Lo que une o debería unir a todas las gentes de esta península no son las banderas o un país por el simple hecho de serlo (falso patriotismo), si no la cultura, diferente en cada zona, pero con un espíritu común, como esta trascendental pieza que a mí por ejemplo siendo y viviendo al norte del todo, en Euskadi, me siento tan identificado como un andaluz con ella, me pone los pelos de punta... Thats the '37 Hauser in this video. It only had 3 years to live at this time before it was destroyed in a accident. That was probably the darkest day in the history of the guitar.

Had the privilege as a teenager (pop never appealed) of hearing Segovia perform live in a large concert hall. Having just heard a track of this piece played by the composer Granados on a piano (recorded on a piano roll), and being amazed by its quality and freshness, Segovia brings the piece alive in a strikingly similar way.

You bring back memories of my youth. I treated my best friend to a Segovia performance for her 16th birthday. It was a Pittsburgh Symphony concert on a VERY cold winter night. It must have been 1957, around the time of this recording. I don’t remember the program but do remember he played 5 encores, and my friend and I were enthralled.

Wonderful sound as always, from Segovia, he was really charismatic. However, the rhythym here is an absolute shambles. It always seemed to me he was making up as he went along. There are so many really fine players nowadays. Many inspired by Segovia, despite his liberal useage of rubato!

When I first heard Segovia play this some 40 years ago I was horrified at his broken phrasing of the opening melody. Listening again my opinion is unchanged.

I've always felt the same. Segovia never played Spanish composers as the composers wrote the phrasing. Not even the adagio movement from the "Fantasia para un gentilhombre" survived to his "interpretation" and it's more moderato than adagio and suffocating, it does not breath, like the partiture stipulates. EDIT: This comment before has, wrongly, the concierto named as "Concierto de Aranjuez", which he never played.

@@franzrogar I understood that Segovia refused to ever perform the Aranjuez, because it was dedicated to and premiered by Sainz de La Maza. Such was Segovia's ego. You may be confusing the Concierto with the Fantasia para gentilhombre dedicated to Segovia.

Segovia had a wonderful sound, this is true, but this performance is rhythmically awkward with disjointed phrasing that takes any sense of dance out of the music. I'm not convinced that this meets the intentions of the composer. Segovia could dish out musical criticism to young students in an extremely strident and unnecessarily aggressive way and it is interesting to speculate what he would have thought of this comment.
