I can't help but keep coming back to see 02:39. Something in the way she raises her arm and leg mesmerises me.

I really like them together. Yes, her balances in the adagio really did need to be held longer, but overall this is a lovely performance. Tasteless? It's a silly, showy (and difficult) piece. Cynthia Gregory told me in an interview (quite a while ago) that there were some seasons at ABT where she had to perform this so much and was so sick of it being mostly tricks that she started doing her variation in the manner of other great ballerinas of the time and had people guess who she was portraying. Chudin is a great and very precise jumper in both grand and petit allegro. I can see what Scuttlebutt101 means about elbows, but for me with Smirnova, what I'm seeing is arms that beautifully frame her face and extremely clear focus (meaning which corner/wall or audience member is she playing to). I find her a very finished, polished, and complete dancer who pays attention to every single detail and nuance (same reason I like Laura Morera over at RB). And they have a nice consonance of movement, eg in the entrechats in the coda. This is a difference you might not notice unless you've seen Chudin with someone like Obraztsova, who is known more for her lyricism. But Chudin and Smirnova are to some extent dancers' dancers so I can see why they wouldn't be to everyone's taste.

I think their Diamonds is pretty much classicism at its best as dancers dancers. Her epaulment pays homage to Suzanne Farrell while the etching of her positions and the grandness of their form (moving through the space with clarity and weight) really illuminate the Russian Imperialism Balanchine had in mind when he choreographed it. I usually prefer NYCB dancers in his ballets in general but they do an exceptional job particularly in this recording. kzbin.info/www/bejne/paK8m6iqh9WpbNE. I see it as a masterclass on classism and formalism.

I have never been a fan of Guillem's quasi robotic style, but to see this pas free from the mannerisms so favored by the Russians, you ought to see her and Legris ultimate rendition. Well....it was passed right to them from the very source ..Mme Chauvire. Russians tend to exagerate so much ...from their port de bras to the piece orchestration that it quite becomes a parody of it. For a cleaner, less mannered take-( besides Guillem/Legris)- browse Katia Carranza from Miami City Ballet.

Its that Ballet or Gymnastic? they are Good Dancers but Ballet have some rules and that its to much :(

gusano what are you talking about. There's a big difference between gymnastics and ballet. And they follow ballet rules.

If you are watching the same video you chose freely to bring your “ Empty” contribution; then I guess the context of expertise involving Ballet / art/ and gymnastic - is really lacking!

Her mannerisms are tasteless and he looks pretty average. Why are some people so obsessed with them?

Maybe they see in them something you overlook?

Then educate me about what's great about them. What I see in Smirnova is pretentiousness, vulgarity, no understanding of the style of what she's dancing, lack of balance (which is absolutely crucial in this PDD), no beautiful lines - angular arms and legs with very prominent elbows and knees, just lack of beauty in general. In Chudin - plain appearance ("plain" is the perfect word to describe everything about both of them actually), stiff upper body, inexpressive dancing and lack of any kind of stage presense and what the hell was that at 10:11 Credit where it's due though - his dancing was pretty light and I didn't see any major faults in his technique, but if that's what it takes to become a premier then these are sad times for ballet.

I have nothing to educate you about. You asked why people liked them, I proposed why. My intention was only to remind you that there 𝑖𝑠 such an aspect in art appreciation as personal taste. You see many faults in them. I see none of the ones you've listed. In fact, Semyon and Olga mesmerize me. On the other hand, I can't bear watching, say, Gillian Murphy in Swan Lake, while other people swear by that performance. What use is there to ask why people like somebody that I personally do not?

Not good period. He is worse than she is. She is not only off balance but her fouettés are not even as difficult as other Pas de Classique choreographies.

I see people usually lacking to see or appreciate in others what they actually lack and are unable to find in themselves. I am sure your balance on pointe in dancing this variation is as “ horrible” mediocre as hers is. LOL
