Man, this dude could sing. Not just barking out rock lyrics, but a true quality voice. Mark, Don, and Mel were excellent! Even on those early, simplistic albums, it sounded like there were 11 guys in the band belting out those heavy blasting rock tunes. Truly phenomenal!

The Beatles came out on The Ed Sullivan Show (not that many people were coming out in those days lol), then The Rolling Stones .. but when this band released their first album, they became my first, and most favorite band EVER!.. and still are to this day. First there were three, and then became four (Craig Frost on keyboards). Don Brewer, and Mel Schacher Shanghai'd Mark, and tried to keep Mark from singing, performing any of Grand Funk Railroad's songs .. but Mark eventually won out. Mark Farner wrote 90% of their songs. Mark Farner shared his journey with us, brought us happiness, and Mark Farner was Grand Funk Railroad.

Hey! My first favorite band! In 4th grade I bought E Pluribus Funk with Christmas money because I liked the album cover.Once I listened to it I thought" Forget all about Elvis and Beach Boys."I was hooked. They are still one of my faves.I still listen to them often. What a great band. There will never be anything like them ever again.

MARK FARNER IS A GENIUS, he wrote most of what he recorded,he and grand funk have been screwed royally by the hall of shame, the fact that he wrote this song ,sing it,and played rhythm, lead guitar is amazing feat,he must be acknowledged for his lifes work, along with the only band to ever sell out all stadiums, auditoriums, standing aisle only, seating, there is no justice

40 years later I listen to this tune, and realize I was right. This is the very definition of talent. There simply is not a sufficient calling to compare this to today's noise. I remain genuinely disturbed at how such a talent could've been taken advantage of by such shallow management to the detriment of Mr.Farner. God speed Mark's message to the rest of this meaningless war for profit sphere called earth..

I think it is better that they are not in there. From every thing I have heard it is a lot of bull shit and if that is indeed the case then it is better not to push for them to go. After all real Rock and Roll in the dazes of Grand Funk Railroad was a battle against the establishment. I do not begrudge the good bands that are in the hall, but I do not push for anyone to be put there either. just my opinion.

Truly, this was one of thier finest songs that showed that they could really WRITE songs as well as they played them. I especially like 'E-pluribus funk' and 'Phoenix' for this purpose. I especially like the lead guitar work that runs over the "Can't get away from lonliness' refrain...powerful music and thoughtful words. Where has this kind of music gone????

My twin brother and our younger brother learned to play at a young age (14 & 10) and learned the whole live album. We never failed to get the crowds going when we would play GFR tunes. I am now 65 and just ache to play all these songs with my brothers once again, but unfortunately due to an accident I had when I was 14, I have lost the ability to play as I have aged. Thanks to the boys for giving me some of the best times of my life. GFR forever!!

I first sincerely pray to come to really hope to share with all you brothers and sisters about truly asking our Most Merciful Loving, Forgiving and Healing Father in prayer for every and all reason that our Loving God our Father, I'm sure would want all of the ones who believe in that Way, Truth and Life that He had His Beloved Son Jesus, The Good Shepherd and our truly real only Teacher, to fully understand on the way to love all what His Father and the Creator of everything perfectly beautiful too, well ones who would now choose to go deeper inside your hearts, and insincere prayer, to realize that our Loving Creator created only one other perfectly beautiful families on earth on land, in the air and all the sea creatures, and they have their natural purpose to live free, safe, unharmed and under the Merciful Wing of God. And so you see we all were deceived from every past teaching of even what every Christian and every other religious education institutions had been preaching about how to be truly blessed or obeying our Most Loving Creator Gods Commandments, and it's because they chose to ask and take the mined coins and the stamped paper currencies which keeps them serving that disobedient sinful corrupt world system. Now that many brothers and sisters have been enlightened and truly reveled of our Loving Fathers Miraculous Healing, to now acting on no more using that stolen money to be buying nor eating those beautiful families butchered products, including their eggs, milk or honey, but to pray daily to staying faithful and devoted to eating that what our Prince of Peace and Good Shepherd Jesus Christ eats, the healthy fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts. Our Holy Father will then begin to quickly open up your hearts and eyes to truly enlighten your mind to show how you would want to learn the Real Truth to receive the Real Healing from our Holy Fathers' Merciful Forgiveness, and to ask in prayer when you find time to look upon the computer about the True data & stats of how many newborn deformities and diseases that never get brought to every brother and sisters full attention, and there's so much of what one who is now sincerely seeking and truly wanting to find out about whatever questions of the past histories of mankind's stubborn judgemental teachings that couldn't have received the Real Blessed True Way and True Wisdom of what Blessings our Merciful Holy Father has for all those who humbly and faithfully stay obeying our Divine Creator Gods Commandments. So we must believe we can receive the Greatest of our Holy Fathers Gift of the Holy Spirit to go forth and freely get out to share all that what Christ Jesus had taught us to do, and that He would be with us always. For this, we give our Praise to our Holy Father Amen.stay praying and when you feel His miraculous healing you will surely see more and more on how He will deliver you from every evil temptation and you will get stronger in the Truth and be Blessed to become that Peacemaker to want to go and share "freely" to all your friends and neighbors His Way, Truth, and Life, The Good News. And Praise our Most Divine Holy Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ⚡️ Amen.

