It's been 17 years and there still somehow isn't a game out there capable of doing what Gran Turismo 4 managed to do in 2004. Seriously, all of this was in a PS2 GAME. How long have we been playing 30fps 1080p titles on our consoles for? This is the peak of racing games, the greatest of all time. There will never be another game like Gran Turismo 4.

In true editor's curse fashion (this is by far the best case of editor's curse I've ever witnessed though), while I was editing and putting together this video, the people over at the PS2 Rewired Discord have actually managed to finally get Gran Turismo 4 Online working once and for all, the servers have been up and running for just 2 weeks and I've already had much better racing there than I've had in 3 years of playing Forza Horizon 4. @@badtuber1654 The feel of progression in the Gran Turismo series is light years better, and that is coming from someone who loves both and has for years. You can be driving one of the fastest cars in the game on Forza within one day. Also gran turismo was really neat for all the details it gave you about particular cars, Forza started to do that with FM6 with the Forza vista narratives, but they stopped doing it, and it was only on certain cars. That gave FM6 a lot of charm, same thing with the drivatars you could train in FM4 I believe. That was a really neat thing that added in a lot of charm to the game, and may be one of the many reasons people to this day still claim it as the best one. FM7 did away with two very good systems that gave it a lot of charm and lure, without adding in anything better to replace them, and buried it into the ground. So I understand why a lot of people knock on it nowadays. I understand how much time and effort it would take to have a detailed narrative explanation of every car while viewing it inside and out, especially with a list of 500 or more, but that is part of the charm, and showed the devs were actually passionate about the shit they were trying to sell you, just like you are actually passionate enough to enjoy those kind of things in the first place. So when they take it out without replacing it with anything better, and pretend like it never existed, its pretty fucking annoying, and makes you lose faith within those devs. BTW, im not sure if it was FM6 that had the narratives of information on the cars while in Forza vista, or if it was FM5, it has been awhile since I have played either. Also, im not sure if Gran turismo even still adds in a long list of detailed info on cars are not either, because I have not played one since GT 5, and I don't even remember now, for all I know, they both got lazy with that aspect and just assumed anyone and everyone could or would use google if they wanted to know more about a particular car, but im guessing Gran Turismo at least still adds something in on their history where Forza seemed to have abandoned it all together, not in the form of narratives, or even text like GT does, and that is simply pure, non passionate, laziness on their part. So with all that said about FM in its current state, and knowing how much charm and passion it had there for a good while, it begs the question, why should I love and be passionate about your game if your not, and don't even want to put any kind of charm and passion into it yourself? Now don't get me wrong, they are still fun to play, but you got to admit, if you look back on how it use to be, you can definitely tell they started getting lazy and careless with them, and started loosing a lot of the charm that made them great in the first place, now to me they are simply *good* or *good enough*, but not *great* or *fantastic* like they use to be.

@@dboy2258 I Played all gts from Ps1, ps2, and played just one hour gt5 on ps3, they allways felt like arcade games. Forza I played endless hours of Forza 2 and Forza 5 . And they never felt arcadish to me you can even feel the tires break vibrating on xbox one triggers controlers, you got the ToP gear guys making narratives for the game. the cars response to the tunings is absolutley fantastic, you got all the tracks with excelent detail , the engine sounds sound amazing... Gran turismo was the first car sim yes, I respect that . But Forza is better, Its just a no contest for me. Of course I have no idea of where GT is at the moment because I dont own a PS5. And I didnt bought Forza 7 yet because, I destroyed 2 xbox controlers A buttons playing Forza 5 the way I used to play with the clutch on A and manual gears and I currently have no xbox controlers lol . But I decided to download GT5 right now to see what you are talking about.

