The group of Honda cars and Asimo parked outside the building on Tokyo R246 track is actually the Honda headquarters in Minato City, Tokyo, Japan. I just realized that now, pretty cool easter egg 👍🏼

Regarding the dummy tracks at 2:31 - It's a complete guess but they might be used for rendering the rear view mirror, since that wouldn't require as much detail for such a small part of the screen.

That is a really good guess. I wonder if it's accurate?

@@VariantAEC I've only double-checked some gameplay videos to see that the track showing up normally and the track showing up in the rear view mirror appear different in some ways. Perhaps the developer of the free camera used to make the video could take control of the rear view mirror camera in a similar way as well. Apart from contacting the developers and/or seeing the source code, that's probably the easiest way to confirm whether my guess is accurate.

I wanted to post the exact same thing. My guess would also be that it is used for the rear view mirror. Due to hardware limits using a lower resolution. But not sure how to do the other cars at that point.

F1 never raced at Laguna Seca, however, Toyota took their F1 car there. Ricardo Zonta is the holder of the unofficial lap record as a result. Given Laguna Seca is actually a bike circuit (yes, even with the corkscrew!) and the short length, it is unlikely to ever obtain the grade 1 licence required to support an F1 race without significant changes which would spoil it and cause Bikes to move on

The Pacific Grand Prix (Japanese: パシフィックグランプリ) was a round of the >Formula One World Championship< twice in the mid-1990s and non-championship events in the 1960s. The non-championship events were held at Laguna Seca in the United States from 1960 through 1963. Soo....formula 1 never raced there, eh?
@sswishbone

@@Leotheleprachaun if it is non-championship then sadly not according to the record books. It's an interesting anomaly as there have been multiple non-championship Grand Prix which are not technically Formula 1 races. I'd be interested in how much the speeds differed between the 60's laps and the one Zonta set.

@@sswishbone Different layout of the track - old Laguna Seca track used to ignore the hairpin - skip the infield but and curve to the up hill bit. You can get a look at it in one of the old Herbie Films - also some old Can Am races - Keke Rosberg did well in a race late 70's that really shows the original layout.

How is it surprising that a tech demo for a game had better textures for their environment? Tonnes of people blasted games for looking worse than they did at E3(rip) for YEARS now. Company makes small interactive thing to show off their new product on a smaller scale than the full game. Company wants the most amount of people to buy their new product so they make the demos the highest possible quality due to not needing to work on an ENTIRE game, only a tiny portion. Demos are legit just advertising, but with extra steps and work from the company. You want to show off the best of what the technology can do in the hands of your team

I remember a video, very long ago, I'm talking early years of KZbin, where someone went off bounds in El Capitan in GT4 and ended up driving on a small dirt track, which seemed to be Cathedral Rocks Trail III, a course exclusive to the PSP. I've never found that video again, and don't remember anything beyond that, but I've always wondered what was up with that.

The fact that the AI cars are always loaded means that they cannot resort to logic-defying rubberbanding, which plagued many N64 and Sega Saturn racing games. For Mario Kart 64, once an AI opponent is unloaded, they begin to ignore terrain effects and are no longer subject to the typical laws of physics, which explains why their top speed, handling, and acceleration maxes out and why items have little effect on them (i.e. they don't launch into the air) once they are unloaded in relation to the player's position, which makes certain races impossible to win once they gain a fair distance ahead of the player. Same goes for Diddy Kong Racing, although there's a cheat code that gives them max stats even when loaded, and said cheat is always active in Adventure 2! In Gran Turismo, a physics modifier gets used in GT3 onwards for unfair AI. Examples include GT3's Amateur League, GT4's Pace Car (adjusts automatically based on player's pace), and GT7's Quick Race and Custom Race on Professional difficulty.

The thing about GT1/2 that I find interesting is that architecture is sometimes used to hide the draw distance - e.g. the bridges at trial mountain. The same trick was used throughout Wipeout 3 - I think the best looking game on the console, along with Sheep Dog N' Wolf. Funny you should find simplified versions of the tracks out of bounds - I think they're LOD models or for the rear view mirror. Weirdly, most tracks don't seem to use LOD and most don't even use the architecture trick - they just pop in; One exception is midfield raceway, where you can clearly see a very long way on the pit straight, with LOD models being used at far distances. I will say that the lake on midfield raceway never fooled me even as a child - I did always wonder why a piece of the scenery was missing.

@AuntieAliasing 21 сағат бұрын
@miguelelgueta5830 Not sure what you mean... R4 uses plenty of bitmaps for the UI/HUD, and it doesn't have a particle system for stuff like smoke either. The spheremap reflections are also only enabled for the replay cameras, while GT1 & 2 have them on all the time. All three are great looking games though! I'm guessing you're talking about R4's use of Gouraud shading. GT1&2 are flat-shaded. For the impression of lighting, they rely on the base textures + spheremaps and manually-placed "darker areas" of each map where the whole car darkens upon entering

9:35 - that "visitor centre" is a Starbucks on the Tsim Sha Tsui Avenue of the Stars promenade in HK. The brown buildings behind was the New World Center. If you wikipedia "New World Centre", you'll find the exact same shot for the East Wing Office building. Also, 4:50 - the one with the escalator is "The Gateway" - that escalator still exists but it's behind the Armani store on Google Maps. I'm not surprised Polyphony Digital hasn't recreated HK as a map, some of the stores that are on the GT4 track are still there today (even for a lightning faced paced city as HK) so imagine the nightmare for licenses.

