AstrudGilberto was also one of the nominees at the Beatles beat you know the legendary Brazilian composer who did The Girl From Ipanema which is quite literally the most famous Brazilian song ever. The Beatles did turn into some of the greatest artists of the 21st century but if we are talking about 1963 it was a pop band who won out against actual composers. Again it's just someone who's extremely misinformed and I find that there's a lot of people who don't know older music except for whoever was extremely popular or the well-known name, so they just order back to assume that's the person who should win or deserve to win when there are a lot of factors that go into it. Again I just think that he should have done more research before making some of these statements I know that they're his opinions but it's just that someone stuff he's saying is so misinformed it drives me crazy. I also read that sentence where it said "Of all the winners, only one (Esperanza Spalding) has been a jazz artist." The source of that claim is from a now defunct entertainment news website who somehow made a lazy false claim. But, no actually, Spalding wasn't the first and only jazz musician to win the award. The first Best New Artist Grammy was awarded to Bobby Darin in 1960. Darin made two albums before the award, one is for his rock and roll music and the second one is for adult standard a la Frank Sinatra jazz. Darin was the first jazz artist to win Best New Artist. Then in 1962, Peter Nero, a jazz pianist won the same award. He is also a jazz musician. In 2003, Norah Jones won Best New Artist. Isn't she jazz? You even mentioned her in this video. In 2008 Amy Winehouse won the award too, though she won it for her Back to Black record which is essentially soul and rhythm and blues, but she is considered to be a jazz musician. Her 2003 album Frank is jazz. So no, Esperanza Spalding is not the only jazz musician to win Best New Artist. I hope someone is going to fix that sentence in the Wikipedia article so no one else is going to be misinformed.

Also Duffy was a white British woman who also made sixties inspired R&B and her album came out before Adele's. Because everybody knows that Adele did not have any radio play in the United States in 2009. Jazmine Sullivan and Duffy actually did have hits in 2009 in the US. I’d disagree with the assessment of Esperanza’s career. I’m a jazz musician and in my experience at least, she is still known and respected in that sphere. She’ll probably never have like big pop success, but some of her work in more recent times has still been critically well received, she still plays major jazz festivals with high billing, and you occasionally see some small mainstream media coverage of her work. I’d say she’s had a fairly typical level of career success for someone who’s “famous” specifically by the standards of the modern day jazz world.

The fact that you said you don't have anything to say about Jill Scott when she Foster Shelby Lynn makes no sense I don't like Brad Paisley but it's well known that he's actually pretty popular in country but Jill Scott is considered a genius in the R&B and neo soul genre. She's a singer songwriter and poetress.. Who's songs and albums are heavily played. Her verzuz was one of the most talked about as well. While I like dua lipa you saying she's the real stand out compared to ChloexHalle and HER, who plays her own instruments, is laughable. I'm also not seeing what's special about Billie Eilish, Black Pumas, Lil Nas X, Lizzo and Yola are better performers. He won't go is vastly underrated. I agree...but to say Adele went up against nobody's just because you don't know them is really disingenuous. Duffy it literally is expired by the exact same music that adale and Amy winehouse were inspired by. That would be 60s black soul music. Duffy's also pretty well known in the UK. Jazmine Sullivan is extremely well known among R&B and neo soul singers... She's also a singer-songwriter and has some of the best R&B albums that have been put out in the past decade. I'm not a fan of the Jonas Brothers but to say that they weren't popular and still aren't popular is a lie even one of the brothers had a huge solo career. And Lady antebellum again one of those groups with a terrible name but they actually have some good music and are quite popular in the country scene. So again I think some of your bias or you not knowing all the artists or their albums is kind of creating a bias that you yourself can't get from under.