A great tune by the great Grand Funk Railroad! I had the "Mark, Don & Mel 1969-71" LP on cassette tape so long ago. I would play this particular song over & over until my cassette/stereo boombox literally ate the tape part of the cassette! I had to buy another cassette tape of this LP as a result.

my first concert, March of 1970, 9 days before my 13th birthday, general admission tickets, standing room only on the floor. 4 - 7th graders turn loose on the floor, while the one mom bought herself a nose bleed seat and told us where to meet when the house lights came on. We 4 learned a lot that night got stoned with all the pass-arounds, but we also knew we were seeing greatness at the same time. Cliff's mom took us to IHOP afterwards, she laughed at our being "lit". [she was a cool mom] She told the other 3 of us that we were sleeping at her house and she would bring us home Saturday morning. The rest of 1970, she took us to see Deep Purple, Ten Years After, and Jefferson Airplane and the Dead on the same bill. Was a year to remember for sure. I became addicted to seeing live shows. By the time I graduated in 1975, I had 70 concerts, from 76 to 86 another 101. Then my 10 year old son became my concert going buddy. His first was Poison opening for DLR, to which we left 2 songs into David Lee Roth's show, he was making the rock high poison left us with... Between 1986 and present he and I have seen 191 concerts, 47 of those were duplicates of ones I'd seen in the 70's and early 80's. GFR, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, The Who, Eagles, Pink Floyd, The Grateful Dead, Aerosmith, Jimmy Buffet, Willie, Thin Lizzy, Steppin' Wolf [w/ John Kay], The Edgar Winter Group, BB King, Clapton C,S,N&Y, Caned Heat, Doobie Brothers, Bad Company, Mountain, KISS, ETC.

So damn good!! Loved the original band line up. And Mark is still out there packing them in at his shows. The other guys are okay, but nothing beats what they once were.

GFR was going to be on TV in the early 70’s. I was about 12. My big brother was going out for the night and said I should tape it with my new Panasonic cassette recorder. So I dangled the mic down by the TV speaker and got the whole thing. The sound was really poor obviously and my brother hardly listened to it but I listened to it like a hundred times. It was one of the reasons I wanted to learn the guitar and still play all these years later and also proud to be from Michigan like Mark Don and Mel

Thanks for this great video. GFRxR was a very unique band with a unique history. As Lmcdan said, Farner wrote 95% of their songs. Mark Farner was(is) a force as a front-man. His songs will live forever!

Between this and Nights In White Satin, its hard to decide which one is the better song. Both melodically balanced, meloncholy, truthful to our generation. There will never be other groups like these. I like some of the new rock, but unfortunately they are like bottle rockets, up fast, burst and die quickly. Where have all the writers gone?

This music, Mark Farner was and is my life. To this day, I can not survive in this conditional world. I do not fault mark for this. In that stead, I thank him. Thanks for supplying meaningful music to play by mark, I may have taught a few people what playing is all about, not sure. Fellow gman, Spotsylvania Va. Ride that horsy man. Ride.