on cote d'azur - that corner is 'Swimming Pool' in monaco so im guessing thats just meant to be 'bathers' the motegi thing is a go kart track at the side of it. a lot of games that actually have phillip island also include its go kart track. fun thing tho - best 'Melbourne' racing track ive played on is the one on EAs Real Racing 3 - if youre actually from Melbourne, Australia, you quickly realise, those buggers put a massive amount of work into that track to the point you drive up st kilda road past the arts centre, have to merge right twice where the service lanes end, swing past flinders st station and young and jacksons pub (my first pint) go down flinders to spencer, then go over the yarra into a legit version of southbank! it was absolutely awesome and id love to see that same track somewhere else. i know its not gt related but just wanted to throw it in. you play something like old school er.. the getaway i think it was for an example and 'yeah it looks like london' but unless you live somewhere specific thats been modelled you wouldnt know... that melbourne fantasy track is an absolutely legit representation of roads landmarks and buildings in the right places around southbank. only thing wrong with it was the design of the firetruck under the flinders approach rail bridge!!!

It strikes me as so artful. A real impressionist representation of an escalator, driven by processing/memory limitations. It would be nice to see something like that with high-res textures in a modern game. Now that I say that, I remember the slightly more modern (Wow - only 5 years newer, games really were changing a lot back then!) Wipeout HD had vast amounts of flying car traffic underneath The "Talon's Junction" track, and if you were to look closely, the traffic was made of videos. It looked fantastic as well!

There was a performace easter egg on GT3 (if I remember correctly) that I've never seen anyone else identify yet. But I tested it and it absolutely works. There is an F1 race that happens in Deep Forest. If the track is unlocked for the series, you can take a certain Toyota MR 2 and it will perform nearly identically to the F1 cars. You can even beat them with it! But only on that track, in that particular race. I wish I could remember the exact specifics of it all, but I haven't had a PS2 nor any sort of suitable hardware for probably a decade. However, with a little research, I'm sure someone with the game and proper hardware could replicate it. Only reason I knew is because once I got my 100% and/or collected all the vehicles I wanted, I'd race underdog races or try to do things that were unusual or unique.

Interesting. Yeah the track loading I always guessed. Minecydoes the same thing but of course it records past loaded areas to a file I assume. To me for older entries I always assumed opponents would rubber band for loading but in endurance or later events it's not the case so it is difficulty. Then again their racing lines/path finding varies or player interaction or presence AI as things go on per game. But through the non loaded visuals but they still know where it is as the paths are still there and only slip and slide I'd need be. Split screen yeah rendered for each player for sure makes sense. Yeah Spyro 2 (assume all 3 of that trilogy) did the same they had low res asset recreation above the level. Swim in the air up to them and you find them. I've just seen someone show off Spyro 2 via that glitch that's why. But yeah level of detail tricks. Again like Spyro 1 showed you had the blur then it gets better closer to it your are. Collision detection may apply but more so to the actual track I think it's level of detail. As dummy or low res track versions don't have all assets. In a non racing game it won't have objects the player interacts with in them in say a platformer or kart racer but will like racing of a Sim like this only the environment assets not some power ups or something that appear at their intended placement spots. They may have them but be invisible to the player but still there. Like Halo forge mode the placement of those spawners of players, power ups or vehicles/weapons. They may not be there the spawner points for cars and more I assume they just are assets for the level of details. Some.devs do put their names there. Did for Minecraft old assets. Yep vague characters and some with animations for them. Some sprites always remain. Some buildings or other details are always interesting when taking the camera to places. How cars respond to walls, hills and things too. Yeah out of bounds track details or roads are always interesting. Like Citta Di Aria does, always intrigue me that side entrance near the beginning of the track. Oh a moving escalator huh. Interesting. Very cool and convincing. An actual lake but illusion of textures and gaps/nor visible but the colours to make it convincing as camera can't see it, interesting makes sense as not important of a detail/too much on the hardware when not necessary. Oh Motegi North huh interesting. Grand Canyon not needing to be drawn that much yet was, pretty cool, pretty convincing. Swiss Alps too. Compared to Smokey Mountain South in GT2? Aka Swiss Alps original name. How much less there is? Yep Trial Mountain monkey and Loch Ness Monster too. XD A Yeti or snow beast nice. Real cars, real tracks, but still fun moments from the developers still. XD Yep the cars, Asomi robot and the Sony Computer Entertainment building. Probably leftover asset. But a transparent space hmm. Banner? Shadow? Something else. Whatever visual or functional reason. Fair to point out still. Fishermans and Loch Ness Monster.

I have played these tracks hundreds of times, yet never noticed these. I guess i was just too focused on the road to notice.

I don't know if this is just a bug on my gt4 disc but on the straight after corner 4, there's just a fully black building in the background. I'm on NTSC-U/C incase that changes anything

Laguna Seca has never hosted an officially sanctioned Formula One Grand Prix, but in the Annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion, historic Formula One cars are often raced. Nowadays, only FIA Grade 1 Circuits are able to host a Formula One Grand Prix, Laguna Seca is an FIA Grade 2. That being said I think Indianapolis Motor Speedway's road course is an FIA Grade 1 Circuit.

That's great, I didn't think it had been hosted there as an official race but wasn't 100% sure if it had hosted some sort of motorsport event that F1 was involved in. Thanks for clearing that up. Appreciate the info.

On gt2 on laguna seca, as you start the downhill with the u turn, there is a row of tires, getting the car to wiggle one gets it half way, and with the correct angle one can get out of bounds and even a dummy track of that same corner and on the city race course short at night, if you get out of bounds and look at the map building you can see two buildings that look like the twin towers.

@@SlippySlides I've seen others (like Heebo) on Patreon give up keeping them update. IMO it's fine, so long as you note which emulator revision the freecam was originally built for, like he does