Now I love me some Britney and she's a great dancer with a lot of bops but Christina has always been the superior artist in terms of versatility, musicianship, production, writing, messages, VOCALS etc. Her discography isn't just dance pop. Christina has actual substance that varies from supporting LGBTQ rights before it was a trend to singing about domestic abuse to powerful feminist anthems and self-acceptance. Throughout her career she's healed many people with her music. She's a literal life-saver and that is the biggest accomplishment a musician can achieve. Christina is a real artist and a real live singer, who is praised by the likes of Whitney Houston, Cher, Etta James and Pattie Labelle to be one of the best and who is cited by countless pop girls today as a major influence like Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Demi Lovato, Little Mix etc. This particular award went, deservingly, for the one with more talent and artistry, not for the one with more popularity. Adele only seems like a clear cut winner now, after we know she became a best selling artist. But at the time, Duffy was considered as the next Amy Winehouse in terms of talent and success, with bigger sales and hits than Adele. Lady A, was also quite popular in the country music world. And they became even bigger after Need You Now, which won Song and Record of the Year 2 years later. Not to mention The Jonas Brothers was the thing back then. So, no, Adele was NOT the clear choice. BUT, I agree Adele is #1 on list, because they could've chosen one of the other more popular (at the time) nominees. Instead, they somehow managed to give the awards to someone who eventually became one of the biggest selling artists of the century. That's the definition of the best decision ever.

Joss Stone in a lot of ways made the way for Duffy, Adele, and Amy. So it's interesting for Joss not to get credit because she wasn't as commercially successful as Amy and Adele. I'm finding it ironic that TJB and Lady A are being called nobodies. The Jonas Brothers are still relatively popular in their adult years and Lady A is now a lauded country act that was so respected that they changed their name. Jazmine is finally getting the mainstream recognition she deserves. It's slow but she's getting national anthem placements, just won her first Grammy on television and has had critically acclaimed projects the last couple years. Heather Headley is a Broadway icon and deserves her respect. I think the project she was nominated for was beautiful. "In My Mind" is a great song and she sings it like no other. Joss and Jill got the short end of the stick due to neo-soul coming out of relevancy in the mid 00s. Unlike Alicia and John who were able to adapt due to their input on the music, Joss couldn't maintain a hold due to her age and the American audience not connecting as well to her, and Jill thankfully pivoted. Amy and Adele were just as soulful as Joss, the resources just weren't available for Joss in the same way. I wouldn't say she's more gifted than Amy but it's not a fair comparison. To jazz being honored through Norah and Esperanza is also beautiful. CxH are snubbed a lot and deserved to be recognized. I hope we see that happening for them. HER did end up getting Song of the Year last year so I argue it made up for the snub two years ago.

Hearing people complain about stale chord progressions will never get old to me. As a jazz pianist, chords are never the problem with a song. Some of the most critically acclaimed songs use the same chord progressions as Meghan trainor. More complex doesn’t inherently mean better
@notyouraveragesouthernmama Жыл бұрын
Amen. This needed to be said badly. Meghan’s issue lies not with the progressions but with her problematic song messages, and the fact that doo-wop is a genre that requires a LOT of soul, contrary to what one may think (Just like at the Ronettes, that is how you do it y’all) and she takes this genre and makes it into a pop derivative that feels inauthentic and lost in the machine. Meghan is a decent singer, but any of her redeeming qualities are lost in the auto tune and over-production.

Hey Alfo, would you want to make a video talking about what you think makes a good skit in an album? 🤔 Or just talking about the concept in general. I love skits because they are cute little details that add to the world of the album and that weren't necessary. The artist put them there very intentionally. But I feel like some people dislike them because when they listen to an album regularly they want the songs not an artistic statement. Good video btw😅 This isn't really relevant to the grammys, but I thought I'd mention it.

I definitely haven’t heard much of Meghan trainors music since all about that bass but to discredit her and call her music the worst thing on earth is harsh af. She writes songs for other artists and has made a name in doing that herself. Of course I get her debut music was not ground breaking but she didn’t just become famous out of nowhere. I’ve only recently seen what she’s accomplished due to TikTok’s but I wouldn’t automatically bash her that way.
