One thing I always liked about Gran Turismo (specially the older ones) is that you can pick a car you could reasonably get in real life and go ham with them. There's something really fun about going fast on slow cars. I do think that those types of races work better on original circuits tho, since a lot of real life circuits were designed around actual race cars instead of, idk, your mom's Honda Fit.

I always tell people, it's SO much more fun going fast in a slow car, than going slow in a fast car. The understeer, the lack of power, the shift points, the shift delays. There is so much more critical to a race over even 3-5 laps than in higher class cars. Both real life and gaming. I think it's a big shift towards drivable power and speed. Then, who has the most power and potential speed.

Interesting you did this. I took one of these bone stock and did a one make race too. It was actually one of the most interesting things to do. You really have to make sure and keep momentum through corners. Definitely true like they say, "More fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow."

Did the Nurburgring in a Samba Bus (Kombi in AU) with some mates and it was great fun. Set a blistering 14:55! Saw parts of the track I’ve never noticed before - like the Tourist entry on the Dottinger. There’s a lot of fun to be had in a stupidly slow car.

To me, this felt like a throwback to Gran Turismo 2 and its C class racing in arcade or the K Cup in Simulation, just racing your city car on track on Hard difficulty, without touching the wall nor other cars, without tuning, is a lot harder than it sounds. This is yet another proof that driving on the limit can be as hard to any car as it is to race cars, if not even more difficult.

i drove a kei car daily for the last 2 years with intra city route regularly (600 km round trip) and the first thing i noticed about this car is it's really sensitive to steering and throttle input you can really feel the weight shift and how each wheel interact with road surface, how you should gently trail brake if youre entering a highway curve and how you should manage the throttle input to not overwork the front tire. i'm a better driver since because you learn to control the car not only with the steering wheel but also with the momentum of the car buy a kei car folks

This formula is why MX5 Cup is so popular and entertaining. You have an exceptionally level playing field with cars that require smooth driving to keep moment high, but also allow for tight door-to-door racing and bump drafting. it's an awesome combo.

This race was all about carrying momentum by maintaining a consistent racing line. It required all of one's technical skill. One wrong move and you were fighting to recover. A penalty would decimate all your previous efforts. A great race concept to give you all the spills with none of the thrills.

When i did that race there was one driver who definitely had a faster car,he spun out twice behind me but still caught up like he had nitro,then sat behind me till the last couple of bends and then shot past me like i was standing still and took the win

Tried the last split, no prep and qualified at the back as I spun out. I somehow managed to claw back to 7th but it was really difficult. Took me a moment to realise you need to really short shift as there’s no power in the upper rpms. Great race Steve

4:06 10:36 "No plan survives first contact with the enemy" comes to mind. They could have been unconfident and brought in other competitors to pounce when time loss peaked from all the battling. The slipstream makes it pretty difficult to get away, and being the leading car seems to be a bit of a weak position for them long-term, especially if maintaining that pace felt impossible.

I really enjoy these races in slow cars. Loved the VW minibuses a while ago and the classic Citroen DS race. More lap time to enjoy! and the Kei cars are so narrow that they really open up the corners too

I actually enjoy the production car races more when playing GT7. Custom Races anywhere from 340pp upto around 550pp with full rules & comfort softs (25 Tyre Wear & around 12X Fuel usage) Like you said momentum is everything, the slightest mistake on any corner & watch me fall down the field. 😁 It's Great Fun & super rewarding !... Nice video 👌

This is the same frustration that world champions felt when they raced that old Mercedes in germany and Senna won the “friendly” exhibition. He was the only one to treat the car with love while the others were drifting like crazy and losing time (not Lauda)
