Picturesque public lands that used to host a few thousand visitors each year might now see that many in a single day in part because of geotagged social media posts.

Idk, I just did Angel’s Landing in Zion last week and it seemed like the people there truly were enjoying the view and not on their phones. So I guess it depends. Yellowstone last year however, at Old Faithful, not a single person that wasn’t on their phone taking pictures and videoing.

I think it's funny. I don't take pictures of anything, unless I have a question of species or notice something odd or criminal. I enjoy every moment as it comes. I didn't even take one picture at the very first concert of Taylor Swifts reputation tour. I wouldnt even have pictures of my daughters graduation if it hadn't been for a friend. I love nature and I hate to see these places become filled with those instagrammers. I’ve seen people arrive and take the pic and then leave immediately. There are even some youtubers who traveled to Monument Valley and said it sucked because they couldn’t get a nice pic. Seriously! You make a channel about adventure but you only go there for the insta pics and for the KZbin views? I know people want to make a living but they set a bad example to the young.

It is sad that people go to visit and the park employees have to worry about cleaning up after them....that just saddens me that grown adults cannot be trusted or are mature enough to pick up after themselves, to respect the parks beauty and not leave trash and to not climb or walk in areas that are closed off or protected for a reason. Just blows my mind that adults in our country are getting so selfish, or is it more selfish and clueless to others. We need to start changing this, it’s never too late, and no matter what we must try to change.

The surrounding areas aren’t much better either and don’t even get me started on all the damage and filth running down all the condos. These inconsiderate people don’t care about other people or their properties or the world around them. The nicest beach down there is Navarre Beach because it’s Gulf Islands National Seashore. Seas turtles and birds nest their so parts of it are protected so people can’t trash it.

I love taking beautiful shots of nature (I don't have social media; it's just for my own enjoyment and hobby) so I understand wanting to capture the amazing sights of these national parks, especially since for most people, you may only go once in your life. But I wonder, if they banned picture taking, maybe it would make the experience even more special? I feel like there aren't many things we do now just for the sake of fully experiencing them. Now everything we do is measured by its potential for material value: can I get an instagram-worthy selfie or snapshot out of this? Can I walk away with some form of physical memento? I think so much of life is inextricably tied to the material now. Maybe it would be a good idea to preserve these national parks as places where we can disengage from our usual modes of living and just be in awe of nature without trying to capture its beauty or gain anything from it. I would still want to go and I'm sure many others would too.

It's not about travel or capturing adventures. It's about leaving it trashed for the next visitors. It's about negatively impacting the surrounding area because they think their selfie is more important than keeping to a path or staying behind a railing. There's no catch-22. There's no respect for others wanting to enjoy it too.

I just came back from a 7 week trip around Andalucía and Morocco. I love enjoying places in the moment and at the same time I see how people don’t stop a look but just snap a photo and move on. There are places where I’d sit for 10-15min enjoying the scene and no one would stop for more than a minute.

I just got back from the Rocky Mountain National Park, and on my last day of hiking we made it to a beautiful waterfall that I had been wanting to see. I was trying to get a photo of it and this couple decided it was necessary to climb into the mountain stream and up to the waterfall to pose in front of to get instagram and snapchat photos. I was furious. I didn't get the photo I wanted and I wasn't able to wait for them to leave either, because when they did it, some other people saw and did the same exact thing. It's a shame.

Double-edged sword. On the one hand, overwhelming an area. On the other, showing more people why it is important to care for such incredible places. The best answer would be to give real teeth to the parks department; things like banning cars and replacing with regular shuttles, quota systems, maintenance, education, etc. No approach will be perfect, but anyone who has been in Yosemite valley during peak season knows something has to be done.

At first I got inspired to make cool tube vids of sweet places wherever I go in the world as a hobby , but after experiencing havasupai and horseshoe bend as well as recent places I have seen, I’ve realized these places are teeming with people, lots and lots of people, and this is not shown in these “perfect IG photos”. I also notice people would record and photograph like zombies and live their life in the virtual world for social media, and now I kind of reconsider this “hobby” because I don’t want to contribute to that. even though I spend a small amount of time recording whatever and photographing whatever , I take my first moments upon reaching these sights for myself and always take one good last look at nature’s gems before I leave to paint a mental image and live in the moment. the internet has changed a lot over the years, a lot of good and a lot of bad.

Yes, some national parks are becoming overcrowded. However, there’s numerous things you can do to make your visit to a park more enjoyable. Obviously you can go during a less crowded time of year. However, for families with school-aged children that may not be an option. If you go during the busy season, then start your day as early as possible, or explore later in the afternoon and evening when crowds start to die down. Get out of your car and take some hikes. Over 95% of visitors to Yellowstone never venture more than 1/4 of mile away from a road, yet there is so much to see in Yellowstone away from the road. The backcountry in many national parks is well worth seeing. Another good idea is to not ignore state parks and local parks, as well as national forests. Many national parks have nearby state parks and national forests that can be just as spectacular and amazing as the nearby national park. So if the crowds at a national park are too overwhelming, then strongly consider exploring other parks in the nearby region. Unfortunately, you will likely just have to deal with the crowds in certain circumstances. For instance, the high country in parks like Glacier and Rocky Mountain NP have very limited seasons. For most of the year there’s too much snow to travel to those places. In those situations you may have no choice but to put up with the crowds.

It's ironic that sometimes I even feel like I go places just to post on Instagram or Snapchat but at same time, it's not like I really 'care' what other people post.
