Grand Canyon, Bright Angel, Helicopter Rescue, Mis-Adventure

We hiked the world famous Bright Angel Trail of the Grand Canyon from rim to river, its a spectacular hike. However, a fateful plunge into the Colorado River caused an accident and a rescue. Though it was not the plan two bucket list items were checked off in a day: hiking Bright Angel and a helicopter ride. This is a fun and quirky story if anything else. Enjoy!

That's a drag your hike ended that way! So were you going back up the South Kaibab or Back up Bright Angel? I'm 66 and did my first rim2rim 3 months ago. It was beautiful and challenging. Now I'm actually considering a rim2rim2rim hike, I think I want to run the downhills and flats to cut down on the time now that I have a feel for the place. Glad to hear you got out ok and they didn't charge you for the lift. That is a little surprising :).

We were going up and down via bright angel. I was also surprised on the helicopter. Ranger explained it’s more efficient for them this way also compared to bringing a litter down with multiple people for an 18 mile round trip. Heli was 45 minutes total rescue. 7 min actual flight time. Pilots at GC are experts.

You canon ball in. I think you are lucky you didn't land on your tail bone? I did the rim-2-rim last year and definitely something you want to get done. Curious to know, were you given a bill for the ride up? I hope you are well, thanks for sharing the video.

Hello, I'm all healed now and wondering when I will be able to make it back and try the rim to rim...without a swim this time. Yes, I think I am lucky compared to tail bone, head, or spine! There was no charge for helicopter ride. I'm not sure if that is a Grand Canyon rule or an Arizona rule. I think maybe Grand Canyon b/c a helicopter rescue is far easier than hauling people out with a litter. The pilot said they do several trips a day. They were pretty bad ass pilots and paramedic crew.

Interesting share, thanks. I’ve heard during peak season they helicopter extract on average 5 people a day. So it can happen to anyone 👍

After watching and reading the comments, it's too bad that you weren't charged for the rescue so you could learn a lesson. You caused an issue by screwing around. But, we are a no consequences society now. You also got to miss the pain of hiking back up.

$0. I'm not sure if that's an AZ thing or a Grand Canyon NP thing. I was trying to organize a mule rescue so I could save money but the park ranger informed me that wouln't be the most efficient, safest, or even the cheapest. Heli rescue is easier for all parties involved. The pilots and crew are aces and do several plucks per day from the bottom of the canyon!