Yep, I agree with this. The graphics were great for PS2, but the handling holds up today. I've driven worse modern sims than this. It's also the only sim I've ever driven that has gotten the difficulty balance PERFECTLY right. There are elements of the game which are accessible, and others which are extremely difficult even for seasoned veterans. The outrageously high number of cars, the sense of humour that the game is garnished with, the music, the fact that there are exploits, but that even they require effort. I have never, ever gotten bored with it. The only minus is races only have 6 cars. I don't personally see no damage as a problem. But those are minor details compared to how good the plus points are and the fact it came out 16 years ago!

Beautiful explained. You hit the nail on the head with how GT4 and the older racing games had Soul put into it and had great UI to boot. The one thing I would like to add as why these games are great is the progression. You couldn't get your hands on a Super or Race car until you are several hours in (or if you exploid a certain event here). You had to work for your dream cars. But when you finally got your hands on your dream it is a magical moment. I know how I felt when I finally got the Toyota GT-One Race Car for my garage, it felt amazing. How are the car restrictions in GT4? I know it was pretty loose in GT2 and thus you could bring a LeMans Gt1 to a American Muscle Car race which felt pretty unfair.

You can put sport tires on a Mazda 787 and go into beginner MR event. Which I like, basically it gives you an option to have a good race if you bring a somewhat normal car, or you can bring something way overpowered to complete it as easy and quickly as possible.

McLaren SLR is a difficult car to control (I believe there is even a mission with it). VW Nardo is better compared to SLR (at least in handling).

Gran Turismo is more than just a game franchise. It's a teacher. I don't remember if GT4 did, but GT2 came with a manual explaining oversteer, understeer, pitch, yaw, roll etc to help you become a better driver. Then after that, it explains racing lines, apexes, s-curves, etc...to help you become a better racer. So much time and effort to make the player better, not only at driving within the game, but driving in the real world.

I played this game when it was new, it really set my passion for driving as a whole. I'd definitely argue that it is a fantastic game that has held up to the test of time and was a major influential game for those who played it. I still wish I could play it, I keep my copy of it like it's my most prized possession, unfortunately my PS2 went the way of the dodo so I can't play it anymore and refuse to get an emulator to play it, this game needs to be played in all its glory, not neutered by a emulator that despite being run on a machine that could run a million PS2 games at once, can't seem to run 1 decently.

Yes... GT4 will always be special to me. I still remember how blown away I was by the graphics of the time when I would watch my uncle play it. So much so that I went to EB Games (before they got bought out by Gamestop) and got it. I spent many an hour after school playing it, and later before I would go to work in the morning. 5, 6, and Sport just don't capture that special feeling that 4 had. I even bought a special adapter for my PS2 so I can play it on modern TVs. The only thing is the blurry picture. Is there a way to play GT4 in HD?

Just use component cables and 480p mode for progressive scan output (don't use the 1080i mode, is interlaced and in some lcd tvs looks like shit)

the car selection is unmatched perfect blend of modern and classic unfortunate that some newer stuff is left out, but all of the weird old stuff that is there and hasn't been seen since is more than worth it imo

I have been emulating Gran Turismo (PSP) on my phone for quite a while now and I will say that it is the best racing game for mobile. It is literally GT4 but in your pocket.

I used to have a PS Vita that had GT-PSP for it and I played it till I have the PD-F1car, took a while but it was... Not worth it honestly. But funny enough I learned how to drive the Nurburgring nordschleife fully with all golden trophies! Playing without any assist was hard but it made me care about set-up's, Engine/Drivetrain layouts and weight a lot more! It's sad that the game didn't came with GT mode, if it did then that would be my ONLY reason to keep my PS Vita!

Open ended questions for the comment section. If I was to emulate this game on my pc there are considerations I’d like to take into factor: Are there mods to improve the game? What controllers work for this game? Are there mods that support new controllers for this game? Does a normal Logitech steering wheel setup for pc work for this game when emulated? What frame rate do I have to keep in order to keep the game functioning? Are there other alternatives than emulating the game?

Depends on what you mean with "improve". There's shaders to tweak the lighting of the game slightly and Cheat Engine allows you to mess with all sorts of things from car limit in tracks to car data (engine, suspension, transmission). The emulator itself also allows you to make the game look a lot sharper than it did in its native hardware. All controllers and wheels work on PCSX2 when properly set up. 60fps is as high as you should go Buying a PS2 or a PS3 Fat.

