I love these two so much, but I have to say that Sylvie Guillem and Manuel Legris nailed it for me, and in my opinion, they danced rings around Smirnova and Chudin. Never have I seen this highly mannered piece look so natural, to the point that they added small elements of finesse and held gestures a bit longer, so that the whole thing looked spontaneous, even as it was absolutely correct. And the supreme control Guillem had over her Italian fouettés has never been equaled, in my opinion; even Smirnova looked a bit wooden and rushed. And after watching so many couples dance this incredible set piece, I also have to say that dancers I’ve watched from the Paris Ballet overall understand the panache needed for this type of dance better than any other national company….they look _so natural_ while performing the dated, almost unnatural-looking choreography that it’s just spectacular!

As it turns out, you maligned Ms. Smirnova for no reason and made yourself look hopelessly ignorant, as well as being behind the times! Ms. Smirnova left the Bolshoi and Russia in March 2022, saying that her grandfather was Ukrainian and she was “against this war with all my soul.” She now dances with the Dutch National Ballet.
