It’s time for a BMW M5 head-to-head!
We’ve got Mat in the all-new BMW M5, and he’s going up against the two previous generations - the F90 and F10! The all-new G90 has come under a bit of criticism for its weight, but will that prove decisive? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.
Starting with the new G90, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 coupled with an electric motor. These combine to produce an incredible 727hp and 1000Nm, and this power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It tips the scales at a mighty 2,435kg, and as new it costs from £111,000.
Alongside it, we have the F90 Competition. It also has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and this creates 625hp and 750Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed auto, and it weighs 1,895kg. When new, it cost around £109,000.
Then finally we have the F10. It’s also packing a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and this produces 575hp and 680Nm. It’s the only rear wheel drive car here, with the power sent to that set of tyres by a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It’s the lightest car here, at 1,870kg, and when new it cost £79,000.

@ I honestly think it's well worth the money. You get a box with several maps, warm up timer, 10,000€ in engine warranty, optional app control, optional throttle response control and health checks... A tune doesn't give you any of that. And, from personal experience, tunes always need some fixing after a while, or if you change parts. I had a faulty sensor and once I changed it, my remapped car would go into limp mode at 240km/h... had to change the tune to fix the problem. But sure, they usually get more power out of the engine and cost less. Plus, you can always remove the box and have them remap it to fit another vehicle. Also, both the other cars are on Michelin Pilot Sports, and the new m5 is on Hankooks... The only tyres that can handle these cars are pilot sports and eagle f1s.

I absolutely love Carwow Comments regarding BMW because it's always wrong in the End. Check some Carwow Videos from 6-8 Years ago regarding the previous Generation and you'll see People post the same "Wow BMW Designers lost their Mind!" "BMW is terrible! was the best!" etc. Fact is BMW will always be controversial with their new Models and People will always comment how the recent Model is absolutely terrible and how BMW has lost their Way. And then after a while, it's suddenly not controversial at all anymore but a great Car! At this Point it's a Meme and i've seen the same Comments on new BMWs since around 2007 and everytime after a Year or two later the Car is suddenly praised, so it's kinda hilarious. For all I care the G90 could make 1000+ bhp and destroy the F90 in a straight line. But no level of power can counteract the F90s 600kg weight advantage in anything other than a drag race. I haven't driven either, but logically-speaking even with the most cutting-edge handling technology at BMW's disposal, you can't defy physics. I can guarantee the F90 is not only quicker than the G90 in every possible scenario, but also more enjoyable thanks to its weight advantage. We can't blame the manufacturers, because no car maker in their right mind would actively make their outgoing car's successor worse by choice. For now, I'm just grateful that the M5 still has a big, rowdy V8, because one day it wont.

I’ve had an F10 & F90 M5 and the biggest problem with the F10 was in anything other than warm weather you simply couldn’t use the power, the traction control light would be permanently on past 100mph in the right conditions. That has been confirmed today by someone with a lot more skill than myself. Where as the F90 was wonderful and just wouldn’t lose grip in any normal weather conditions (not snow for example!)

Fellow f10 M5 owner here. Can confirm. I also have a DME stage 2 tune. It's amazing under the right conditions, but under any other conditions it's practically undrivable in any performance sense. Not to mention where I live there's snow on the ground for 4-6 months out of the year, so it sits in a garage. F90 is quite the jump in price, but I think it's gotta be worth it.

Yes people don’t understand this, 700+ f10 550 RWD… I will literally crash if I’m trying to put full power down, it just spins and spins until like 60+ mph. Without semi/slicks, it’s essentially un-drivable from a dig unless you ease into the power

I’ve driven a few F10 M5s and always wondered why they can’t put the power down at all, even a stock base one at 560 hp on Pilot Sports, which just spins and lights up TC the whole time. American cars make way more power with RWD and manage to put it down, like the C8 ZR1 with 1064 hp or new GT350 with 800 hp. Did BMW just get the rear suspension geometry wrong on the F10 or something?

@@j.r.986it’s set up for track, nordschleife, not 1/4 mile races. Take same American cars to track and see how they spin there. Same with F80-series. F90 became the car when BMW lost its history with pure M cars and the whole purpose with M Motorsport. Before legends were created when some could handle M cars and drive them fast. Now a monkey with banana can drive a F90 awd, it’s not a car you drive, it’s a car you are along for the ride, 👎🏻

Power to weight ratio matters. BMW for the first time ever released an M5 with worse power to weight ratio than the outgoing M5. Appauling. They could have easily made over 700HP gas only. GM is doing 1064 HP V8 twin Turbos non hybrid now.

Very good point. I explained that in another video about the new M5. I took a look at all M5 cars ever released and took the numbers from Wikipedia. Power and weight. F90 has the best ratio. That's all you need to know. Also interesting they say the new M5 has ~ 750hp at the wheels, BMW says it has system power of 727hp but they always tell lower numbers. But even it has 750hp at the wheels it loses still.

Nah definitely not De cat. I had f90 too. My mate has a de cat and pop way louder than that one. This f90 sounds like mine I had back box mod to open sound up. Plus the early ones 2019 and 20 do pop and bang a bit. Later ones they tweaked maps to loose that sound. But de cat definitely not it’s night and day difference in sound v loud and not that nice a sound to be honest.

It's less about the leather and more about the general quality and attention to detail which doesn't change with the full leather option. F10 interior is really just the E9x interior made bigger, which i personally find kinda boring

Considering the torque is what pushes the mass and everything is heavier now. The more important stat is actually the Torque/Tonne stat.
