When GFR got in the groove they just didn't let it go. I'll never understand why they didn't get the respect they deserved from the critics. Mark Farner is a great vocalist/guitarist, but he put a rock solid rhythm section behind himself.

Mark Farners voice and playing style is what set GFR apart. Musically all around they were solid. They all could sing, and definately knew how to play. But they could write great tunes too. Songs people are still singing. They were like 'the perfect band'. I see them maybe like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers of the 70's...

When I consider the production from so many sourses of amazing music in the late 60's to late 70's I have to wonder what was going on in the Eternals to send so much.Of course, what we have been experiencing since has been the "Melody Apocalypse".Hip-Hop being "The Tribulation",a day of it feeling like a thousand years.Noone shouted "Prophesy fulfilled ! " when the Beasty Boys appeared !

The first hit single (and one of their best) by an extremely successful, extremely average band. (Fans of GFR, don't hyperventilate, my standards were extremely high, even then, and I felt the exact same way about two other extremely successful bands of the day, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Three Dog Night.) This was 1969, and the "Blues revival," which had been underground since about 1966, was finally starting to get some above-ground attention; these guys were hip enough to jump on it, and have a hit with it. For my money, they never released another record this good until about five years later, when Todd Rundgren produced them and they released "We're An American Band."