I am a total gran turismo fan and have every game that PD did in this series. I have a lot of love for this game and I personally think it has some of the best tracks of the entire series. The amount of hours I played this game must be huge. Great video, thanks, happy memories of this. Remember the really long test track with all the different types of corners on it? That was brilliant.

This felt a lot like a "There will never ever be another racing game like Gran Turismo 4" and honestly I couldn't ask any better. Gt4 is my childhood and it's incredible how competitive is still nowadays. The fact that it's not that obvious to emulate it even today gives even more charm to it, despite I have a love/hate relationship with the fact that (unless you have a medium-high end pc) today best way to play gt4 is on a ps2 (and possibly on a crt)

Well, i think that gt4 had few ux mistakes. Like you choose manufacturer on the list and to read it's bio you need to read kinda fast ;) it were designed better in gt2 with "splash" screen of manufacturers

I went on holiday on an island I go to every summer. I have a PS2 there, where I spent most of my time when I was little. The engine sounds in GT4 never bothered me. What drives me crazy is how in so many games the cars endlessly are revving up and shifting forever, regardless of your speed or your acceleration, if you have the gas pressed they are revving up and shifting always.

When the time came, I decided to run out drive to the other side of the city to get my first wheel. I think it was a gt driving force pro PS2 wheel. I picked it up and got home. Man I loved this game , we used to play with my dad and brother. Each of us had his own car . My brother had the White Astra Touring Car , I had the Motul one and my dad I think had a Subaru ? I don't remember since we never saw the back of it , he always struggled with controllers lol . But we also used to choose other cars with my brother and race twice in Trial Mountain , this way each used both cars and we calculated the differences to determine the winner of each round . And the races were brutal , because we raced that track so often , we had our lines on point, and we both knew how to cheat against each other too.

At the time, this game's graphics was incredible. Even stacked against PC games released that year, like Half Life 2, Far Cry and Doom 3. It was one of very few titles that could be displayed natively in 1080i on the PS2. The gameplay was phenomenal, and the content was top notch. Even to this day, there are few racing games that offers the same amount of cars and tracks ON DAY ONE! (looking at you Forza). It still holds its own quite well, even to this day.

I played GT4 for 6 YEARS! And I was still getting better and finding new tricks on it or finding ways to get more A Spec points. I still think it's the best nurburgring representation and it will always be my all time favourite no matter what Forza does or anything else. I just never got bored of GT4 and love it to this day. I love gran Turismo 3, and 4. My only con with 4 is the penalty system in the rally racing. What are your thoughts on gran Turismo 2, and 3? You should do a video on them both or the history of gran Turismo.

You can disable the penalty system with cheats or if you run GT4 in the emulator use cheat engine to disable it so you can just drive the tracks without that daft penalty :).

In my opinion this game perfectly encapsulates the aesthetic that is Gran Turismo. From the car selection to the music, the tracks and menu layout, this game was almost perfect. Whenever I think of GT, this game is the one that comes to mind, even after playing all of the newer ones. I honestly enjoyed being able to grow up with this game as a kid.

Totally agree, GT4 is so much better than the games that followed it. The main thing missing in modern games is the FUN factor. You could crash with no consequences, upgrade your car and make it more powerful than the ones you're racing against, or if you want more of a challenge then use something less powerful. I miss games like this and Burnout.

I played this game so much back in the day. I had a wheel which sadly got lost in a house move but I still have my memory card, disc and PS2 with an 89% complete save. To this day I have a photo album on display in my living room full of photos from this game. I used to spend my weekends with a group of friends with 2 PS2's linked by LAN and we'd race each other 1 on 1, winner stays on, challenger chooses track and car, for hours and hours. Subaru Imprezas round Trial Mountain was a common choice. Happy memories I'll treasure forever.
